The My Network Places tree does not refresh for very long intervals (hours or days sometimes). After I have shut down my laptop (which has been on wireless port to my wired network), the Laptop shared directories remain displayed in Windows Explorer for long periods (My Network Places/Entire Network/Microsof Windows Network/Workgroup/Laptop). Similarly for those Laptop directories that are listed as direct sub directory entries off of My Network Places. View/Refresh does not fix this. Also, when I again turn on the laptop, it's shared directories do not appear for some time if they were eventually removed during a long (hours or days) disconnect period. …

My file server is setup reasonably simple like this. \\server\root directory is where all permissions start. Employees are granted only Traverse Folder\Execute File and Liste Folder\Read Data permissions. This lets them get through to lower folders without being able to add/modify root level folders. At the next level folder employees have custom permissions which is Full Access checked and then edited in Advanced Security to remove Full Control, Change Permissions and Take Ownership. All other permissions are granted and nothing is denied. This gives the employees pretty much full access to that lower level folder and they can add, remove, modify...everythin…

In 'Authoring a Fully Verified signed Installation' from MSDN, one of the bullet items is to ensure that only custom actions stored within the package or installed with the package are used. Is this to say that having a digital signature in the installation package may not function correctly if a Custom Action calls to a target machine .exe during install (Regedit, attrib, etc.)? I'm a little confused by this?

OS is Vista Home Premium OEM by Gateway. The graphic for the buttons in most of the Help and Support panel show only a red X. "mouse over" reveals function dialog box. As I am having problems with other programs, I am wondering if there is not something fundamentaly amiss with the OEM installation. -- Life is not a banquet it is a covered dish dinner. What do you bring to the table?

Hi, I'm trying to change file properties of files stored in a network mapped drive. For example a go to file properties > summary > Title example >> Ok. Then when I'm going to see the Title (putting Windows Explorer in Details View) it appear in blank. These don't happen if I put directly the Title from the computer that I'm accessing through network. Any suggestion will be really appreciate. Working in: Windows XP SP2

After looking at all of the postings, I still can't find an answer so here is the problem. I have a laptop running Vista Business, with remote turned on. I'm trying to connect to the notebook from a desktop running XP pro. I do connect to the Laptop and get the "sign on screen" but after I sign on it will give me a "Timed Out....." warning after awhile. Now the laptop is running on wireless and we are doing this on our in house network and not thru the internet. So what could be the problem on the Vista Machine? Could it be that the desktop doesn't have enough RAM in it (512MB ram) to run the remote Vista so in return I get the time out warning ? T…

Ribbons.scr seems to not leave memory when i select it for the screensaver, seems windows doesnt want to let go of it so it eats up alot of the cpu untill i kill it out of memory, it seems to be only the little preview screen that is doing this, when i select it as a screensaver it doesnt leave even if i select another screensaver. I have 8 gig of memory 2.6ghz dual core processor, 8800 gtx Ultra Video card, so i dont think its lack of hardware. Funny thing about this if i select it as the screensaver then close the screensaver screen and kill ribbons out of memory it runs and works correctly, its only the little preview screen of it that will not leave …

I have a wireless router/modem and PCs connected wirelessly to it. Sometimes it gets into a non-working state but turning the router/modem off and on again fixes it. I would like to do this once a day without having to go to other floors to find out if anyone is using it at the moment. How can I determine if the internet is in use? If anyone else is using it at the moment I would wait for a while and try again later.

It looks like the Windows 2003 SBS is locking up files and it wont release those files when you are done.
