Group Policy Windows Update with Wake on LAN
by Guest Scott- 0 replies

We have a new WSUS 2.0 implementation with settings defined within Group Policy--download and install for computers, download and notify for servers. Will the update process work if computers have BIOS and NIC support for Wake-on-LAN and are powered off and network adapters cabled to the network? Or does the update process depend upon all computers being powered on during the time of night when GP defines when updating occurs?

Re: recent security update breaks print spooler?
by Guest jojo1- 0 replies

Thanks Sally. You don't know how much your advice assisted me. It was spot on. In fact, I even uninstalled SP4 rollup after fixing up the printing issue and reinstalled it to prove that by deleting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\PostS PUpgrade) and then restarting the spooler, it alone solved the problem - and it did. Even though I spent countless hours trying to fix the problem before taking your advice, I was much relieved when your technique worked. thanks again -- jojo1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ jojo1's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=28202 View this thread: http://…

Tracking files

Hi Is there a good way to track files on a Windows filesystem?? I know that one can look at the Journal or hook into the events generated, but unfortunately many applications created a temporary file and when data is saved the original file is deleted and the temporary file is renamed to the original name. Regards, Søren

Defrag

I've just defragged a partition. This time I paid close attention and I see that some files are stranded in the outer reaches of the partition. In the old DOS days utilities like PCTools defragged but brought all the files to one end of the disk leaving the maximum unused space in one slab. Is there anythin in XP that does this? Colin

Restored Files Created as SIS Links
by Guest Will- 0 replies

This is a new one for me: on a Windows 2003 server, some files are being restored / migrated from another server. The files are being created by Windows Backup (in restore mode) as "SIS Links". There is some hidden folder in the root that apparently contains the actual files, and I guess the files on the NTFS file system are simply hard links to those files? What the heck is this SIS feature? I'm never experienced such a thing in using hundreds of W2K and W2K3 systems, doing many thousands of backups and restores. Is this a side effect of some option on the restore? In Windows itself, is there some registry option, or UI, that controls whether …

Search Protocol Host has stopped working

Recently I have been getting the error message "Microsoft Windows Search Protocol Host has stopped working" popping up every 10 seconds when Vista is building its search index. After indexing is complete, the messages disappear. In the event viewer, the corresponding application errors show up: Faulting application SearchProtocolHost.exe, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549b668, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bd80, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00045208, process id 0x16ec, application start time 0x01c7ce62a8eaadd8. Vista Laptop not being updated although updates exist
by Guest GeoffH- 0 replies

My Vista PC shows up in WSUS 3.0 and WSUS says it needs 18 updates. But "Windows Update" reports it is up to date. Checking WSUS by schedule or by forcing a WSUS check (clicking the "Check for updates") finds no updates. This is my first Vista machine so I have most likely missed something. Any ideas please.

photo gallery displays rotated images as vertical lines
by Guest lancelot59- 0 replies

Vista's photo gallery displays images that have been rotated by another program as vertical (or horizontal) lines (actually it shows a width of just a few pixels). Other programs (even Microsofts) display the images fine, only photo gallery seems to have a problem (mis-interpreted exif information?) Rotating one of these images within Photo Gallery, does not solve the problem, the veritcal line changes to a horizontal line for a few seconds, then changes back to a vertical line again. The only solution i've found so far is using another program to rotate them 90 degrees, then use photo gallery to rotate back to the desired angle. Anyone experiencing the s…
