I've been tasked with setting up a network of WinXP clients. They're dual core desktops from Dell with 2GB RAM. They will be reading files over the network (CIFS), processing them and writing them back to the network drive. The files are large (400MB) and the reads will be sequential. Network is GbE. Assuming no server bottlenecks, how fast can I expect the WinXP clients to run? I realize best case is 400/125 ~ 4 seconds per file. But I have to wonder if the client can read that fast. Has anyone here run performance benchmarks of large file reads? Thanks, Sandman

Hello, I was having the above mentioned error message for the longest time, tried all fixes suggested by members of this newsgroup and, in the end, found out that the problem had to do with my ethernet D-Link 260 modem (is no longer supported by the company so I can't get any help from them). I isolated the problem after connecting a spare USB modem to my DSL line - the D-Link 180U. So, definitely the ethernet modem is timing out during Windows Update due to the way it is configured. The problem is that I need the D-Link 260 modem because I have VoIP and it is ethernet based. Could someone help me fix/configure the D-Link 260 modem so I can get my …

Hi, I have read the post concerning wireless problems and am not sure my situation has been covered. I recently downloaded an external mobile wireless internet connection. Once installed it clashed with my home wireless connection. Although I have uninstalled the moble wireless, I am unable to connect to my home wireless without a card. This is also true with my other laptop which is also windows xp. Please advise. -- blksheba

If an application (Timeslips) opens a file in shared mode, in a workgroup it sometimes fails because (according to filemon) it is denied a file record lock, but this never seems to happen in a domain. This isn't a problem that I need to solve because I'm moving this network to a domain anyway, but for the sake of curiousity, is there a difference in file locking between domain and workgroup servers? I recall that Quickbooks only supports shared mode in a domain (unless there is some kind of server-side component installed). Does opportunistic locking apply to workgroup servers? -- Reply in group, but if emailing add another zero, and remove the last …

We have a new printer and three PC's use it. When adding the printer directly there is no problems at all, I shared it onto the network with no problems but now it vanishes every morning. I have added it correctly, done all the usual tests to check it is working and no problems until the PC is restarted and logged back in, I have to re-add it every single morning. I have no idea why it is doing this, there are no errors involved and yet it vanishes even if it is a default printer. Any ideas? HELP!

Hello all! In my test environment I try to implement certificate enrollment by the most transparent way for users. As far as I understand the most transparent enrollment way is the “autoenrollment†that is possible when using Windows 2003 Enterprise edition, v2 templates and group policy. Unfortunately my CA works in Windows 2003 Standard edition, so as far as I understand, “autoenrollment†is not for me. The other ways for user to enroll certificates are via some scripting tool (where can I get it?), by means of Web-interface or individual MMC-console. The last two methods of enrollment are not very convenient for users so we don’t take them into consider…
