Hi All, We're currently experiencing some issues with ODBC connectivity in Windows 2003. Basically when I define an OBDC String for example for SQL Server and populate the following details as follows: Select System DSN Click Add Select SQL Server Enter Name, Description and Servername e.g. SQLSERVER01 Then select TCPIP Test Connection OK Then after a couple of hours the SQL Servername loses the SQLSERVER01 and reverts back to the previous Servername of the above DSN Previously used and deleted. i.e. Servername reverts to: OLDSERVER in ODBC. Thanks in advance, Aaron Jumani.

Hi Folks Query relating to the "everyone group (Pre Windows 20000)." We have a Windows 2003 domain which was upgraded from Windows NT 4.0. I am aware under windows 2003 that the membership of the everyone was changed so that it no longer contains the token for anonymous. It seems that newly created users are no longer automatically added to the everyone group but they are added to the "domain users" group. However the "everyone" group is still the default group set on permissiosn tabs (Shares ETC) Question: So is it best practice to 1) Manally add all individual domain users to the "Everyone Group" 2) Clear all users from the "Everyone Group…

My XP installation is suddenly not shutting down the computer completely when I shut down Windows. I ends with the message "It's now safe to turn off your computer" but I can't turn it off except by holding the power button in for 5 seconds which surely can't be the right way to do it. Somethings gone wrong because when I try to run Vista upgrade I get a message saying the computer doesn't have suitable power mangement control (or something similar and I should update my BIOS). The installation wont continue from within windows. But if I install Vista as a clean installation on the same computer (different partition) I get no such error and installation compl…

I wanted to make the Shut down in Vista the same as XP and went to Power Options, then Power Buttons and Lid, then Start Menu Power Button, then Sleep and in drop down clicked Shut Down then OK. The Start Button changed and when it was clicked the computer shut down. When I went to re-start the computer it is just blank. Nothing is happening, even the mouse and keyboard do nothing - dont even light up.

Hello, I did a synronization from My Documents to our network file share and during the synronization from directors did not copy over. Now in both places there are directories missing. When I go to MY Recent Documents I see the folders on the system (laptop) but when I click on the MY RECENT DOCUMENTS folder it says the file is missing...does anyone know how to find those folders that are neither on the server or in My Documents...it is like they just disappeared.

I am using a Compaq Presario SR1710NX with Windows XP and SP2. I have a X10 Wireless Camera System hooked into my computer. Included with the system is a X10 USB Digital Video Converter. Even though I have installed the software for the Converter, and it is working just fine, each and every time that I boot up my computer, the New Hardware Wizard opens up, and wants me to install the software for the particular piece of hardware. I have to close the New Hardware Wizard every time, because if I try to install what it wants me to install (which is already installed), I end up with the "Blue Screen of Death", and have to do a hard shutdown on my computer and boot …

I am in the similar situation as BK. But as my "My Documents" folder was on a completely separate hard drive, I didn't think I had to back them up: I thought that all my files would be safe and still accessible after reinstalling XP Pro! But, although I have managed to move most of my files out of My Documents folder onto my main hard drive prior to getting a new PC and scrapping my smaller HDD, there are still certain file types that I get "Access Denied" on when I try to copy or move them across. These are all pdf and wordpad files. If I had KNOWN they wouldn't be accessible, I WOULD have backed them up - or moved them all onto my main hard drive! But judgi…

Is there a way to change the background color(s) on the Vista Sidebar? Mine fades from transparent to black, and I'd rather have it all transparent or fade to a different color on my white background. Any ideas, perhaps editing the XML file? Thanks in advance, PJ

16-bit applications no longer run on my PC. This includes a part of Adobe Lightroom (!) that checks periodically for photos to download (apdproxy.exe). If it is attempted to run a 16-bit application, Windows reports the error: "NTVDM has encountered a problem and needs to close." Until recently, 16-bit applications ran OK. I'm not sure what caused this problem; it may have been installiing Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition, or it may be that this application uncovered the problem. I obtained hotfix 890076 from Microsoft and installed it with no errors reported. Per the associated knowledge base article, the files listed below are supposed to update, how…

Hi, I have an issue with my snipping tool....It only works on a fresh reboot..any time after that it will either have a dark (non transparent) grey screen OR the screen shows my taskbar repeatedly (on the whole screen) instead of the normal transparent screen....Using the screen capture button and pasting it into Paint has the same affect...my screen capture would be my taskbar repeated many, many times. I also beleive this has something to do with my screen saver as when the screen saver comes on...I see my taskbar ontop of my taskbar etc etc etc.. Thanks for your time! Wayne

Hi, 2 things.... I am using Vista Premium 64bit OS and I have always had an issue with watching DVD's or movie files from my HDD Camcorder on Vista. The picture would start and stop (stuttering) throughout the movie. Only when I did a reboot the movie would play well, but if you had the computer on for awhile (10mins or longer) it would then 'stutter' the movie. I only found this download accidently when I was looking online for others (and there are many) that had this same issue. This d/l corrected my issue..or at least so far. Why isnt this posted as an recommended update??? Also I still have an issue with my snipping tool....It only works on a f…

Hello, I was very curious to perform my first 64 bit build with Visual Studio 2005. I am particularly interested in seeing the disassembly of the 64 bit (cpu) instructions =D However I was surprised by the following error message when trying to debug it (after having created a new target/x64 configuration setting): "Workstation service not started". Apperently this service is needed for debugging x64 applications ??? Why ??? I can run the executable without debugging. I shall now enable the workstation service if I run into any more problems I will let these two newsgroup know )>D Bye, Skybuck.

I have 2 identical Dell PC's. On one PC, the printer control panel shows only the single installed printer. But on the other PC, both the single installed printer AND an "Add Printer" icon is shown. This extra icon is redundant since there is a menu item above the icons to add a new printer. Additionally, when printing with some of my older applications, Add Printer is shown as an output device, which is definitely wrong! How can I get rid of this icon? Thanks, MrBill
