Oops, todays update = dead screensaver
by Guest Clive Williams- 0 replies
Dear all, I use a screensaver that I wrote myself in .NET 1.1 whose job is to kill off unnecessary processes (ITunes' Ipodservice, Realplayer update, etc) that vendors in their infinite wisdom choose to make next to impossible to disable permanently. It has worked fine until today's updates, when the call Process.Kill is now throwing a 'permission denied' error. I see nothing explicit in the update release notes to suggest that anything's definitely been locked down in this area, though I can well imagine that it might have been. Can anyone help me confirm what's going on? Was there something in today's updates that would stop a screensaver having the abili…

Is it possible to allow Power Users to use the Indexing Service in Windows XP? Power Users can enable the service, but when you launch the Indexing Service via ciadv.msc as a Power User, you can't do much of anything (add catalog, add directories, etc) by default. Any ideas?

windows 2003 and windows vista

Hello all, I am not sure if I am posting in the correct forum, but we are experiencing an issue that just started yesterday. We have a windows 2003 server that is our print server and up until yesterday afternoon, clients that were running Vista were able to select a printer from the server and print to it - even though the Vista driver was not installed on it. Right now, when trying to print to the same print device on the print server, clients are getting an error that is telling them that they need to download the driver in order to connect. I know that this is a very basic question, but has anyone experinced this issue and if so, how was it resolved? What I…

RE: Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB936507)

Disabling Spysweeper was insufficient to get this update working. Refering to the \Windows\WindowsUpdate.log, there was a key that SYSTEM did not have permission to write to. In my case it was: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\xmlfile\ShellEx\IconHandler By changing the permissions for SYSTEM on the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\xmlfile\Shel from "this key" to "this key and subkeys" the install succeeded through Microsoft Update. Maximize Folders
by Guest CLB- 0 replies

When I right mouse click on Windows Explorer, I click on Properties. At that time I select the Shortcut Tab and under Run select Maximized. I click Apply and than click OK. When I double-click the same shortcut, the window opens in Normal, not Maximized. I have tried this several times to no avail. Is there someplace else that I need to go to get the folders to open in Maximize Mode? -- CLB

I have just upgreaded to VISTA Enterprise, from XP SP2. I can no longer connect to other computers (my servers) using Remote Desktop Connection. I get a message about 'Data Execution Prevention'. I follow the steps and have 'Remote Desktop Connection' checked so that it will not be protected by Data Execution Prevention. No change, it still will not connect. I can ping the devices, open any shares off them, etc.. Any clues on what is wrong?

The problem is: When I make a change to my system i.e. new driver, etc I would like to create a system restore point just in case of a malfunction. When I try to create a restore point I get this message on my Systems Property Window under the tab system protection Automatic Restore Point "Configuration is disabled by group policy" and "Restore Point creation disabled by group policy." What kind of system protection is that? Is it protecting my system from my protection? Yes I think so. Is there anyway to change the group policy on windows Vista Premium since it is unavailable in the premium version? Wow. This PC belongs to ME not Microsoft. I have…

I have tried to repair my installation. I have lost the ability to create a restore point and I cannot make a back up. I have tried every solution offered to me on the NG but nothing works. localgroup add - language independent

Hello, in my installation process of my programm, sometimes I need a new user. A user which is member of 'Power User'. In the script, I create the user > net user Tester Password /add and add the user to 'Power User' >net localgroup "Power User" Tester /add This is OK. But I need this on a lot of different Windows Languages, and the groups have different names - in Germany: Hauptbenutzer, ..... With the API function - NetLocalGroupAddMembers(..., ...) I have the same problem. I saw, in a ADs example - they also work the name 'Administrators'. But I need language independent localgroup-names. So long Frank Iversen

service stops and HKEY_USER hive disappears
by Guest Jocky Mac- 0 replies

I have a service to run an application. The service actually just uses srvany.exe to launch an application. Once it has done this the service stops leaving the application running. The service runs under a local userid. Normally, the service starts and a registry hive for the user is loaded under HKEY_USERS. When the service stops, the hive remains. One one machine, however, when the service stops the hive disappears. Does anyone know why?
