I have a W2K SP 4 server set up as a file server to store roaming profiles. The past admins did not ensure the "Allow caching of files in this shared folder" check mark was cleared. This has caused profile issues for our users and we end up rebuilding the profile. Is there a registry setting that would ensure caching was disabled when a new folder was created and/or ensure caching is not allowed on exisitng folders? Any other ideas on how to turn off this feature without touching each folder? Please let me know if you need further info to help me out! TIA

Hello, In a domian environment, it seems that Vista takes on a completely different roaming profile then XP. This is userprofile.V2. The headache of this when moving users from XP to Vista is that all their settings are lost and that I have to manually move things such as favourites and desktop items across to their V2 profile. Has Microsoft not given any useful sync tool on this?? I was wondering how people have managed to tackle this problem and to discuss ideas?? Many thanks, Luke

Hello, I recently got a 500GB Seagate ST3500630AS. I got a primary a partition 35GB (vista will go on it later!), it's empty, an extended partition takes up the rest of the drive. In it a 40GB partition with XP on it & 2x 200GB Partitions. The disk it's self seems rather slow when I want stuff & CPU usage fluctuates & then dies off & things are ok! If I change a folder with videos to thumbnail view the system chokes till it's completed. No idea why it does this. It's running on a Sata II port, I've limited the disk to 150 no change so I've left it on 300. All my drivers, firmware are up to date. My biggest problem is when Outlook 2003 opens. C…

Hi All, Having a problem with a brand new machine running XP Pro SP2...all latest updates. Not sure if it's related to Anti Virus (CA Anti Virus)or Firewall (Zone Alarm Pro) software. Whenever I plug in a USB memory key, the dialog appears prompting me to open and view folder (or other suitable options), but when I hit OK, explorer freezes for a short time (10-20 secs) and then the folder will open. This also happens if I dismiss the dialog and try to open explorer directly after the usb key is connected....Explorer wont appear for at least 10-20 seconds. It appears to completely freeze explorer.... Interestingly, if I have explorer open on the screen and …

My home desktop (2ghz Core Duo, 1gb ram) runs 2003 Server (mainly so I can use TS when traveling). It's a recent re-install of Standard Edition Sp2 and was working great. Suddenly (I'm sure I had something to do with it), certain functions have become very slow. Several examples: Invoking IE6 displays a partially built window for 15 seconds before loading my home page. It's a lattice-work of blue lines with the previous screen contents showing through during the pause. Invoking Eudora7 takes about the same time. Most other applications start up immediately. One peculiar one is that if I cut/paste between applications, the paste takes the same 15 sec…

Enterprise Root CA on Windows Server 2003 Std - hard drive was removed from the server and stored in a locked cabinet. Just over two years ago, a certificate was created, which apparently allowed EFS in our domain. Last week, the certificate expired, and we stopped being able to set the encrypted flag on folders. We now see the message, "Recovery policy configured for this system contains invalid recovery certificate." All the KB docs says to renew the certificate, or issue a new one. We plugged in the hard drive from above, only to discover that it has failed, so we cannot renew this particular cert or revive the Root CA. I suppose we could create a …

I wasn't really sure where to put this, as it's related to internet downloads, but not just to IE. The problem I am getting is that downloads of any largish files (>1MB), either via IE7 (includes trying to view streaming video or file downloads), Windows Media Player or Outlook 2003 (i.e. files attached in e-mails), get to a point & then just hang. Outlook times out, but IE & WMP just sit there. This even effects YouTube! I am running XP Pro, with SP2, on an AMD Athlon 4000 laptop, with 1GB RAM, so performance is not an issue. I have several other machines that connect through the same network without any problems. Any ideas

If you are having any problems opening video links in Internet Explorer 7 such as Windows Media Player will not open when you click a video link. Also if you think Nero 7 might be at fault for this problem. There is a very easy fix and you don't need to uninstall anything just change a simple setting and you should not have any more problems. So close Internet Explorer and go to Control Panel and open Default Programs. Then click on Set Program Access and Computer Defaults then click Continue. Now click the dot in Custom and click the down arrows next to Custom. Now choose Internet Explorer as your default web browser and then scroll down to default media …
