I thought I'd look into the issue with my USB devices again tonight after I realised that it wasn't just my USB stick that didn't work, it was my phone too. I think the problem was with any USB device that wasn't attached when I installed Vista, maybe, maybe not. Anyway, I discovered that if you copy a version of 'usbstor.inf' that you will find in a sub-dir on your C:\ drive to C:\WINDOWS\INF, then delete any unrecognised devices then re-scan it finally resolved the issue. Took AGES when searching for software at this screen but fixed in the end:

I tried that several times. I think the key thing to do is after you tell the computer to always show the volume control icon, hit apply then ok. After that is completed, restart your computer. If the problem isn't fixed, go into your control panel and sounds and see if you can find a place where it asks if you want the icon on the taskbar. Worked for me. Before I had done the properties thing, I had tried the sounds thing. I had no options. So, I'm really thinking that the taskbar properties is the first place you should turn to.

Hi, Anyone know if it's possible to reset disconnected sessions conditional on whether a particular process is running in that session? For example IF the session is disconnected AND process THUNDERBIRD.EXE is not running THEN reset the session. TIA

Hi, I'm having a hellish problem with EFS. I apologize for the long post but if anyone can help me, you will truly be doing a kind deed. I have two computers: a laptop running Vista Ultimate and a home server running 2000 Server. Some time ago, I encrypted some files on my laptop using EFS (I was concerned the files would be accessible if my laptop was lost or stolen). I also exported a password-protected encryption key to a ".pfx" file using the certificate export wizard in Vista. I believe, but I am not absolutely certain, that I included the private key. (My understanding is that the password is to protect the private key.) I then emailed …

What I'm looking for is a reliable way to detect the presence of macros in Word 6/7/97/2000/2003 documents. Would help if this could be done for Excel workbooks too, but not essential. I don't need to know what macro names, or what code they contain, just if macros are present, true or false. That way I can code a (hopefully small) executable to detect them. This is to implement a mailserver policy for a distribution-list that needs to send Word documents, to ensure no macro-based malware gets through. Does anyone know of any relevant Technet articles or code examples?

When we perform overlapped I/O on the LPT1 device on a computer with a Generic/Text only printer driver installed on LPT1, characters sent to a non-plug-and-play printer attached to that port appear to be getting dropped intermittently. The problem appears to go away if we go into Device Manager and change the "Filter Resource Method" setting on the printer port to "Use any interrupt assigned to the port", but only until the next reboot. After a reboot, if we switch the Filter Resource Method setting back to "Never use an interrupt" then switch it again to "Use any interrupt assigned to the port", we don't lose characters - again until a reboot. If w…

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and like other people my screen saver stopped working. I tried to do the Windows Update but when I do, I get a pop-up saying that I need to go to Control Panel - Windows Update. When I do that, it says that my system is up to date. I've checked out the Power Options and its set to "allow the computer to sleep". I do not have a mouse. I use the pointing device on the laptop. Any suggestions as to what else I can try? Its very irratating that the screen saver doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

When trying to print from a particular secure web site, users with IE6 get an error and IE shuts down. Users with IE7 and Mozilla can print from this site without issue. The users with IE6 cannot be upgraded to IE7 because they use applications that are not ready for it yet. When I click on details, the ModName references mshtml.dll. I have tried to re-register this file, but it doesn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All, I would like to manually kick off a backup or sync of the Bitlocker Recovery Key to the Active Directory. Everything is in place in the A.D and it is working in the scenario when Bitlocker is configure and already on the domain. I am trying to setup up bitlocker prior to the Domain Join and then report it up. Enabling the Policies does not automatically do it, and having it enabled and then joining does not auto backup as well. Does anyone have the exact language. I have been all over the Manage-bde. Thanks
