I get this message "The Computer must be restarted before updating can continue". I restart, I get it again and again and again. I haven't the slightest idea as to what it was I installed that caused it to do this. I am using Vista Ultimate. I'm annoyed by it now. I have been answering no to it for quite some time. I wasn't in the mood yet to go searching all over the net for the answer.. =\ Thank you Todd

This was the solution for my problems to update and instal critical updates especially if your updates refer to office 2003 The problem!! For Windows XP SP2 System but might also apply to Vista My friend tells me that his computer is running really slow and everytime he shuts down it first tries to install windows updates. I ran a few anti malware programs and AVG including the root-kit but the computer came out clean About a month ago I had set his computer to download and install the Microsoft Window updates automatically. The reason it tries to install the updates each time he shuts down is that they have failed to install on the previous attempt.…

My computer has 2.6Ghz Celeron Processor, 512 RAM connecting with a wireless connection. My internet browser is Firefox 2.0.0.4 I have very choppy video playback when I go on youtube.com or netflix or other video in websites and the quality of the image is poor compared to when I first got the computer. I have updated all video software, scanned my computer for viruses and used spybot. How can adjust how much buffer size is being used when playback, does having java and activex working together make the computer run any slower?

When I try to run Microsoft Update on my Windows Server 2003 system, I get a "Checking for Lastest Version of Windows Updating Software......" page. IE gives me a warning that the site might require the "Windows Update" Active X control. I click on the warning to permit installation of the active X control. That just brings me right back to the same "Checking for Latest Version....." page, asking me to OK the active X control again. HELP!!!! -- Mike Schumann

I too mysteriously lost the toolbar and menu line in Windows Explorer, for the second time. Don't know why, and it is tremendously irritating! Fixed in no time using Mr. Vogel's answer, and many, many thanks!

In trying to fix up my completely screwed Windows Mail install, I've tried Exporting, then Reimporting messages. I can't seem to import a nice, clean copy of the messages and directory structure it only wants to import a complete Export. Which has dozens of Recovered folders and IMHO is severely messed up. I have successfully been able to simply drag the EML files to a WM folder. If I create all new folders, then manually drag the 25,000 emails from the appropriate folder, will WM reconstruct things properly? Will this get rid of the Recovered folders (if I also delete them), or will it put this all into NEW recovered folders. Basically, can anyone j…

When scrolling through lists, the highlight bar is a very faint blue. Tried changing it at Appearance Settings > Advanced > Selected Items. This seems to work in Explorer, but not in Control Panel > Add/Remove programs. Is there some other setting I should change? I have a Dell Latitude c840 laptop that I have been trying to get several different PCMCIA cards to be recognized and installed properly. It is a p4 1.6 ghz with 2 gbyte ram running XP Pro sp2. One is an Orinoco Silver wifi card, and the other an RS232 serial port card. In each case, the system identifies them as an MDT-0002. It did the same thing with a D-Link DFE-650 ethernet card. Also, when I inserted a 3Com 3CXM556 modem, the system called it an MDT-0000 and said it was a generic PCMCIA memory card. No matter what kind of PCMCIA device I put in, the computer won't recognize it for what it really is. System Information indicates this has TI PCI-4551 Car…

Hi, I configured an accociate's Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with the intent on connecting a Cingular SmartPhone 2125 (Windows Mobile 5) via the phone's native "Modem Link" software (aka "tethering via USB cable"). Basically, you create a "Dial-Up" connectoid in XP with a special phone number, start the Modem Link software on the phone, and then make the "Dial-Up" connectoid "dial" the phone. You then have access from the laptop to the internet via the phone's EDGE service. Before the Dell, they successfully used Modem Link on an old AMD K6 300 NEC laptop. The new Dell is running XP Pro SP2 (ie. a bare XP SP2 installation with only critical updates installed: n…

Hi guys, I need your help desperately. When I connect devices such as Iriver Clix, flash memory, my phone, they show up in My computer but not in the sync list /header in windows media player. They also do not show in sync center. What is also unusual, is that window media player flashes a quick "iriver clix detected" when I connect it, but then it dosnt show up in the sync header. I have reinstalled windows vista and still have this problem.

  24. I was reading the latest issue of Mac|Life tonight [i liked it better as Mac Addict, btw], and it struck me how dependent Apple is on Microsoft. For all the cool things that come with Mac hardware and OS X, a large swath of the Mac user population would be crippled or wiped out if Microsoft decided to stop supporting Office for Mac. The Mac faithful (of which I am part) won't like to hear this, but it's true. OpenOffice is an excellent program (It actually is now - three years ago it was rubbish), but many of us simply couldn't use it "in production." Sure, I could run Office for Windows in Parallels' coherence mode (and almost certainly would), but that's an unne…
