Microsoft Media Center Edition owners ( or renters, as maybe is more leagally correct to say here in free America ) are now at the mercy of yet another lunacy, people whom enjoy recording cable for personal use are required to purchase hard disk recording in place of inexpensive DVD recording media to be within the compliance of copyright law. Is government complex? What happens when my media center license expires, i'm s**T out of luck. Depends if copyright over rules the right of free speech, and to learn and study! Need Advanced Enterprise Scheduling on Windows?
by Guest carl- 0 replies

Greetings All, I'm working on a specification for an Enterprise-class Open Source batch scheduler, and I really would like some expert commentary from experienced Ops/Systems people. Please have a look at: http://openjcs.sourceforge.net and the specification to date at: http://openjcs.sourceforge.net/doc/OpenJCS-arch.pdf Frankly, I'm of two minds about it. Half of me thinks it's massive overkill, and the other half thinks I must be missing something really important. Let me know what you think. I really do want your honest opinion, good, bad or indifferent. Also, it has been suggested that the specification might be useful if ported to Windows (ori…

All hardware same except new PSU and Seagate 160 HD. Just wanted a smaller case, bigger drive and new PSU that would fit under my wifes desk so I could quit taking my little toe off when I walked by plus she needed more room. All she uses it for is her online classes, photos, and the net so it's no powerhouse. I built it and a clone about 5 years ago and I retired the other one and this one did run 24/7 without issue until now. I do have a dupicate board but all the green lights are lit. Soyo board P III 1 ghz 512 mhz Mushkin 160 GB Seagate Antec 400 2.0 PSU ATI 9600XT and I tried a Geforce 5500GT and an even older ATI card with no luck I have to …

If you're having trouble with USB broadband modem installation this may help. Talktalk sent me the HUAWEI SmartAX MT882 broadband modem - with both USB and LAN/ Ethernet connections. Previously I used a Sagem 800 USB modem through USB 1 at 2meg speeds with no problems running on WIN ME. I chose USB (as I had previously never loaded the LAN driver, having no need for Ethernet before when I built the PC). Download speeds showed 2.5-4 meg range. But literally everything IE6, FIREFOX was haywire or totally unresponsive. And Windows crashed at any time. I unisntalled the modem driver - loaded the LAN driver from the mobo CD, then went through loading the …

Services For Unix 3.5
by Guest shellum72@yahoo.com- 0 replies

I'm running Windows 2003 with SP1 and have Services for Unix installed. After creating the share and user mappings I am able to access the share from my workstation. I am also able to write and delete from it which is want I want. The problem I'm having is that anytime I add a 7th file to the share directory - windows explorer no longer list anything. It just shows up as a blank directory with nothing in it. However, if I log in to the linux box where the actually nfs share is I can see all the files in there. Only in windows I cannot. From the linux box if I delete a file then I am able to see everything again in windows explorer. So basically I if the share co…

I have a PC (XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 2) that works fine when connected to my Company network or when disconnected and used as a stand alone machine. When I disconnect the PC from the Company network and I connect it to an IP using remote access (no matter about the provider) and I double click a local (C:) file through Explorer, the system pauses for 60 – 70 s and then opens the file (.doc, .xls, .pdf, .txt, ...) e.g. 1kB dimension. I can open the files immediately by starting the relevant program, then opening the file. The anomaly is not related to the browser used to navigate or to the mail client. In fact the problem is present just after the rem…

Dsa.msc takes forever to connect to a DC
by Guest pdx- 0 replies

I have a small though important (to me and some customers) w2k3 R2 Sp2 domain. My problem is that running dsa.msc (or dssite.msc or apparently anything that requires secure access to the dc) from member servers can take forever. Running dsa.msc just now on a member server took 14 minutes for it to open. There is no apparent related activity during the 14 minutes. If I close ADUC after the initial connection finally happens and run dsa.msc it opens quickly. If I try to open dssite.msc after the dsa.msc has finally connected dssite.msc will open quickly. Its the first connection that seems to take forever. DcDiag and Netdiag on the DC don't show any problems. Eve…

Mouse pauses before responding
by Guest pfindling@yahoo.com- 0 replies

I have a user who went out and got herself a new keyboard and plugged it in. After she plugged it in, she says her mouse pauses for a couple of seconds before responding if she doesn't use it for a few seconds. I ran the install program for the keyboard, shut down, restarted, tried her old keyboard--the problem persists through all of those changes. Ideas? It's almost like the mouse goes to sleep and takes a bit to wake up. It is a USB mouse and keyboard. Thank.

desktop icons
by Guest Jim Robin- 0 replies

Hi folks, I realise that this question is fairly trivial so I also ask you only to treat it as such! ;-) If I tell windows that I want my desktop icons arranged alphabetically, I get (about) one half of them arranged alphabetically, then stops (apparently randomly) the rest of the sort list follows on at the end but arranged alphabetically. Why does this happen? Did Microsoft have a reason for doing this? Thank you :o) Jim

Getting back partition tables
by Guest Steve Cousins- 0 replies

I have a disk SATA disk that has two NTFS partitions on it. The disk was connected to a 3Ware 9550SX controller and set up as a "Single" drive. This seems to have done something to the drive such that now when I put it into a Windows 2000 machine it is said to be a basic drive that is "Unallocated" (no partitions). I have run FinalData Enterprise 2.0 on it and I can access both partitions and get most of the data off. The problem is that some of the file names are listed with question marks in them and I think it has to do with this being a disk that was used in a Chinese computer (WinXP) and possibly the characters are not recognized by Win2000 or possibly it…
