I'm admin on a single domain with 100 XP clients and I've been getting a new error when trying to run windows update on individual clients. One year I had used WSUS for 2 months, but it failed on me and I haven't wanted to try it again. So I run updates manually on individual PCs. anyhow the error occurs like this: I attempt to run windows update: I get to the Keep your computer up to date, Check to see if you need updates for Windows, your hardware or your devices. I click custom. 1st message I get is 0x8DDD0018 The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running: • Automatic Updates (allows the site to find…

One of the clients at my site has an error where the active window will not come to the foreground, he has a number of apps open including a citrix window. I've tried deleting his profile, checked his mouse settings for any mouse activated options, the other 400+ PC's onsite don't have the problem. He has the standard OE. It seems to resolve itself after 5 - 10 minutes.

Hello all, Is it possible to change a computer's SID without restarting? More specifically... What I'm trying to do is this. I'm trying to come up with a way to do a bare metal restore on Windows. I've written a program that saves the all of the file metadata (attribs, sacls, dacls, mod time, etc) for all the files in the filesystem to a single file which is backed up to another computer. Basically this is like running SetACL or FileACL recursively and telling it to dump all the information to a file and then copying this file elsewhere. The problem I'm having is on restoration. I'm booting up a BartPE boot disk, copying the files back and then applyin…

Supposedly Vista compatible, but apparently some issues with Logitech webcam drivers, which this Dell XPS 1210 is equipped with. Any one experienced this? (I've garnered enough not to accept the default install) Can't tell you how much I loath/hate to do it, but I would love to see my new grandson in England on webcam, and it's the only software my daughter has on her laptop. While it's a noble cause, save me from myself ... if you can. -- http://www.e-woodshop.net Last update: 8/08/07 KarlC@ (the obvious)

I like to do a full backup once a week and usually don't want to bother with incremental backups. Yet when I click on Backup Files in the Backup and Restore Center, it seems to only do a incremental backup no matter what your 'Settings' are. The only way I see to ever do a full backup is to go through this whole rigamarole and check 'Create a new, full backup now in addition to saving settings' and do that each time. What am I missing? I don't see anyplace to select whether you want a full backup or an incremental backup.

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 531 with the Vista Operating System. Prior to this purchase, I was running an old Dell PC with a Wireless Router connected (LikySys). My wife uses a Mac Notebook, which she was able to connect to the internet via the wireless router. Since hooking up my new Dell with Vista, my wife is unable to connect to the internet on her Notebook. In addition, when she tries to connect, it will not only NOT allow her access, it will kick the hard connected Dell off the internet as well. The only way to re-connect to the internet with the Dell is to restart, and turn off and on the wireless router as well as the modem. I have c…

I have a scheduled task which failed to start. I had this same task on my XP system. It's just a text file that pops up and reminds me of bills once a month. Quite often my system is not on at the set time but I would have it set to try the next time it could and that worked in XP. In Vista I have it as a one time event (I reschedule it for the next month). I have checked "Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed" and "If the task fails restart every 5 minutes" up 999 times. Nothing else I can see that should get in the way. I do not have it set to only run if on AC for instance or other limitations. But it didn't start. Nothing in the Knowl…

I have a Gateway GM 5260 dual core intel 6300, upgraded to 4gigs ram. I'm running a dual monitor setup (22 inch Gateway and 19 inch Viewsonic both running at native resolution). When I try to run Vista media center, it drops frames like crazy, so much as to be unusable. I've tried running it on either monitor with the same results, along with the annoyance of having the mouse locked on whatever monitor it is running on. I've streamlined my startup as much as possible so I'm baffled. This computer has plenty of power and should breeze through media center. Is the dual monitor overtaxing the anemic LE 7300 video card that comes with this gateway? Any suggest…

Windows Vista home basic runs on a compaq. Installing windows update files: KB936782, KB936021, KB933579, KB937143, fails. A new check finds the same update files. The history shows the 80070003 error. I followed the procedure for this error described in the troubleshooter, but it does not help. Does any have a suggestion??

Hi Everyone, I have implemented sending message via virtual channel to terminal service server app in C#. However, due to the project requirement, I need to re-write this in VB6. However I am having issues with MsRdpClient31.CreateVirtualChannels and MsRdpClient31.SendOnVirtualChannel methods. I received Method 'CreateVirtualChannels' of object 'MsRdpClient31' failed and Method 'SendOnVirtualChannel' of object 'MsRdpClient31' failed errors. If I put in 'On Error Resume Next' statement before the the methods calls, it would skip the first SendOnVirtualChannel call as it would error out, and create the virtual channel even though generate error, an…

When we disable the Microsoft windows firewall the problem disappears. Have there been reports of difficulties with this set of updates? Thanks! -- brian

I have set up Offline Files on a Desktop & Laptop. Everything works & Sync fine. The only exception, is when a New Folder is created (on Desktop), as a Child of a Shared, Sync'd Parent Folder. The new folder is not sync'd. When the laptop is connected to the network, I can see them, open them whatever. I can manually (right click-Make Available Offline) set them and sync, but I need this to happen automatically. Any ideas?

Is there a utility that will export for me a list of all the folders and files my client has chosen to "Make available offline"? When a new profile needs to be created from scratch, I must again make available these offline folder and files. What I have been doing is mapping the root of the offline folder, going offline and from a command prompt exporting a dir /s to a log file; very time consuming. Anyone have a more time efficient manner of doing this? Thanks, -- Ken

Hi, Has anyone tried WinuxPC's Vista XP? It is a cosmetic XP app that gives XP the look of Vista. It includes Vista-like aero-glass and icons. It also includes a firewall and anti-virus. It is tempting because I do like the aesthetics of Vista. Cost is $31.98 (including shipping) on e-bay. Thanks, Gary
