Recently I have been getting the error message "Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host has stopped working" popping up every 10 seconds when Vista is building its search index. After indexing is complete, the messages disappear. In the event viewer, the corresponding application errors show up: Faulting application SearchProtocolHost.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549b668, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bd80, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00045208, process id 0x16ec, application start time 0x01c7ce62a8eaadd8. I have tried system restore, but none of my restore points worked, so it looks like …

My Vista PC shows up in WSUS 3.0 and WSUS says it needs 18 updates. But "Windows Update" reports it is up to date. Checking WSUS by schedule or by forcing a WSUS check (clicking the "Check for updates") finds no updates. This is my first Vista machine so I have most likely missed something. Any ideas please.

Vista's photo gallery displays images that have been rotated by another program as vertical (or horizontal) lines (actually it shows a width of just a few pixels). Other programs (even Microsofts) display the images fine, only photo gallery seems to have a problem (mis-interpreted exif information?) Rotating one of these images within Photo Gallery, does not solve the problem, the veritcal line changes to a horizontal line for a few seconds, then changes back to a vertical line again. The only solution i've found so far is using another program to rotate them 90 degrees, then use photo gallery to rotate back to the desired angle. Anyone experiencing the s…

I think this whole virtualization thing is nice, however, in terms of organization, it's a complete mess. Every time an uncompatible Vista program comes along and obtains a file I want to view, I gotta go searching for it. If there was a nice structure that went something like this, it would be easier for end-users: User files-Only for user related stuff. User access only. Virtual Store-prgm config files, generated files, logs, etc go here. (basikly all the garbage n00bs don't get) Admin and prgm access only. Prgm Files-Only for installers and uninstallers. Installer and admin access only. OS files-Only for OS stuff. OS access only. Maybe I am wrong a…

I have made multiple complete backups on the external usb drive and vista can only see the most current. If I look on the drive I only see one image and it is the most current. When I run a new backup the screen shows the oldest backup was in February which is true, restore can only see the most current. Thanks Paul

I have a SCSI scanner (Relisys) and connected an Adaptec AVA-2906 Fast SCSI PCI card in the appropriate expansion slot. I loaded the scanner driver from a CD I purchased (and downloaded the Adaptec Driver for Windows, version 4.71) from the web. My PC uses Windows XP Media Center edition. I am using Presto Image Folio which I installed from a CD. I have 2 problems. First, when I turn on the scanner and then the computer, the computer tells me I have new hardware installed (the SCSI card and scanner) and that I must load the driver. This program does not recognize the scanner driver from the CD, or from the hard drive when I copy it from the CD or from the files wh…

There are 2 things we are having problems with. 1. Domain GPO will work with VISTA but if you create a GPO on the OU containing Vista the settings will not take affect. They are both enabled. Why? 2. When you try to use the Group Policy Manager to query the results of the policies affecting a Vista pc an error pops ups saying: Failed to connect. Check WMI service. The service is running. What now?

I've given up on anyone fixing the Vista Photo Screensaver. For the record, it flashes through each picture about every 6 seconds, even at the "slow" setting. It was annoying. F.Y.I. -- XP screensavers work in Vista (Ultimate ed. for me). Copy the ssmypics.scr from an XP C:\windows\system32 folder to the same one on your Vista machine. And. Done. The "My Pictures Slideshow" is now available for a screensaver, with up to 3 minutes viewing available before the picture changes. Someone changed this program to the Vista version. It's obvious they spent more time with the different transitions and less time thinking about how well the old prog…

I have two servers (Win2K3 SP1) identically configured for SNMP. They both have two different community strings. On one server an application is able to poll String A. On the other it can't. Checking the firewall the request passes towards the server but never comes back. From the firewall a test of String B works fine. We have double checked the community string is spelled correctly Netstat also confirms that port 161 is open. Nothing in the event logs. Is there anything else I can check to confirm the request is making it to the server and what happens inside? I was thinking netmon might show me the packets. Is there any value in recreating the comm…
