I'm looking into purchasing Windows 2003 Server R2 Retail version. I've seen plenty of sites selling the 5 or 20-pack User CALs OEM version for a bit less than the Retail version of the CALs. Is there any conflict with using OEM CALs on a Retail version of the server OS, or should this be fine? Thanks! --Jason

Hello all, I ran in to a problem that Windows automatic update kicks on with the yellow shield at the taskbar during regular business hours. It tremendously slowed down our network. To the point where websites are timing out. I placed a call with Microsoft yesterday asking them what IP addresses Windows Automatic Update uses and heres the list that they gave us: • http://download.windowsupdate.com • https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com • http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com • http://*.update.microsoft.com • http://*.download.windowsupdate.com • http://update.microsoft.com • http://*.windowsupdate.co…

From time to time, we have some users loses profiles, and have to re-create or restore from the backup tape, especially it happens when multiple users log in one computer, or one user log in multiple computers. So just wondering what the best way to manage the user profiles? Our environment: Server: Windows 2000 server SP4 Workstation: Windows 2000 SP4 with UPHClean installed. thanks

Hello, I have an issue where I can not search a specfic portion of a network drive. I can access the subdirectories and files within but if I perform a search the search fails to find folders or files that I know exist. I verified that knowelse has this issue. I have had someone else login to my machine with thier username/password and they also can not perform the search. Any thoughts? Thanks, Todd

Hi For some time now (a couple of months) one of my PCs has been intermittently losing it's ability to resolve DNS names. I have 3 other machines on the same network all configured to use my wireless router as primary DNS server and they are working faultlessly so I'm (reasonably) confident it is an issue with the PC and not my router or ISP. I can work around the problem by restarting the DNS Client Service and the inconvenience is not enough to merit a rebuild just now but I would like to try and understand what is causing the problem in the first place. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what might be wrong or steps I could take to try and narrow it dow…

Hi recently I've been getting a BSOD after resuming from sleep mode on Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I cannot actually see the message as it happens before the logon screen comes up. But I can tell that the system crashes as I open the crash dump file in WinDbg: BugCheck 7A, {c044b570, c000009d, 31f4f860, 896ae2f4} KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR Later in the debug file, it mentions the error code: ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc000009d - STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED It does not always happen. Sometimes the system resumes quickly with no problems. Is anyone else having this problem?

Thank you Jay. Have been looking for an answer to this problem for some months. It does appear that the laser mice are extra sensitive. Using the grip side of the mouse mat worked for me too. -- billy "Jay" wrote: > are u using a optical mouse (laser mouse) > > if so, i had same problem......had to use a different mousepad. all i did > was flip my current mouse pad upside down, so the grip was on top. > > > thanks, > james jones > > > > "cruellaplc" <cruellaplc@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:361DB182-65EB-41E6-B21F-293DB9F36735@microsoft.com... > > My cursor keeps …

BusinessWeek Online - Technology is a great boon, except when it's not. Every working person has had at least one experience where technology let him down in a big way -- whether it's the inexplicably dead cell phone during a crucial call, or the "blue screen of death" in the middle of a presentation. I'm not advocating for a return to carbon paper and Wite-Out, but it's fair to say that at times our dependence on technology can create as many problems as it solves. Link To Original Article

I really, really don't understand this. I understand that Microsoft has a history of aggression against open source, as Chris DiBona wrote recently on the Open Source Initiative's (OSI) license-discuss email list. I compete with Microsoft and have for many years. I get that Microsoft has been bad. But discrimination is explicitly against the OSI's Open Source Definition, as Bill Hilf noted in responding to criticism from Google's Chris DiBona on the email thread: ... Link To Original Article

Bayarsaikhan has posted the top 25 most active open-source projects on Microsoft's Codeplex site. Looking at the list, it looks like Microsoft developers spend their time doing much the same as the rest of the Java/other world: play games and make the web world pretty with AJAX. You can see the top project interests below in the Codeplex tag cloud. Codeplex is interesting to me for several reasons, but primarily because it demonstrates something that I've argued for many years now: open source on the Windows platform is a huge opportunity for Microsoft. It is something for the company to embrace, not despise. And it does several things well (better than Sou…
