I usually split up services as much as possible but now the servers are getting more powerfull than strictly necessary for the job to do so I was thinking of using the file server as web server also, more specific as a sharepoint services server is this a smart thing to do or not? the service is strictly for LAN only so not exposed to the big bad internet it is a quad core Xeon with 4GB ram and windows 2003 standard 64 bit OS this for about 150 users in total thnx

scenario: 19" widescreen monitor 4 port ps/2 kvm switch 1 comp duel boot kubuntu/windows xp problem: when windows loads up, it doesnt detect the monitor, im presuming this is because of the kvm switch, and will not go greater then 1386x800(or something similar). i need it to be able to tell it to use 1440 instead, no matter what windows thinks. i know that i am able to use 1440x900 through the kvm because kubuntu is working with it fine. i have tried installing the drivers 4 the monitor but it wont auto detect the correct driver, and forcing it to use the correct drivers only allows the 1386 resolution stated above. unplugging the kvm and plugging the …

Overlapping DFS with DFRS problem
by Guest Anders- 0 replies

Hello, previously I had set up a FRS replication but after upgrading the servers to Win 2003 R2 I deleted the previous FRS namespace and targets in order to create a new DFRS replication scheme from scratch. The problem is that I cannot enable the DFRS replication as I end up with the following suggestion: "Fix this problem by not overlapping this replicated folder with an FRS replica set. That is, do not replicate the same local path using DFS Replication and FRS." In other words the previous FRS replication stills seems to be in the system but I did delete it from the DFS console so how am I supposed to really get rid of the remaning FRS settings?

Software Restriction Policies and Symantec Antivirus

Hello, I recently implemented SRPs in my Windows network, thoroughly testing many things before deployment. So, after deploying SRPs everything works fine: allowed programs start, disallowed programs don't. However, I have problem with Symantec AntiVirus 10.x clients - they appear like their Auto Protect is disabled (SAV yellow shield icon is in red circle), but SAV client software itself is running, i.e. I see yellow shield icon in the task tray, I can double click it, SAV client opens, I can run scans etc etc. Before deploying SRPs SAV worked fine without trouble. SRPs config is set to default, appart from that I am exclusively allowing to run all…

It worked on me, I am running Windows Vista Home Premium, first I deleted as much as I could in SOftwareDistribution folder, then I got error 80070003 and then Windows Help Files walked me easily on solving this, by stoping Windows Update services and deleting content on two specific folders. Thanks! July Update issues
by Guest Steve Garry- 0 replies
Seems that there are 'issues' with the july patches. 2 machines done so far, problems with both. Machine 1 is XP home, machine 2 is XP Pro. The issue seems to be that for some reason, a restart is not enough. One machine froze when restarting, the other would not correctly reload the (Zone Labs) Firewall. In both cases, a power down followed by a cold boot seems to have got things working again. My guess is that there was something left in memory that confused things to the extent of screwing a program after the restart. There are times when I wonder about the validity of alllowing any machine to update from the web, in that all I seem to get recent…

Win98se cursors & themes

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Win98se themes and cursors in WinXP. I have two drives hooked up, one with WinXP Pro SP2 and the other Win98se. Can I copy cursor and theme files from Win98 to WinXP without a problem. I have done this but it seems(not sure) that some of the cursors give me trouble with the cursor locking up after awhile(not all the time). I have done some investigation and it seems that the Nature cursors from Win98 Plus package work alright. I have checked with Paint Shop Pro and for the most part those cursors are 4bit/16 color cursors. When I switch to Travel(8bit/256 color) cursors I will get lockups after awhile. I could go …

32-bit server, mixed 32/64-bit clients?
by Guest Hurricane Andrew- 0 replies

What are the issues that I should anticipate in such a setup? Specifically, I'd like to tread slowly in the move to 64-bit. I have a simple home network setup: 1 Longhorn 32-bit standard server 1 dual boot Vista/XP client 32-bit (main PC, Vista default OS) 1 dual boot XP/Vista client 32-bit (kids PC, XP default OS) All are on a single domain. Both clients are capable of 64-bit. The server is as well, but I'd like to hammer out any 64-bit issues, quirks, etc. on a client before messing with the server, plus most of my kids' games and such aren't ready for the 64-bit plunge, so their PC will be stuck on 32-bit XP Pro for the foreseeable future. …
