Windows 2003 SP2 & WSUS 3.0
by Guest Dave Petzel- 0 replies

I have seen several threads asking about this but no answers, so I am going to post again. I have recently deployed WSUS 3.0 and everything seems to be working EXCEPT service pack 2 for Windows 2003 on some machines. ALL other updates seem to be working OK and even SP2 on some machines appears to be working. Here is what I can share about the machines that are not succeeding. When I view the status report for one of the problem machines it lists the update "Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (32-bit x86)" with an approval of install and a status of downloaded. Machines are configured VIA GPO and are set to install updates every day at 3:00 AM (This …

Damaged XP's recovery from Hibernation?
by Guest Richard- 0 replies

Hi All, I'm an avid fan of hibernation. I powering up a computer from a hibernation state is so much faster than allowing a re-boot. Today, however, I managed to screw up my recover. I keep an external hard-drive off-line (merely by keeping it switched off) except when I want to back-up or recover something from it. I switched it on today to either before or while I was recovering from hibernation. The adverse symptom I got was that AVG Free Edition's Control Center reports on component "Anti-Virus" that "Component is registered correctly; however determining status failed with error code 0x81000002." More significantly, running selected test repor…

Everything ran fine this morning including OE. Decided to download the new Adobe Flash Player on a Link in MSN.com. There was a warning but I accepted it, it was on a Microsoft site. Not installed I think. Did not see it in "Find". Immediately went to OE. Could not get on. Tried several times to no avail. Back to my Home page, it worked. Then to my Favorites, a newspaper, call it "Newsworld". Impossible to get on nor on a link of "Newsworld" which is also in my Favorites. Went to "System Restore" and got back to a previous restore point. OE worked. No problems. But impossible to get to "Newsworld". On the status bar I see: Web site found. Waiting for reply…

Wandering taskbar
by Guest Blithe- 0 replies

(Applicable to W2K (SP4) For a week now my taskbar randomly relocates to the top, then to the right of the desktop - and refuses to drag back to the bottom where I want it to stay. By 'randomly' I mean that once it relocates then it will stay a day or two then change position for another similar time period. I posted for a remedy here and microsoft.public.win2000.registry but the suggestions were to try dragging the taskbar back (a hopeless task) or to clear my system of malware that was causing the problem. I have since made all reasonable efforts to scan for malware. I was learning to live with the annoyance. However, today, July 23rd, the taskbar sudde…

TOP - - Data Rate tab
by Guest aaa- 0 replies

Hi, A tech support (idiot) clown from Startech.com insists that Window XP SP2 Device Manager / Ports (COM & LPT) / PCI Serial Port Properties should have a tab for "Data Rate" and an option to "Detect Clock Frequency" but I cannot find either. I have all currently available MS updates, hotfixes, patches, etc. When I first loaded Windows XP SP2, I chose to use Classic windows over XP windows and disabled Themes to ensure it. Would this choice eliminate the Data Rate tab and its various options? If so, when I roll back to XP windows, this tab does not appear. Any thoughts? Thank you. Anna Arkin

Advice on upgrading domain server and exchange server
by Guest David M. Wolff- 0 replies

I was just looking for some general advice and possible links to white papers that might help me. My network (12 server and 300 workstations) is currently running a windows 2000 domain controller and exchange 2000. I would like to upgrade to a Windows 2003 (64 bit) domain controller and Exchange 2007. Would it be better to upgrade my domain controller before my exchange server? Are there any concerns about running adprep on my windows 2000 domain server so I can add a windows 2003 backup domain controller? Once I have a windows 2003 backup domain controller can I just promote to be my primary domain controller? Are their any problems I should anticipate? Any he…

Mystery Case: First you can, then you can't write to CDRW under XP SP2. Problem....Help!
by Guest Umma Gumma- 0 replies

When Microsoft did an auto-update low these many months ago it disabled my ability to write directly to a CDRW with what I assume is a packet writing routine embedded in the operating system. Now, mysteriously, that ability has returned, presumably as a consequence of one of their subsequent auto-updates -- I know not why. I'm not complaing at all. I love it that it's returned. Hoewever, now I have an "icon" problem, is all I can say. Now no matter what view I apply, everything has an IE icon appended to it. I'll see the thumbnails of pictures for instance, but in the right hand corner there's an IE icon overlapping it. Why would this be the case....and will "fix…

Troubleshooting RunOnce - how to determine why some (not all) entries FAILED to fire?
by Guest ParanoidMike- 0 replies

Hi folks, I've been investigating the root cause for a critical issue affecting my CacheMyWork app (http://www.codeplex.com/CacheMyWork/ WorkItem/View.aspx?WorkItemId=2401). Ever since I received my (heavily-managed) corporate laptop at work, I've been unable to get Windows XP to launch all the entries in RunOnce that CacheMyWork adds. In fact, it's consistently been unable to launch more than 1-3 of the 5-10 entries that I'll typically populate with the tool. Here's what I know so far: - On other Windows XP and Windows Vista systems, the same version of CacheMyWork will result in RunOnce entries that all launch at next logon - on the failing system, the …

We are running Vmware Workstation 6.x.. I've installed an MSDN copy of XP on a virtual machine instance on our LAN. On my own machine, the same machine used for the creation of the VPC, i can create a linked clone of that original XP image from the lan without problem. No re-activation is needed etc. But, if i have someone else try to do a linked clone of the XP image from the LAN to their workstation (different hardware on the host), the guest linked clone complains that it needs re-activated, requiring us to call Microsoft and go through that long process for every linked clone we have to make outside of the machine it was made on originally. Is there a…

Problem Uninstalling Early Net versions & hotfixes
by Guest Silverfox1- 0 replies

My PC is a P4 2.4ghz IntelMB, 1gig ram, and was purchased in 2002. With ALL the problems associated with installing these latest security updates for the .net framework versions I simply uninstalled the Net 2.0 with no problem, re-installed it and was then able to update the latest security update for the 2.0 version. However I could NOT uninstall the hotfixes for the ver 1.1, etc. in reverse order from the add\remove list. After I re-installed the 2.0 I left it in and installed the Windows Installer Clean up utility and ran it and the ONLY net framework app depicted was the net 2.0 ! The 1.1 & 1.0 or there hotfixes are NOT even listed in the utility …
