is there a way that i can make windows XP automatically reactivate a disk rather than i have to go into the disk management and do it manualy. i mean windows can detect the connection of the disk so it would be nice if it could also reactivate it.

  11. The unfortunate thing about writing all your thoughts down in a blog is that it makes it very clear just how wrong I can be sometimes. My "code" is online, for everyone to see, analyze, and critique. And critique you do. :-) A case in point is my fulminations earlier today on XenSource and its alleged abandonment of the Xen project. John Vigeant, a friend from my Novell days and XenSource's director of Business Development, kindly swatted me in an email for errors in my post. Witness my sackcloth and ashes (with John's permission - he must have some perverse pleasure in seeing me don this hairshirt :-): ... Link To Original Article

  13. Wow. Double wow. I haven't seen Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols this worked up since, well, ever. He could almost be writing for The Register with the way he smacks around Microsoft for its top-25 (most active, mind you) open-source projects on CodePlex. It makes for very fun reading. It doesn't, however, accurately portray the projects--there are some that actually sound useful and interesting--but I don't want a little (just a little, mind you) accuracy get in the way of a good ol' cage match between Microsoft and SJVN. My favorite (and probably most apt) comment: ... Link To Original Article

As Mary Jo Foley reports, Microsoft has pulled down its "Get the [wrong] Facts" website and replaced it with a "Compare" website. Consider this the kinder, gentler version of getting the "facts." Unless, of course, you're Red Hat. The site doesn't talk about Novell or other Linux distributions. But it spares no criticism of Red Hat, the one vendor that hasn't bowed down to savor its toejam. ... Link To Original Article

All the duplicate file finder tools I have seen so far allow only to find dupes within the same directory tree or even partition. What I need is a dupes file finder which finds only those dupes which have a twin/copy in one file set (e.g. the recursive directory tree D:\newfiles\*.*) and the other twin/copy in another, different recursive directory tree (e.g. D:\proj\*.*). Dupes within the same directory are of no interest. Does someone know such a "special" dupe file finder ? Frank

Hi all, I would like to know how I could install the FTP service and have it work without using the Windows Component Wizard. I did come close, I had the FTP service to show and I was able to run ftp in console but I couldn't start the FTP service. Anyone know some kind of guide or maybe (but I would be surprise) a installer to install the FTP service. Thanks,

I'm using Vista, but, a lot of the employees in my department are still using XP. Sometimes a user will log in and they'll notice that they've lost their desktop icons, and, they've lost all their IE favorites. If I look into their Documents and Settings folder, I'll see a new profile created. Originally their profile was named with their username plus a dot, then the name of the domain. For example: "pb4072.intdom." That's my profile folder name. Now, sometimes, a user logs in and suddenly, they have a new profile. So, in the example I gave above, instead of "pb4072.intdom," it's just "pb4072" as the name of the profile. This is incredible, and frustrating. I hav…
