I have a PC (XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 2) that works fine when connected to my Company network or when disconnected and used as a stand alone machine. When I disconnect the PC from the Company network and I connect it to an IP using remote access (no matter about the provider) and I double click a local (C:) file through Explorer, the system pauses for 60 – 70 s and then opens the file (.doc, .xls, .pdf, .txt, ...) e.g. 1kB dimension. I can open the files immediately by starting the relevant program, then opening the file. The anomaly is not related to the browser used to navigate or to the mail client. In fact the problem is present just after the rem…

I have a small though important (to me and some customers) w2k3 R2 Sp2 domain. My problem is that running dsa.msc (or dssite.msc or apparently anything that requires secure access to the dc) from member servers can take forever. Running dsa.msc just now on a member server took 14 minutes for it to open. There is no apparent related activity during the 14 minutes. If I close ADUC after the initial connection finally happens and run dsa.msc it opens quickly. If I try to open dssite.msc after the dsa.msc has finally connected dssite.msc will open quickly. Its the first connection that seems to take forever. DcDiag and Netdiag on the DC don't show any problems. Eve…

I have a user who went out and got herself a new keyboard and plugged it in. After she plugged it in, she says her mouse pauses for a couple of seconds before responding if she doesn't use it for a few seconds. I ran the install program for the keyboard, shut down, restarted, tried her old keyboard--the problem persists through all of those changes. Ideas? It's almost like the mouse goes to sleep and takes a bit to wake up. It is a USB mouse and keyboard. Thank.

Not sure this is right forum, but here goes: Runnins IIS (personal web server) and trying to update Access 2003 database via perl script using the following: $DSN = "Test"; use Win32::ODBC; $db = new win32::ODBC($DSN); $db->sql("select * from SiteVisits where script_name = "counter" "); Error: [-1032] [] "[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '(unknown)'. Hi folks, I realise that this question is fairly trivial so I also ask you only to treat it as such! ;-) If I tell windows that I want my desktop icons arranged alphabetically, I get (about) one half of them arranged alphabetically, then stops (apparently randomly) the rest of the sort list follows on at the end but arranged alphabetically. Why does this happen? Did Microsoft have a reason for doing this? Thank you :o) Jim

I have a disk SATA disk that has two NTFS partitions on it. The disk was connected to a 3Ware 9550SX controller and set up as a "Single" drive. This seems to have done something to the drive such that now when I put it into a Windows 2000 machine it is said to be a basic drive that is "Unallocated" (no partitions). I have run FinalData Enterprise 2.0 on it and I can access both partitions and get most of the data off. The problem is that some of the file names are listed with question marks in them and I think it has to do with this being a disk that was used in a Chinese computer (WinXP) and possibly the characters are not recognized by Win2000 or possibly it…

Any application like Trend Micro Internet security, Panda, Norton can post a dialog box for news or notification that you need to do a scan, etc and when this happens it pulls me back to the desktop while in 3D mode. This primarily applies to gaming. Is there anyway to configure windows not to do task switching while in 3d mode?

I joined this site because every time I sign on to my computer, I get a message saying "The procedure entry point GetProcessFlags cannot be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll". What do I do about it? Is it causing any harm? The computer seems to run OK, but I have not been able to install Adobe Reader after downloading it - the Wizard says it can't find a necessary component. I'll appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks! Barb L

  15. I'm putting Windows 2003 Server on my Dell SC1420. It previously had Win2000 Pro on it. I've put a new (identical) hard drive in it. The old hard drive is not plugged in. I've run the CD from Dell that aids in the OS installation. The Windows 2003 splash screen comes up at boot, then I get a gray screen with a functional, but jumpy mouse pointer. Nothing else happens. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any advise?

  16. I had deleted a program that I realized I needed, so I did a system restore to an earlier time that same day. The computer started the restore process and then when shutting down to restart I heard an error beep, but the computer still shut down. When it restarted I was left with a blue screen with only the windows XP flag icon in the middle. No error message- nothing. Cant click on anything, tried the F8 with the 'safe mode' as well as 'best known good' (or something similar to that phrase) both doing nothing to bring my computer back. Any idea as to what happened? I contacted dell whom after 2 attempts to figure out the problem stated that if he took me to the next step…

About a year ago I had bought a Gigabyte nVidia 6800 to go along with my gaming rig. Three or so months later my computer suffered a massive power surge knocking out mostly every piece of hardware in my PC. At this point I had bought a new computer but the video card is extremely out of date (6100). I'm wondering if there's any way of testing to see whether my old video card was affected by the power surge. I'm thinking I can test it in my new computer but I'm not sure if a dead video card would screw up my current PC. That’s of course pending whether or not it's even working. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

  21. Hi everyone, I apologise if this question has already been asked on the forum, but the Microsoft help and support page has so far been useless. My CD/DVD drive is having trouble reading audio or data CD's - it doesn't recognize that there is a disk in the drive. I've tried numerous CDs, all of which worked until a couple of days ago, and it doesn't recognize them. It only plays the utilities CD-ROM that came with my computer and DVD's. I've already been through all the related troubleshooter instructions and the Microsoft website and as far as I know I have the most up-to-date driver. Please, if anyone has any ideas or advice, they will be much appreciated! Thanks…

WOW keeps giving me an error saying I don't have Directx 9.0c but i do. So i tried updating it and no updates are found for it. But WOW still doesn't play. Why did it play before the reformat and not now? What do i have to do in order to make it work? PS please let me know in a step by step manner to fix. I am a noob with comps...
