Diagnosing a mouse issue on a Toshiba Tecra Laptop
by Guest Umar Reyi- 0 replies

I have a Toshiba Tecra A4 laptop running Windows XP Pro. It has 2 USB ports. When I connect a mouse to any of the USB ports, I see the following message (displayed only once, not consistenly each time I connect the mouse to the USB port): USB Device Not Recognized One of the USB ports has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. I checked the Device Manager and verified that (1) USB Root Hub and (2) USB Universal & Enhanced Host Controller are working. Simply put, only my touchpad seems to work. However the mouse that I am using does not appear to work. Besides the mouse that I was originally using, I have tried 3 different mouse, but…

Is it always required that the pagefile is 1.5 x system memory??

Is it possible and reasonable to reduce the pagefile in a server with 4GB RAM (3 GB usable, /3GB switch, Windows Server 2003 Standard) to 2GB from 4GB?? What are the performance monitors I need to look at in Performance Monitor to know how much the pagefile is really being used?? These servers are for Exchange 2003 (also DC, file/print) and SQL 2005. OR -- is it better to me to just move the pagefile to the larger one of the two partitions on the server?? That is, from C:\ to D:\?? (C is smaller than it should be, D is quite large) I know that the servers will eventually have to be rebuilt or replaced but if I can move or resize the pagefile, I can put thi…

vista hangs after login - seems specific to user
by Guest robr- 0 replies

I did a clean install of Vista Business, it was working fine for a while, then it started hanging about 30 seconds after I logged into the administrator account every single time. So I booted in safe mode and logged into administrator (it worked) and ran MSCONFIG and disabled just about everything I could think of, then rebooted normally and logged back into administrator. It still hung. So I then rolled back to a previously known good config from a couple of weeks prior, but that didn't help. I had an alternate user account I had created and logged into that. It worked!!! No more hangs..... then........ I remote desktopped in from my wife's XP machine. …

Failed Domain controller

Hi all, I walked in on a new job, they had two DCs Win 2K and one has been dead for weeks, no backups…. One DC is operational. I bought a new server Win 2003 R2 server and all hot fixes are installed. Can not join the domain because the failed DC name is the same is the new box….I thought I should force removing the old DC name from AD and seize any FSMO role to the existing DC which is win 2k advanced server. I plan to run adprep / forestprep and domainprep and run dcpromo on the new box. I would like to know if you think my plan will work before I start this process, and learn how to remove a filed DC from active directory… Thanks

Patch management
by Guest Steve- 0 replies

I've been using NetChk Protect to install Windows patches for the past couple years on an XP machine, when they offered the service free to individuals. It installs multiple patches at once, reboots automatically when necessary, and avoids the WGA issue. Unfortunately, they're no longer free, and they're really set up to deal with Fortune 500-type companies. Anyone know of another service that might be more suited to an individual? Other than WindowsUpdate, of course. :) I'm now using a Vista PC. -- The most important tool of the scientist is the wastebasket. ....Albert Einstein

Searching the Directory for Shared Printers
by Guest James U- 0 replies

I tried to add network a printers to a workstation by clicking Start > Search > Find Printers and then clicked Find Now. In the past I got all the printers shared from each of my print servers. Now I am only getting shared network printers on workstations throughout the domain, not any on the print servers. All the printers are shared correctly on the servers and I can still map a printer by browsing the server (\\SERVERNAME) and selecting connect. Any idea why all the print server printers will not display? Any idea how to get them back? Thanks, James

I did not have the problem you did concerning the Hal.dll. But three times in the past three years I have encountered the "missing ASMS file" error -- using different XP setup CDs (all legal), and several different kinds of DVD and CD ROM drives. You ask, "can it be that an installation disk ask for files it did not put into the CD to begin with ... "? I think the answer to that question is yes. I would be interested to know what year appears on the Windows setup CD you used, as I suspect the bug might have been fixed sometime in 2004 or later. I am only interested in the year if it's a valid Microsoft hologram type CD you used, or a media that came with an…

Highly Available VPN server
by Guest LSI- 0 replies

I've been tasked with replacing our W2K RRAS-based VPN server, and rather than just do a simple hardware swap-out, I'd like to introduce high availability in whatever solution I use. This solution could be as simple as providing two different vpn servers, or as complex as a cluster/NLB solution, but I want it to be transparent to the end user. In other words, I want them to be able to double-click a single desktop icon to connect, rather than, "if this one doesn't connect, use the other one." Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I say forget about these updates until MS finds a fix. You can set up to ignore these updates at the windows update page or turn off all updates by going to the control panel and clicking on Automatic updates.
