I recently upgraded to Windows XP and since then have been troubleshooting through many possible solutions to my sound problem. After upgrading my sound stopped working properly, if I turn on my speakers I get a scratchy/static sound from them. I found an article\forum post (which unfortunately I can no longer find) that said Windows XP does not support ISA cards, and disables ISA to PCI routing by default. My Dell OptiPlex GX1 has an integrated Crystal CS4236b Audio System and from what I understand it is 16-bit ISA. There was a registry edit on the post that I tried, but it did nothing. I copied the instructions I found, this is what they said to do: With 200…

My friend Jerry Pournelle calls Unix the full-employment act for computer wizards (presumably a reference to the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment Act of 1978). Similarly, I regard Moore's Law as the full-employment act for computer pundits. I've written about it several times myself (e.g. here and here); the ... Link To Original Article

(Sorry for the brief hiatus... I had an important deadline to deal with at the office.) On July 5, Microsoft announced that it was offering three years of warranty coverage for the "three red flashing lights" problem on the Xbox 360 (press release here). This announcement began an interesting series of statements, interpretations and outright false conclusions from a variety of sources. The press release ... Link To Original Article

We have been using Windows Vista Business RTM and me and two of my colleagues have experienced this behaviour, which has happened to each of us once. What happens is while you are using your computer, Vista performs a restart, then restores all your apps to their previous state. It's really bizarre, because shutdown and subsequent startup are normal, in the sense that they don't include undesirable behaviour like errors or a blue screen. What is not normal is: 1. The fact that you as the user don't initiate the restart. 2. When the restart is complete and once you log on again, applications are started again and restored to their previous state auto…

Recently, Windows did not start on switching on the pc. An option appeared telling me that Windows failed to start, and offered to investigate and repair. The programme looked for errors, repaired, and re-started the machine. The pc now works. My question is :Is there a way that I can find out what was wrong, and what the programme did to repair the software? Thanks

Lots of questions about how to do this, but mine is about how to undo this setting. Everytime I re-arrange (by dragging) my favorites into an order of my own, they all go back to alphabetic after I've closed IE (6). How annoying! I would like my favorites in my order thanks, microsoft! Anyone know how? Cheers.

This may sound like a silly question, but I'm in the process of running Windows Update for the first time in several months. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate and some of the updates in the past didn't install. I tried several things and they still wouldn't work so I just disable Windows Update. Today I noticed that a new version of Windows Update was available so I thought I'd try all the updates. There were a lot of them totalling back all the way to early April. So far I have no reason to necessarily doubt it's success, but I'm worried because each time my computer turns on it says "configuring updates," but then it restarts ("shutting down"). Th…

I have been having problems with the control panel basically the uninstall programs panel is corrupted and someone told me to re-enable the UAC under my profile. Well, as soon as I re-enabled it I could not log on to Windows! The computer restarted and on the log on screen when I clicked on my name and put in the password, windows started logging on normally (saw the welcome sign) ... and immediately the logging off message appeared. I tried a couple of times with the same results. Fortunately I had created a restore point prior to the change and I was able to go back. How can I fix this UAC problem? Maybe this is related to my control panel issue. Thank …
