Terminal Services allows access, But not allowed at Console.

I can open a terminal services session to a Windows Server 2003. Then from that session I can log into the file system on another Server 2000. No problem. However if I use the console of the Server 2003 directly, and attempt to log into the Server 2000 it fails with invalid login attempt. Both theses servers are on the same domain, and report to a third Server 2003 as the domain controller / active directory. Any idea why access is authenticated through terminal services, but blocked when direct access is attempted? Regards, Andyh

Explorer/runas/remote session problem
by Guest Rich Raffenetti- 0 replies

I regularly RDP via VPN from my home XP Pro to my office XP Pro. I use VB6 on my office PC and sometimes need to use it with my administrative account so I use RunAs via the right-click method. When I do RunAs of VB6, my explorer locks up with some broken graphics on the start bar. (I place the start bar on the left side of the display.) I get out of this by running task manager on the remote system with ctrl-alt-end, terminating explorer, and starting explorer again with the run option on the task manager. Up to this time, I had found that after a reboot, the problem did not come back right away. That is, the runas functioned as expected. Tonight I ra…

Help needed - XP Pro Freezing Up

I thought this issue was related to just IE but today I realize, the issue affects my XP system in general, not just XP. I thought it was only IE because I surf mostly on the pc. I have a dual core pc, with 1 gig ram, IE 7, all patches, have and up to date antivirus and firewall and run XP Pro. While surfing the net, I find that over time, I can't open a link in a new tab. I try to open it and nothing happens. No errors whatsoever. When this first happens, I can get around it by closing one tab and then opening the one I want. Over time this doesn't work and if I have more then one copy of IE open, if I close one copy of IE, then I can open another tab. …

Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit MSI.dll version 4.0.6000.16386 dated 02/11/2006 10:46 size 2,095,616 bytes I manually run 'Windows Update', for Windows and other products from Microsoft update, at least once a week on a Wednesday, and at other times during the week. A number of times over the last few months, usually when there are a number of updates part way through the installation process i get a popup message stating 'Windows Modules Installer stopped working and was closed'. The installation process hangs at this point and i have to restart the computer. Running the update again finds the previous update which usually installs the second time arou…

slowing down server 2003

A server at a customers site slows down a couple of times a day. (Windows 2003 sp2 -sp2 installed hoping to resolve the problem, so the problem already exists when only sp1 was installed-) in the beginning of this problem I noticed the following error message in the servers logfile: _______________________ Windows saved user DOMEIN\user registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalSer…

With Vista I have a blind spot about folder views always being how I don't want them. I know that this topic has come up ad nauseam, but if someone can summarise the topic clearly and patiently I would be most grateful. In particular: 1. What types of folder template are there in Windows Vista? 2. How do I tell (other than guessing from its appearance) which template a particular folder is using? 3. If I think a folder should be using a different template how do I change it? 4. When I set up a new folder (for example by right-clicking in Windows Explorer) which template does it default to? 5. Can I directly edit, save (and lock down - see 6) the propert…

Right to left not working on plain text
by Guest kalevet- 0 replies

Hi all, I work on a fairly new workstation, with fully updated XP SP2 installed. I work a lot with Hebrew, and at the beginning I had no problems. However, at some point I think the right-to-left support got screwed. I can still read and write Hebrew letters, but on certain occasions the letters are ordered backwards, from left to right. The problem seems to happen only on plain text controls. I can't use Notepad properly now (for both reading and writing), but the browser or Word display Hebrew text just fine. It should also be noted that on the problematic controls I can't change the text alignment, and it is always aligned to the left. On the ones that di…

Windows Backup Utility: Lost Power During Restore Job
by Guest Firecracker- 0 replies

So the power cord connected to my Seagate USB disk drive fell out in the middle of a restore job. I looked in the directory where the .bkf file was *supposed* to be and it was no longer there. Does anyone have ANY idea where the file could be? I did a search for the exact file name but it's not on my local system OR the backup drive. Side note: I was restoring the files from my backup disk to another machine on my home network (an iMac). I don't think it should matter, but thought I'd mention it. Would *really* appreciate help on this. I'm a consultant and I had client files on it. I've been trying to burn dvds all day to avoid just this issue..figures.

How can I get the handle for the Taskbar
by Guest Sanjeev Sharma- 0 replies

I have rather two questions. First, where do I query technical stuff like this(Q on Subject) about WIndows? And second the question itself. I need to get handle for the taskbar but I don't know its window name so as to use 'FindWindow'. Anyother way? The code may be specific to WinXP and may be coded in VB or C++.

I am trying to work around a temporary situation on a Windows 2003 server where group policy was misapplied. NETWORK SERVICE and LOCAL SERVICE accounts no longer have impersonate privileges and start service privilege so I need to temporarily start up services in security context of SYSTEM, get group policy working, then patch up services to run in their original contexts. I have done this before we success, but this time I'm thrown for a loop by DNS Client service, which is not able to start in NETWORK SERVICE security context. In the registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache there are two values: ImagePath %S…
