While opening a tif-image IE should invoke SwiftView (ActiveX control).. It seems that IE does not recognice the mime type, and displayes the tif file as text instead of invoking the activeX control. Some tif-images work and some not. Hope anyone can help with this issue.

I have a home network workgroup with 3 systems running XP Pro Sp2 using a router and cat5 - no wireless. I've had no problems with it. I built a new system and have a strange problem. If I connect to a share on the new system from any of the old boxes - all is well. If I connect to any of the shares on the OLD boxes from another old box - all is well. If I connect to the old box share from the new box - it takes *forever* for the folder to display. Using task manager I see upwards of 85% network activity. Once the folder does display, I go through the same huge delay if I try to access a file by rightclick or open a ZIP file. It appears that (NEW)XP is scanning…

I use 4 different briefcases on my laptop, mainly as a means of backup of different subjects in my main computer. Is this alright? I have been able to update files in either version and later updated the files in the other copy in any of the briefcases. However, I now appear to be unable to update any main version file from my laptop version with message "Some of the files were read-only. They were not updated." but none of the files which failed to update were marked as "read-only" (as seen in "Properties") in either machine. These files are (naturally) in folders. Folders are naturally marked as "read-only" but they would be, wouldn't they? However, I can still …

Since doing a system recovery on my PC (Compaq Presario AMD Athlon running Windows XP) and doing all the critical downloads (74 of the little so-and-sos!) my PC has taken to displaying one or both of the following messages on boot-up. 'One of the files containing the systems Registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternative copy. The recovery was successful.' 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close - szAppName: svchost.exe szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180 szModName: netcfgx.dll szModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 offset: 0000f9c0' Any help in resolving these issues would be gratefully received.

I have discovered today that compressed folder view doesn't work with a standard account although it works fine in an admin account. Zip files have no association no context menu to extract, nothing. This happens with any standard account. Any ideas why that might be? I assume standard users should be able to open compressed folders.

Ever wish you could make one of your computer's drives invisible to anyone snooping around on your system? Well, happy days are here my friend! Whether you have sensitive docs, pictures, or any other private data, this is one of the easiest ways to keep them safe. Keep in mind that you'll still be able to access your hidden drives; you just won't see that they exist in Windows Explorer or the My Computer folder. Back up your registry before you start! 1. Open Regedit. 2. Navigate to one of these strings: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer - this only changes the settings for the current logged in user HKEY_LO…

Hi: I have just formatted and re-installed everything, and every time I install a program or a system update from MS, I find that I cannot connect to the Internet. This is so frustrating. I an in IE trying to access Yahoo Mail and get this sequence: IE cannot display webpage. Diagnose connection problems. Windows is checking connectivity. Internet connectivity has been restored. ....and then I am able to connect. Is there any way to prevent destruction of the connection setup when I install an update or a new program? This is really time consuming. Thanks in advance, and have a happy Labor Day!! Mike

I am trying to get MS Automatic Updates to operate as it should do – and to check and install updates automatically. I have adjusted the settings under: My computer / Properties / Automatic updates for it to update every day at 10.00. However it does not appear to operate and I have to check for updates manually and then install them which it does. However, I am concerned I could miss an update and it is also a laborious and time consuming process. One of the problems seems to be a miss-match between the time set up under the Control Panel setting (10.00) on my PC and that on the MS Automatic Updates Page which is set to 03:00 and which I can't am…

Hi all, this is driving me nuts. For the past few weeks, my WinXP system insists on showing all Open/Save dialogs (for non-Office apps) in reverse sort order, i.e. List mode, files first (instead of folders) and descending alphabetical order. I've already seen a number of proposed solutions in the newsgroups, including this: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_opensaveorder.htm and this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/229070 but neither helps - the default sort order remains wrong. Any other ideas? TIA, -- Kristofer

I did have a problem installing this update but I have now managed to get it to install after recreating all my moved 'c:\users' folders as described in other earlier threads. Obviously I now what to confirm that it was actually installed correctly. However, when I look at the list of file names & versions listed for the update in the KB article to confirm it was installed correctly I get confused! Taking a look at the first file on the list 'Aithui.dll': ....in my system32 folder I get v6.0.6000.16513 which doesn't seem to be the one mentioned in the KB article. However I do have the correct version listed in: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Do…
