I'd be really grateful for some help please. I'm a newbie!! I have a Dell Latitude laptop running Windows XP Pro. The Security event log on this machine has hundreds of 'Success Audit' type entries. They are mainly events 528, 538, and 576 (Logon/Logoff, Privilege Use etc). When I say hundreds, I mean there appears to be an average of about 4 per minute under normal use. Whenever I have looked at the Security event log on other machines, 9 times out of 10 there's only one 'Success Audit' type entry there. I have looked at Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Local Security Policy --> Local Policies --> Audit Policies on the laptop. Ever…

I am running Vista x64 (Ultimate) and am using Acronis TrueImage for backups. Acronis has a built-in task scheduler, but unfortunately it doesn't provide an option to wake up from sleep. I had contacted their tech support about it and they showed me how I could run the task from the Windows Task Scheduler, which was great. However, a strange thing happens. If the computer has to wake up from sleep to run the backup, it seems to wake up, and then immediately go back to sleep. When I turn on (wake up) the PC the next morning, I find that Acronis TrueImage has just started to run. It leads me to believe that the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Acronis\…

I'm trying to learn when to use the various tools within windows xp for boot or HD issue. Assume I've done a reboot, booting into safe mode/reboot and updates are current, with no new apps or hardware have still not resolved a generic boot issue. In what order should i use the following tools and what would be a typical symtom to indicate the tool vs another tool? 1. Last known good config. 2. Last Restore point? Does i386 need to be local. 3. System File Checker (SFC)? Does i386 need to be local. 4. Check Disk. 5. fixboot cli only. 6. fixmbr cli only

I have Windows Business at work and Home Premium at home. At home when I right click on the desktop and choose Properties and open the Window Color and Appearance, I am able to get the taskbar, start menu, and window borders to change colors. Let me say that all three have an obvious color change...the taskbar isn't darker than the start menu and window color. On Vista Business, if I go through the same procedure the start menu and window colors change. The task bar does not. I have changed the color intensity to see if I can see any change in color in the taskbar. The color just does not change. Is there a way to get the taskbar to change color i…

I want to to use Group Policies to control the Dissapproved sites under content advisor but I cannot get it to work. I have manually turned on content advisor on all my workstations, imported the sites into the policy for those users from a workstation and forced the policy using gpupdate /force on the workstation....but it doesn't seem to work...what am I doing wrong? or is there a problem with it? Is there a setting second setting that needs to be turned on?

I have a question. Assume I have a server that contains a folder with a domain account that allows read/execute/create privilages and NOT modify. Now, a user in that domain creates a file in the folder and, as the owner, has full privlages... will that user be able to modify the file?

By accident, I set a network folder to sync by right clicking and inadvertantly selecting "sync." I've disabled the sync by reversing the process, but now I have the Sync Center tool sitting in my system tray and I can't get it out. Any suggestions?

All, I have a scheduled task that runs a remote applet (i.e. connect and downloads applet via IE browser). If I run the Scheduled Task when interactively logged in - it works fine. When I let the scheduler run the task (i.e. not logged in) - the scheduled tasks runs and completes but the applet stops (i.e. basic: Stopping applet... => as seen in JRE logs). Has anyone seen this before? Haven't had any luck with coming up with a fix yet. Regards, Patrick

I have 4 servers running Windows 2000 SP4 with Citrix. The Windows drive is W: and there is no physical C: drive as that maps to users home directory. When running NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86 from either Automatic Updates, WSUS, or manually I get SL9E.tmp has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. The file name changes but is always a .tmp. If I extract the MSP, I can apply the MSP just fine. But I need to figure out what's wrong and fix the core problem. There are other patches having issues. I turned on in the HKLM/...Windows/Currentversion/setup/debug to ffff but the logs don't really seem to indicate anything. …
