I'm using Vista, but, a lot of the employees in my department are still using XP. Sometimes a user will log in and they'll notice that they've lost their desktop icons, and, they've lost all their IE favorites. If I look into their Documents and Settings folder, I'll see a new profile created. Originally their profile was named with their username plus a dot, then the name of the domain. For example: "pb4072.intdom." That's my profile folder name. Now, sometimes, a user logs in and suddenly, they have a new profile. So, in the example I gave above, instead of "pb4072.intdom," it's just "pb4072" as the name of the profile. This is incredible, and frustratin…

I've been plagued by an "System Error: lsass.exe : Object Name Not Found" message that causes my computer (WinXP Home Edition SP2) to restart in an endless loop (3 times in 2 weeks!) and the only solution is to format the drive and reinstall. I have just done that but am paranoid the machine will recieve the error on the next restart. Heres the backstory: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support&tid=49ee0155-3c50-4d67-93aa-b737346dbedd&cat=en-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1 A user suggested this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883268 …

So how can i turn my flash drive back to normal? Thanks.

Here is a strange problem: First i've thought that it was because of Win2k's crappy drivers, then upgraded to XP SP2 Pro but the same problem, if i connect flash drive with my SD card reader (USB), the flash drive will not be recognized any longer. But if i run it alone or other USB devices like USB gamepad or 2 USB flash drive, it works OK. I also tried different ports with no help, the other USB devices or this USB devices works well with another system when connected together. I've checked system info with no conflict, only there are some IRQ sharings which haven't been problem since i plug card reader with flash drive at the same time. What should i do?…

I open some applications in XP and move the application windows as I like them and some parts of the windows are outside the screen. If the screen is locked/unlocked (password required to have access to the computer again after the screensaver has been activated) the windows with some parts outside the screen is automatically resized so all parts of these window are within the screen. In my case I have two screens and resize/locate an application over both of the screens. But every time the screen is locked/unlocked the application window will resized and fit only to one of the screens. So I have to resize it again. And as I have requirement from the company t…

I was getting the message: The Windows Installer Service Could not be Accessed. This can occur if you are in safe mode of if the windows installer is not properly installed. I went to the following KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315346 I found 2 msiexec.exe file one in windows system32 and one in SP2. I followed step 2 and went to regedit and changed the location to be the SP2 location (the previous location looked like (((Value/// My Doc's))) Then I brought up safe mode hitting F8 and proceeded with step 3. but when I tried to run misexec /regserver. It said it could not be found. I tried restarting the computer again but when I hit F…

All, I was messing around with an old document scanner (really old, like 1999 old) and needed to download some windows 98 dll files and throw them in my XP system directory. That's the only significant change I made to my system. Long story short, my audio device disappeared completely from the sounds and audio devices properties dialog. The device shows up on my machine. It isn't a hardware issue, I've tried switch to onboard sound and moving my PCI sound card to a different slot. It isn't a driver issue. You'll just have to take my word for it, I won't bore myself and you with the details of my troubleshooting methods. Dxdiag gives me: Error: Pr…

Anyone know of an online reference that might point me in the right direction, or even just post your own "top 10 list" here.
