I found this thread through a Google search while trying to find a solution myself to this Windows Update error. Even though this thread is old, I thought I'd post what worked for me for others who run across this error. Reading the solutions here and in the MS Knowledgebase didn't sound like they would fit our scenario, so I tried simply removing Microsoft Updates and returning to Windows Updates. You can do this at the Microsoft Updates page under Change Settings. Then run all the Windows Updates alone then return the configuration to perform Microsoft Updates. This simple solution has fixed several mysterious Win Upd problems I've had on various machines …

Hi, I am a new user to WMM and am scanning slides to jpegs for inclusion into a slide show. I have successfully made a slide show from these jpegs, but I wanted the images to retain the file name in the slide show, which they are not. Is there a setting to be made in WMM, which would show the file name or is there another way to do it? Thanks, Scott

About mid-August after running Microsoft Update successfully, I re-booted after all the updates were installed. When XP booted up, a window appeared with a "Windows File Protection" titlebar, and gave a message, "Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected Windows files are intact and in their original versions." Following this a second window appears asking for the "Windows XP Professional SP2 CD", with "Retry", "More Information" and "Cancel" buttons. If you select "Cancel", a third window appears with the message, "If you cancel, Windows might require you to insert a CD later. Are you sure you want to skip this file" and shows "Yes" & "…

Windows XP Home SP2 : In the above folder there are over 150 log files all entitled KB******.txt. Some are in blue and some in black, and many are years old. Although I haven`t opened every one, those that I have read seem to be error reports, sometimes relating to software on my machine, and sometimes apparent failures with Windows Update . The errors cannot have been major, as everything seems to be working fine and I am not getting pesky reminders from Windows Update about anything. Is it safe to delete any or all of these, please? And can I configure things so that either these reports are deleted automatically after a certain time, or are not generated …

We seem to be encountering an issue with a few of our clients where a user will log on to a Windows 2000 or Windows XP workstation and their workstation profile will be recreated. When reviewing the C:\Documents and Settings folder the user profiles will be as such: C:\Documents and Settings\USER <--- Original user profile C:\Documents and Settings\USER.DOMAIN <--- User profile after profile is lost Now, in every case, it is an Active Directory user account on Windows Server 2003. We've tried installing the registry hive cleanup service on Microsoft's recommendation to no avail. Also, we haven't been able to trace any event log entr…

I have a lap top which runs Vista Home Premium. I wish to print across my home network to a HP Deskjet 930c printer which is connected via USB cable to my desktop PC which runs XP Home. The Vista machine found the printer on the network and installed the drivers but will not print. I get a message which seems to indicate that I need to install the Vista printer driver on the XP machine which sounds a bit weird, especially as the HP web site simply says that the required drivers are already in Vista. Can anyone throw any light on this for me please. -- Keith Willcocks

I have three computers at the moment: two with Vista Business, one with XP Media Center Edition. Remote desktop connection functions perfectly between the two Vista Business machines, and it functions almost perfectly between a Vista and the XP. There are just minor issues. When connecting from Vista to XP I am unable to copy files from one computer to the other (copy & pasting files from one machine to the other does not work and when going to My Computer on the remote machine the local drives are not visible). Also, less of a concern but still an issue, is that connecting from the Vista to XP I am unable to wake up the XP if it is asleep/standb…

I downloaded something called Guided Help. Never figured out what it was or how to use it. Now I can’t move it or lose it. I am unable to delete a file named: cd4ac6a33395267e9287bcd119c4 which contains an empty file folder named cdbb331914b9871b0bc45265728e and a file “dowloadexe.exe†Trying to open it brings up a dialog box labeled Guided Help, the text of which I don’t understand : Downloadexe.exe<ScriptFileName> [ResourceFileURL] ScriptFileName: This should not include file path. Resourcefile URL [Optional} File of which is to be downloaded. I think I came across something called Guided Help, by Microsoft, tried to download it, never go…

I have change the code to print to Adobe, but how can I send the job to command prompt and then save the file to a folder on my system or network folder? I have seen this be done, but I can find the person to set this up. Thanks

I seem to remember that you were able to bring up classic windows from 98se. I think it was in the system 32 folder. Does anyone know where to find it in XP or is it ever around any more. Also, when I update my system to XP Srv pk2, the fax consol was changed. Is there any way to get the old one back. I need to fax from my computer but it's a little difficult with XP.

I believe my Vista Enterprise machine is not getting any further updates since the initial run of Windows Update. The Windows Update screen displays "Windows is up to date" but there is also a line of text as follows: Updates were installed: date & time (failed) No further updates have been installed since that date & time. I find it curious that a "failed" message appears with no error code. I have this same scenario on two Vista Enterprise machines one which is activated and one which is not activated. The last update on the activated machine was 6/22/2007. Any recommendations?

Using Windows XP SP2. I the use windows classic view with the view details options set. My system is configured so that the folders I have open are restored when I restart. I have two questions. 1. When my computer reboots, the settings for view details is lost and set to view thumbnails. How do I prevent this from happening? 2. In some folders instead of just displaying a list of files with their name, type, etc., the display groups the files together with a heading with an underline like the following. Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Document -------------------------- document1.pdf nnKB ... document2.pdf nnKB ... Application ---------------------------…

Hello, I've got a problem with the file and printer sharing network component being disabled upon machine restart. Can you tell me if the status of that component is stored somewhere in the registry? I was thinking of monitoring it with Sysinternals Regmon to find out what is disabling it. Thank you, /_urka

Good Morning, New to Server 2003 R2 64 bit edition and I am interested in implementing the Windows Server Update Services for my network. I am really unfamiliar with it but it does seem simple enough. However, I would like to know of any issues before I start. Would someone please reply with any potetntial hazards? Thanks in advance!
