Vista Ultimate does not kill a process
by Guest Louis Li- 0 replies

I'm using Vista Business in my Fujitsu laptop, I ran DBxpress to recover my old outlook express mailboxes. For some problem, the application stopped responding for a long time, and I decided to terminate the process. I can't seem to use "end process" and "end task" to kill the non-responding application, while in XP, I can kill them easily. I pressed the power button to shut it down and hope it can kill the process, then computer then stays on the "shutting down" screen with the rotating donut, now it's almost 45 minutes since then and the donut is still rotating but nothing seems done. I'm going to manually power it down and hope nothing was lost. Is the…

ActiveSync works but having trouble pulling Calendar items up to P
by Guest IhateTroubleshooting- 0 replies

After seeing all the post of people having a heck of a time with Active Sync and Vista, I'm feeling happy with 90% of what does work for me. However, please help me figure out why my PDA calendar items won't upload into my Vista PC's outlook app. Currenly all my contacts came in, Tasks came in, Emails fine, and I can enter a calendar item on my Vista PC and it will sync down to the PDA. But again NOTHING in the PDA calendar will go up to the PC? Additionally I have had this same PDA synching well with a WIN2k Laptop and I'm wondering if that might be the issue - that the old laptop is somehow the "master" and the new Vista PC is subordinate or someth…

Update ODBC driver for existing DSN
by Guest Rabbit- 0 replies

Hello everyone, I have a middle-tier server which has quite a lot of ODBC-DSN entires, connecting to all our R&D databases. My problem is that the ODBC Administrator does not provide an option to change/update the actual ODBC driver for a connection. After upgrading, e.g. Oracle 9 to 10 i need to change all existing DSN setting to use the 10g Driver. How do i do this without removing all and re-entering? I tried changing it through the registry, but apperently this doesn't work as well as i thought. Thanks

full-screen programs automatically minimizing
by Guest Josh- 0 replies

Hi, I am running Home Basic 32-bit. Whenever I run a full-screen game or other program, for the first time after my pc is turned on, the program automatically minimizes while at the black screen with the windows circle loading icon (just before the game screen appears). Once this has happened though, it does not happen again with any other full-screen program until the computer is restarted. Several other people running the same OS experience this problem. Any insights on how to fix it or report the bug to Microsoft with paying to do so?

Windows 2003 SP2-Very Slow to install in Domain Controller
by Guest sa-kintoh!- 0 replies

Hi, I have one DC and 3 member servers. I have applied service pack 2 on the three member servers and finished in less than 20 minutes. However, when I did on the Domain Controller last August 11 the installation still is for more than 24 hours. I have stopped and reverted to the old settings and did it again yesterday, August 13th. Three times it prompted me that it was not able to backup cpu.inf, xpob2k3.dll and dxdiagn.dll. After 24hours of running, it prompted me that it was not able to find adminpak.msi. Even though, I've pointed it in the right direction, it was still not able to find it. I've tried a series of retries and it push through and to date, …

LAN failure coming out of standby
by Guest arnieb- 0 replies

I've read some of the postings about this failure mode. This just recently started to happen intermittently, now it is pretty reproducible. If I put my computer 9 ( XP with the latest updates ) in Standby mode the LAN will not be functioning when I restore operation. I have to turn it off, unplug the power cord and wait 5 minutes before I can reboot it and have LAN. I saw someone posting about a bad battery. My motherboard is about 3 years old, so the battery could need replacement, but its hard to see why this would have an effect. The battery seems to be working. Any ideas would be helpful. Arnie

Windows Update Wont Update!
by Guest Skip R- 0 replies

Maybe someone can help??? Windows update simply won't update under Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit. (Either automatically or manually.) When I click on 'check for updates for your computer' to manually check for updates, I receive an error message saying... WINDOWS COULD NOT SEARCH FOR NEW UPDATES Error(s) found: Code 800B0100 Get Help I click on 'get help' and error code 800B0100 is NOT listed. I have 'googled' the error code and have found some others with the same problem, but none had yet gotten results. So, I really don't expect to either, but I thought I would at least try. VERY frustrating.

Can't drag and drop desktop icons
by Guest Jerry- 0 replies
For some reason I am having a lot of difficult moving icons on my desktop. For example, if I wish to drag a shortcut into a folder on my desktop. I drag and I get the right arrow but when I drop it on the folder either nothing happens or I get an error message saying "The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program. Close the file and try again." Meanwhile the file is not open. I noticed that I already have an identical shortcut in the folder but instead of just asking to overwrite the existing nothing happens. Then if I try to delete the shortcut from my desktop I also get a file in use error message. Anyone encounter this?

Windows Media Player automatically starting after resume from slee
by Guest Sean Anderson- 0 replies

Windows media player is starting for me after resuming from sleep. The application does not appear, it does appear in the task list running as the logged in user. The problem is that if I then start a media file (say a movie) the sound plays, but I don't get the user interface. If I kill the task, and open the media file again, it operates as normal. There is something that is starting the wmplayer.exe process. I thought it might be the task scheduler starting it via hotstart so I disabled that task scheduler item. It didn't work. I run a self-built desktop pc (asus motherboard, nvidia 8800gts graphics card, core2duo processor, 2gig ram)

Office 2003 SP2 + Server 2003 + Server 2003 SP2 = Freeze?
by Guest thatotherguy- 0 replies

Hey all, Ive got a Terminal Server running Windows Server 2003 with Office 2003 SP2 running happy as larry, but a couple of months ago, I thought Id throw the SP2 for Server 2003 at it because, you know, Service Packs are supposed to be good things. A couple of days later, the server had it's first ever freeze. All user accounts started locking up (not all at the same time, sort of like dominos falling over) and while the server would still accept incoming RDP connections, it would freeze immediately after login, so we had to restarted the server (which is a pain becuase it's hosted off site). Being it's first ever crash, I didnt think much of it, the Event …

Locked files on a network
by Guest Terry- 0 replies

At school we have a Novell network. All our PC files were moved from the HDD to the server. I've had problems with some of the files since then. First: the file icons have a circular arrow pattern on the lower left corner. I can't find any reference to that kind of icon pattern. Second: some of the files open with a warning that they are being edited by "ME" and ask if I want to open a read only copy. If I open it and save it as a different filename, it may or may not open normally again. Today I copied one offending file to the HDD and the icon was normal and it opened normally. I discussed this with my IT and am considering copying all files back to…
