Hi, I'm trying to find a way to determine which drivers and which services will be started when I boot a computer in Safe Mode. So any of you know about this topic ? For example, does Windows look in the registry to determine if a driver will be loaded ? Is there a special key responsible for this ? Thank you Al

As you know the user can export all cookies from Internet Explorer into one singel file by the menu File->Import and Export... Now I want to compare such a cookie backup file (created in the past) with the cookies currently existing. Is there such a tool which can do that ? Alternatively a utilty would be fine for comparing two exported cookies archives. Tobias

Last night I tried to 'start' MichSU's 'Java Secure Application Manager' to my 64-bit Vista Ultimate machine but it froze about 80% through the process, so I gave up. I don't know if this is related, but this morning I discovered my 2 lmgrd.exe-guarded software packages weren't working. On echoing one startup batch file, got message that it could not find the port designated in the license file. Then I tried using an Offc 2007 help menu and it failed to start. Then I tried Foxfire alone. When trying to load any URL got blank page with 'done' in lower lefthand corner. When quitting out of Foxfire got Windows message that Foxfire had failed. Tried IE with s…

After almost 2 years of unsuccessful installation of most updates, I finally found a cure for this error which seemed to have everyone stumped. Please pardon me if you already know of this fix I have not been actively seeking a cure recently. My sincerest thanks to Patricia who posted her fix in June, 2006. It is here: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=9d7ef903-a471-4d4a-b4ef-f94dc045fc44&p=1 After following the instructions, WU dl'd and sucessfully installed 59 updates for me. I imagine one should be able to delete the digitally unsigned files in the temp folder. Thank…

Now my original English version of Windows XP operating system now thinks it is a non-English, probably a Simplified Chinese version. This happened after I installed a english version of Chinese 3rd-party terminal service application accompanied with a terminal access device (similar to nComputing's L110). Now my Windows XP are still mostly English-based, but all the dialog buttons are in Chinese. My search in START button failed to work (complaining some files is missing). To resolve above, I need to use Windows Update, but it complaining that my Windows setup language is of different language... I really don't wish to re-install my entire PC with a fres…

Ok, so I have been having this problem with system restore erasing all of the restore points on every boot up. With the help of some people on here, I found the error that boldly states, "yep, I erased the restore points," and they are as follows: The first: Volsnap event id 25: The shadow copies of volume C: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time. Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied. And the second: Volsnap event id 27: The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened. Ho…

I've recently installed a graphics application (ACDSee Pro) under vista ultimate. During the installation I have the option of setting up associations for the program. This is done via the standard vista files association interface. The default installation basically associates ALL graphic file with the application - including icons. The pronlem is that I cannot remove certain file types from the association list (they are all greyed out). Furthermore, after installation, the same problem occures if I attempt to re-associate file types through the vista file asociation interface. The end result that certain program icons now show the ACDSee icon inste…

I've been having problems with my Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) for a while now. I don't really know how I would re-download or update it since I can't seem to find the download on microsoft.com (all they have is the xp versions). When I head into my service list the BITS file shows up with an error next to it. It reads: <Failed to Read Description. Error Code:988> And when I head into properties I get these errors: -Configuration Manager: A general internal error occured. -Invalid access to memory location. Can anyone here give advice to what I can do?

I have an Acer 9815 laptop with Vista Ultimate as the OS. I have set up a USB TV stick for use in the Media Centre and get brilliant reception but have difficulty keeping the system operational as it is prone to freeze the video and audio for no apparent reason and this also prevents almost all other programmes running. Initiallt I thought it wa sthe DVB TV stick but I have tried it on another laptop and it works fine also the frezze continues when I remove the stick from the USB port. The only way I can recover (sometimes) is to use Task Manager and end the processes of TVJoy and the smaller apps that are run by Media Centre, then restart the Media Cent…

Hi all, We run an AD shop on Server 2003 SP2, and have storage quotas setup for some of our NTFS volumes. I'm trying to come up with a solution that will do one of two things: 1) Allow a user X number of grace logins once they have exceeded their storage quota then deny them access with an appropriate error message (less desirable) 2) Deny user a desktop session once they have exceeded their quota limit, instead presenting them with a dialog box (or system, whatever) that will allow them to move/delete files until they are once again within the limits of their storage quota. Once this has been achieved they can again login as normal. Does anyone have a suggest…

Ever since I began using Vista Home Premium, I've had intermittant connection issues both with the internet and on e-mail. Most of the time everything works fine, but about 3 times a day, the connections won't go through. The problem can be solved either by retrying several times or by closing IE/7Outlook and starting over. Very annoying. I know it's not the Verizon dsl connection, since my wife is hard wired, via XP, to the same modem as I am, and her connections work fine. I thought it might be Norton 2007's firewall, but I tried everything they suggested with no ultimate effect. It's not IE7, since the same problem occurs if I use Firefox. I wo…
