This article will discuss the common scenario when the on-prem servers failed to connect to AKS(Azure Kubernetes Services) with the error: Encrypted Alert. Normally, this error message means the TLS handshake has failed to establish, and today I want to share the common reason for that: the NGINX-based AKS package limits certain cipher suites in the connectivity. Symptom Connection from the 2012R2 on-prem Windows server to the AKS would fail, with the error message: Troubleshooting Capture the network trace, and you will find Encrypted Alert during the TLS handshake: 2. Note that the handshake would fail immediately after the clien…

An enterprise cloud, like Azure, handles an incredible variety of workloads and to be successful running Oracle in Azure means you need to know what you’re doing and where the sweet spot is for a relational workload. I don’t want to get too deep here, as Azure Oracle SMEs are both data and infra, which is a hybrid area resulting in us splitting between the two focuses. The Oracle Must-Knows An Oracle database is a complex relational database, but there are terminology and physical architecture that is important to know before we proceed into this post: Database instance, (background processes) Memory, (SGA/PGA) Control files Datafiles Redo log files Ar…

Introduction: Azure Firewall is Microsoft’s cloud-native, fully stateful firewall as a service that provides the best of breed threat protection for cloud workloads running in Azure. With any firewall solution, the most important factor is the ability to control outbound and inbound network access in any easy, automated method. One common use case we see is customers needing to easily allow traffic communication through Azure Firewall to Office 365 endpoints that their users rely on for their day-to-day productivity. To make the process easier to allow traffic to Office 365, we have created a deployment template (detailed in the Deployment section below) to automate th…

The Creator Platform and Experiences group (CPE) powers the Xbox storefronts on console, PC, mobile and Xcloud. CPE facilitates substantial traffic and revenue into Xbox, and they’re excited to bet on Mariner to run their service. “CPE is in the final stages of migrating from Service Fabric to AKS, and as part of that transition, we’ve chosen to move to Mariner as our host OS. In less than a month, we scaled to half our fleet on Mariner. Once the transition is complete, Mariner will be the only Linux distro powering CPE. For us, Mariner was an easy choice to migrate to. Compared to other common Linux distributions, the Mariner image is smaller and has a cl…

Passwordless Azure for CI/CD, Infrastructure and User Experiences

Or "Getting rid of credentials in Azure Part 5" for those who have seen my previous posts. For a little while I have been doing this series on getting rid of credentials in Azure (although in retrospect I see that it would probably be more correct to say "getting rid of classic credentials"). Along the way we've covered federated credentials, managed identity, EasyAuth and more. It has been neatly packaged into CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions as well for further streamlining. I'm happy with the results so far even though some of it took quite the effort to pull off. The EasyAuth login process was pretty much as far as we got regarding the user facing sid…

Function App under at least a Premium plan could have unlimited execution time. However, it might caused a duplicated invocation issue with a ServiceBus trigger because the "PeekLock" duration is up to 5 minutes (including renew). It is a tutorial to reproduce such the scenario.
