My available memory is down to very little, yet my PF Usage is 8 gigabytes (about how much memory is on the box), sql server keeps having memory issues yet the sqlservr.exe is using hardly any memory.. how to fix this? is there some way to limit how much memory can be used by this PF Usage? why is PF Usage using all my memory so that sql server cant use hardly any?

Hello, I have noticed with some Windows Server 2003 servers I manage that after rebooting via an RDP session after applying Windows updates that everything wil come back up except for the RDP service itself. I can ping the server, connect to any shares it may have, use mail services (if Exchange), etc. I have this happen with both SP1 and SP2 machines, so it doesn't seem to be a service pack issue. Nothing in the Event Logs indicate what the cause may be. A subsequent reboot always resolves the issue (I usually either have to go there and reboot by logging in on the console, or if I have access to another machine on the network, I am usually able to issue…

have fax software (Ventafax) which is giving an error message "Modem occupied by another application". It would seem that something is scanning the modem every 20 seconds. In normal operation it's possible to hear (via the telephone) the modem dialling out but nothing is heard. I'm not aware of any changes that should have this effect. How do I find out what software may be causing this? I can't see anything obvious either in the Services or StartUp of System Configuration Utility. Thanks. Bill Ridgeway

I had the same problem. I have a workaround if System Restore fails to correct this. For me, It even occured in Safe Mode. 1. Make your way to starting Internet Explorer 2. on the address bar type:"control panel" 3. go to User Accounts...-> Add User account-> Create New "Admininstrator" Account. 4. Shut down manually if you have to and reboot and access the new Admin account You will now have new account with all original programs still installed and access to old files via either: a. Internet exporer-> Address bar-> type: C:\users\ your old user account name b Start button-> computer-> C:\Users\ you old user account name. * You'll find…

I am having problems recording: custom-built desktop with Intel DG965WH (version AAD41692-308; BIOS MQ96510J.86A.1987.2007.0258), 4GB RAM, WinXP Pro, SP2, fully patched. System tab in Control Panel shows 3.24 GB installed. When I ran Sound Recorder and pressed the stop key after 5 seconds or so of (attempted) recording, I got a message I have not seen before with that program, "Not enough memory to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again.". Task Manager reports a "Commit Charge of 312M of memory, out of 5201M. The programs running are Skype 3.5 and Snagit 7, as well as a driver for a VoIPphone r…

Hi, I help maintain several computers that are "locked down" and cannot be changed at all because they are publicly accessible. Therefore, Automatic Updates is turned off because the changes wouldn't be permanent, anyway. From time to time, we unlock the machines and manually perform updates via the Windows Update Web site. I know a little Visual Basic.NET, and I was just wondering if there was some program or service within Windows that I could call upon to have the updates start immediately. If I knew what program/service to call, I could create a simple Visual Basic program that each computer would have, and my program could call this updatin…

I'm attempting to do a direct connection to someone for a multiplayer game in Civ 4. And for the life of me, we can't getthe connection. He's connected to other people with his computer before, and had others connect to him. And I am the only one of our circle of friends running Vista. So the problem must lie on my end. Does anyone know what could be going on here? I tried adding Civ4 and it's files to the "exceptions" list on the fire wall, I even turned the firewall off thinking that was the problem. And nada. Thanks for anyhelp you can give.

I have a 1 year old Computer running Windows XP SP2 and I have had no problems until I purchased a Powered 4 port Hi Speed USB Hub, but although XP recognises and instals the new device it cannot find any software for "USB2 Hub Controller". There were no drivers supplied as it uses those on XP.

I have a program called EXPERTool that I want to run at startup in Windows Vista Home Premium. I am the only user and there is only one account and that is mine as administrator. I have tried to setup the executable for expertool in the task schdule. No matter what I do windows UAC blocks the program at startup. Why is there a task scheduler in administrative tools when it is so difficult to run the task with UAC? The program is located here: http://www.gainward.com/support/XPRT_50.zip Can anyone advise me on this and better yet tell me why it is so difficult to setup for a home user?

It was my understanding that when Automatic Updater downloads files and puts them in this folder (\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads) that the files would automatically delete after 10 days. I just had some disk space issues and found that there were files in the folder going back as far as a year. I went ahead and deleted them, but is there some setting I need to get these to delete automatically? Thanks, Charlotte

Hello, One of our remote offices began complaining of slow network file access of Excel files on their file server/DC which was a Win2k3 sp1 R1 server. Certain Excel files (almost all have links to other Excel files on the same server) would take 60 seconds to 2-4 minutes to open, before prompting to update the data w/in the files. Prior to this it would take 15 seconds or less to open the same files. We were unable to find anything wrong with the server through the event viewer, net/dcdiag, etc. After a great deal of pressure from this office we replaced the server with a newer Win2k3 sp2 R2 server and migrated the data to the new server. The slow access…

Hi all, Looking at allowing non-admins to format their WD Passport 2.5" USB drives. These are domain users, using a GP that has the "Devices: Allowed to format and eject removable media" set to "Administrators and Interactive Users" already (I have done everything I know of to ensure this setting is ACTUALLY applied - even gone so far as to disable the GP, and hard-coded the registry key to allow 'interactive users' the ability to format removable drives). I cannot get anyone but a DOMAIN ADMIN to format the USB drive. This is on HP D7700's. My only thought currently, is that the USB drive may not be recognized as removable? It does show up in the "safely …

I am attempting to map network printers for all TS users through the login scripts. The printers are installed on a print server with Server 2003x64 as the OS. My Terminal Servers are also Server 2003x64. The command I am using is: "rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /in \\printerserver\printer" When I run the command, I get the following message: "Operation could not be completed. Either the printer name was type incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server." I am able to connect to the printers through various other methods and so I know the server name and printer names are correct. What am I missing?
