Greetings, Insiders! We’ve thrown a couple surveys at you this year and we went through every submission you sent to us. There is a ton of valuable information you provided on how we can improve. We heard that the rate of updates to your feedback suggestions is a frustration, some of our Insider pages need updating, and the engagement from the team can be improved. I personally appreciate everyone’s candid thoughts on how we are doing; there is no way we can improve without helpful feedback from our community. As we work to make improvements across our communities, I wanted to share what we heard from you and what else we want to improve. February 2022 Insider Survey…

We are pleased to announce that we will start deploying RDP Shortpath for public networks on September 6th. We anticipate the regional deployments will be complete by the end of September, first delivering the feature to validation host pools before going live in production host pools. RDP Shortpath improves the transport reliability of Azure Virtual Desktop connections by establishing a direct UDP data flow between the Remote Desktop client and session hosts. This feature will be enabled by default for all customers. What is RDP Shortpath for public networks? RDP Shortpath lets user sessions directly establish a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) flow between client a…

Backup restore speed improvement for SQL Managed Instance
by Guest NikoNeugebauer- 0 replies

The importance of fast database restore operations in any environment cannot be overstated – it is essentially time business cannot carry on; everything is offline. There is a known DBA saying that “one should not have a backup strategy, but a recovery strategy”, which means that just taking backups isn’t enough, and that the restore process should also be regularly tested, so that you measure and know how much time it takes to restore a production database if and when the need arises. Azure SQL Managed Instance allows customers not only to recover their databases from when FULL or DIFFERENTIAL backups were taken, but it also allows customers to recover thei…

In this post, we get a behind-the-scenes look at the engineering work required to change a critical platform component with code paths that are exercised billions of times a day while minimizing service disruptions and maintaining SLA for our customers. We provide a brief introduction to help cover the basics, go over motivations for doing this work, explain some of the more interesting challenges, issues, and bugs encountered along the way, and close with the results and the new customers scenarios enabled. The challenge was huge, but we’re excited about the benefits this brings to Azure App Services and our customers: Almost 80% improvement in throughput in p…

Enable time limit for students in your test
by Guest Zhongzhong Li- 0 replies

We are excited to share how time limit works in Microsoft Forms, an important feature to help students to practice their time management skill. How does it work? When students open a quiz with time limit, they will land into a start page before they formally start the test. On the start page, they could know the total time they could take for this test, and they are told they couldn’t pause the timer during the test. After students start the test, they will see a progress bar on the top to help they know how much time remained. Students could also collapse the timer to a smaller widget to help them focus on the test. Students w…

On-premises connectivity from Azure Monitor: a serverless approach
by Guest saswatms- 0 replies

Summary One of the obvious benefits of open, cloud-based technologies is the ability to integrate a wide range of global services with on-premises resources. If you’ve developed for financial services for any length of time, you know this openness adds another level of complexity to development. When money movement is involved, you’re going to encounter a higher level of risk and compliance considerations. This blog highlights just such an issue encountered by the DevStudio engineering team here at Fiserv, and how we solved it. I hope this blog helps you understand not only how our team works but gives you useful context for implementing your own solutions that pr…

With Azure Hybrid and multicloud solutions Microsoft’s partners get a consistent and flexible way to innovate across on-premises, multicloud and the edge. In the past, I wrote how Managed Service Provider (MSP) partners can combine Azure Arc and Lighthouse to manage IT Infrastructure anywhere at scale: Azure Arc & Lighthouse: Managing IT Infrastructure Anywhere at-scale - Microsoft Tech Community and today I want to focus on Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and how they can use Azure Hybrid to build compelling and powerful cloud solutions. Hunt in Microsoft 365 Defender without KQL!
by Guest Tali Ash- 0 replies

Threat Hunting is critical to any effective Security Operations Center (SOC). Proactively hunting for threats strengthens the detection and protection coverage and can limit the impact an attack can have on any given environment. Actively detecting adversaries, mitigating the findings quickly, and implementing protection and prevention capabilities to prevent future instances all strengthen an organization’s defenses. To reduce the learning curve for hunting and enable all analysts to hunt easily, we are excited to announce that a Guided hunting experience in Microsoft 365 Defender is now in public preview! This removes previous dependencies on KQL. The guid…

In our present threat landscape, attackers are constantly trying to compromise organizations, each with their own set of motives. They may want to compromise accounts credentials to later sell, utilize compromised users to spread phishing campaigns, or even utilize the computing resources of the organization to deploy and run their own tooling. In this blog, we will describe how attackers can compromise Azure subscriptions and use them for malicious activities. In addition, we will share how Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps data can help hunt for these activities and how to mitigate the risk of compromised subscriptions. Attack Scenarios We will focus on …

Automated key rotation for TDE BYOK now available in preview for Azure SQL!
by Guest Shoham Dasgupta- 0 replies

Transparent data encryption (TDE) in Azure SQL Database and Managed Instance helps protect against the threat of malicious offline activity by encrypting data at rest. TDE with Customer-Managed Key (CMK) enables Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) scenario for data protection at rest, by allowing a key stored in a customer-owned and customer-managed Azure Key Vault to be used as the TDE Protector on the server or managed instance. When using TDE with Customer-Managed Key, one of the important responsibilities that customers need to perform on a regular basis is key rotation, that is, rotating the TDE Protector on the server by switching to a new key (or new version of the e…

Monitoring my hybrid environment – part 2?

Hello folks, 2 weeks ago, as part of my series on setting up my demo environment to reflect a typical hybrid (on-prem <-> Azure) environment I covered the basics of what I needed to support operational requirements like monitoring/insights, patch management, change management, etc... So, I designed a Log Analytics Workspace (LAW) and deployed the Azure Monitor Agent and Dependency Agent. But some of you eagle eyed readers messaged me and pointed out that unlike when I Azure Arc enabled my servers, I did not configure Azure Monitor to only use the site-to-site VPN. You were correct. However, it’s something we can remedy. And we’ll do it right now. …

Overview: The managed identities can be used both in the Azure Batch Account and Azure Batch Pool, which may cause confusion in some situations. This blog is aimed to help you understand the differences between the usage of the managed identity in the Azure Batch Account and in the Azure Batch Pool. The managed identity configured on the Batch account only grants permission for the Azure Batch Account to authenticate to other services but not for Azure Batch nodes (or Pool VMs). If the purpose is to grant the Azure Batch nodes access to other Azure resources, then you are looking for the managed identity configured in the Azure Batch Pool. Outline: Overall…

New granular permissions for SQL Server 2022 and Azure SQL to improve adherence with PoLP
by Guest AndreasWolter- 0 replies
In the last 3 years, the SQL Security team has put more emphasis on enabling customers to use SQL Server while adhering to the Principle of least Privilege (PolP). As part of that effort, all new features in the next SQL Server release: SQL Server 2022, can be controlled with more granular permissions. SQL Ledger is a good example of such a new feature. It comes with separate permissions for creating (ENABLE LEDGER) vs dropping ledger tables (ALTER LEDGER); a separate permission to view ledger content (VIEW LEDGER CONTENT) for auditing purposes; and another independent permission to generate a ledger digest (GENERATE LEDGER DIGEST). Besides new features, a lot of effor…
