Hi All, I have a problem with com ports and USB. I have some quad RS232 to USB converters, and I'd like XP to always allocate them fixed com port numbers, say 4 to 7, as they are used with other applications such as terminal emulators and chip programmers that have been pre-set to use those com ports. Is there a way of doing this, or is there a management program available that can be used to easily move com port allocations around? Thanks! Mark.

A dialog with the above message appeared on our Gateway Solo laptop yesterday after a "helpful" person at work assisted my wife in connecting the laptop to an LCD projector. A usable interface between the laptop and projector was never achieved - seemed to be a resolution issue as best I can understand. KB891387 states the issue is resolved by SP2 (which we had installed on the laptop prior to the above described incident). KB891387 offers a "hotfix" which I obtained from MS today, endeavored to run, and got a dialog that "Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying - there is no need to install…

I've got 5 computers networked on a server all work great except one of the computers (wireless-linksys-N series) that when you go and start the program it will open the program but the data fields sitting on the server are not there(can't see the server drive). If I first go to my computer and double click on the mapped drive where the data resides (y)on the server it comes up without problems. then I close the my computer and start the program and the data is now there..It seems that the server is sleeping but the other programs (word etc..) start fine. I've checked and have all settings on do not shutdown (only the monitor) any ideas? all other computers o…

I accidentally deleted the file I needed to answer. Anyway, I was complaining about not being able to download XP updates when notified by the yellow shield. I have it set to notify me and wait for my ok to download. The problem is that the files don't want to download from the yellow sheild prompt or from the Windows Update site. I tried to download them as a group and as individual files. It tells me that a file should download in 1 minute at my speed, but many minutes later there is no change in the download process. This same problem happened last month with downloads. I remember some workarounds, but did not make note of them because I thought …

Hello. I just setup KMS on a Windows 2003 Server. I deployed 26 machines, KMS activates clients and everything is fine, except for the fact that my machine and my co-worker's machine checks in with KMS 2 to 3 times per day. The kiosk machines only checked in once so far. I was under the impression that KMS clients only checked in every 7 days, so why is my machine requesting activation from KMS every day? My workstation is activated and is working fine, but I'm wondering if this is a problem or not. Thanks, Adam

In final preparation for copying back all my data from my backup drive, I have one final question before I proceed: I have my backup data and programs of my external USB drive. My current working copy of Vista has some recent files on it I have a secondary backup of what was my original Vista drive in the directory Vista nicely saved for me in "Windows.old". Now what I what to do before I copy my backup partition over my current working partition is to first copy files onto my backup partition from Windows.old that are newer than that which is there, then copy all files that are newer from my working partition, and then I can comfortably copy my "enhanced" backup par…

Just had this same problem as you guys on windows server 2003. Tried all your suggestions, apart from one, but prob a language issue as some of one response included garbled text on my pc, anyway... here's how i got round the issue and got ntbackup chugging along again.... in the shadow copy settings of the c drive, even the though c drive (systemroot) wasn't using shadow copies for previous versions, i changed the settings so it would save shadow copies to a different drive other than itself. Then having checked it was working ok with backup again, changed it the shadow copy settings of the volume back to the drive itself. NTBackup is backing-up now as i…

We installed an upgrade to our XP, from a CD Rom. After installing the upgrade, when we try to run out software app, we get an "access denied user does not have permission to run this program. Please contact the network administrator." error message. If we select a file in the program folder, right click it and choose the security, some of the users have the read\readwrite boxes checked, but they are grayed out. We cannot check or uncheck any of the boxes. What would cause this? TIA
