I should first start off by saying, I'm still in the midst of testing, but here is what appears to be happing with our application installation process and subsequent update process(es) on Vista... We have and installation that we attempt to install as a Standard User with UAC enabled. We supply Admin credentials, and the installation appears to go through without incident. The installation writes stuff all over the board, but of particular interest or involvement in my current situation is an .ini file that holds version information and it created/updated in the installing users Application Data profile area. Like I said, all appears fine until we hit the…

My winxp install has a lot of missing Performance Monitor counters. I've tried doing lodctr /R:filename.ini, but that didn't help. Is there a WindowsXP specific article somewhere that helps resolve this issue?

I can't get WinXP to allow me to open a file using a selected application. I want to use Scintilla's Sc1.exe to open several of the files that used to be associated with it. for example Matlab script program trythis.m used to open with Sc1.exe, but now WinXP won't let me open it that way. I can still open the Sc1.exe application, then find the file and open the file. But why can't I simply double click like I used to? I went to tools options and deleted the .m tie. Now I must choose what application opens it, but... So I click to open the .m file and get the browse, find Sc1.exe, but nothing happens, it won't open WinXP thrusts me back into us…

It's a SATA 1 drive without SMART capability. Running the DIAG tool fails on the cable test (pass....). The drive shows no problems except for the detailed scan (one red blob) and the fact that NAV bombs with the BSD right at the end of phase 4. I's *like* to fix it but have got a new 500Gb Seagate today ready to do the deed..... I have an (old) machine which could adopt the drive if it were just a fixable glitch, but at the moment it doesn;t look fixable... Regards JJ

Sorry for 2nd post, but last one unanswered. Probably worded too complicated. I need to know, but can not track down info, what files/libraries are called by ANY program under win2k when the ''open file'' dialog box is used in any program. The main part is done within the opening program, but something is called to get back the drives available and the files on those drives. Please, can anyone help or provide any clues. Reason. There are two types of dialog opened by programs. Newer version, with ''back'' and ''create folder'' icons etc. (where you can edit file names). This version works for me. The second is an ''older'' type with just the …

I have a Windows 2003 Server that links together several computers in the network. The server is used as a domain controller and to store critical files for the computers connected to it. One of the applications is Wonderware and it opens screens that the users use to manage data being connected for production controllers. What happens is even if all the computers on the network are logged off certain files on the server can not be accessed for editing, and what is displayed is that a user has that file open. However, if the domain controller is unplugged from the network by physically unplugging the network cable. And then the file is renamed and saved, then i…

I am having a problem with some Photoshop CS2 documents, and I've narrowed the problem down to my Arial font. The Photoshop files work fine as long as I use any other font, but as soon as I try to change some text to the Arial (regular, non-narrow, non-bold, non-italic) font, I get an error message. The Adobe support forums suggest that the problem is due to a corrupted font and they suggest ways to narrow down which font it is. I've tried deleting the arial.ttf file in C:\Windows\Fonts, but Win XP Pro won't let me delete it. I've tried installing a new copy of the arial.ttf file, but it tells me that I must first delete the old copy before trying to delete a n…

Since I upgraded to WMP11, I can't manipulate any of my previously purchased, protected music. When I attempt to play, or move to a portable, or even rip from an audio disc it gives me an error message. The error message says that "Windows Media Player cannot play the protected file because a security upgrade is required. Do you want to download the security upgrade?" clicking on yes brings up another dialogue box "The file or device that you are trying to use requires a component of Windows Media Player to be upgraded". When I click "Upgrade" nothing seems to happen. I can find no reference to these security issues in any of the microsoft troubleshooting page…

A minor annoyance, but for some reason there are windows that won't close from the taskbar using the mouse right-click, then left-click on "close". Alt-F4 always works, and so does using the red X in the top right, but when I want to quickly close selected windows from the task bar, I often receive the "blunk" beep (it is not followed by an error message of any kind). There is not a detectable error going on, like a non-responding program. This seems to happen randomly and then I manually close the window with the "X". I've experienced it with Internet Explorer windows as well as Windows Desktop Search. It happens several times an hour so I thought I would s…

A recent power outage has resulted in the following problem for a client. All printers that are attached to PCs can print fine from the local PC, but when connecting to the terminal server, the printer shows up as the default printer for that session, but all print jobs fail to print. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printers. If I share the printer from the PC and then connect to it as a network printer (While in the terminal service session) I can print to it then. But no printing works through the terminal service session to the locally attached printer. Printing to other printers works fine. Retsrating the server has made no difference. Th…

My mother is using a basic MS usb mouse with the latest intellipoint drivers and the mouse locks up usually on the first boot every day. Then after rebooting the computer seems fine. I noticed that the usb hub and sata hard drive seem to be sharing IRQ 21. Do you think that could be the problem? Thanks-Joe

My friend's laptop has a really crazy keyboard issue. Essentially, a few keys will type two keys, one correct, another in close proximity; always the same pairs. For example: Q types Q and `, W types W and F1, P types P and -. Any external USB keyboard I plug in does not exhibit this problem. It is only with the built in keyboard. At first I thought it was a windows problem, but when I boot from CD into a preinstalled environment or DOS the problem is still there leading me to think it's a hardware issue. I have since replaced both the keyboard and the motherboard, but to no avail. I'm not sure what to do next... you'd think changing the keyboard, motherboard, an…

Help, My mouse quite working so I turned off the computer with the power button. On restarting all I get is the desktop wallpaper with no icons or menu bar. I can access task manager through ctl>alt>del, and can navigate to anything that was on my computer. (folders, programs, etc) However, when I try to run explorer.exe from task manager, the menu bar flashes up, and then disappears. I have tried to put the pc into safe mode with the same results. I have also tried to restart to last known good configuration with the same results. Can anyone suggest how to get my desk top back? Thank you.

Go to the advanced tab in internet options and uncheck "enable thirdparty browser extensions. Also clear all internet temp files. If still an issue, go to the manage addons in tools.
