we wish to implement a single-domain network structure for our company. We have 45 remote branches all have an average of 20 users per site and have 300 user's in HO. Since we have a server on each branch that host some applications, we intend to make this servers a DC with AD integrated DNS for the local users be authenticated locally. Some links / websites recommend to put a Global Catalog on each site to facilitate the logon query locally but i have also read about implementing a universal group membership caching w/c they said to be ideal for remote branches with limited bandwidth and harware resources. I run a 3 computer home LAN, all running Windows XP SP2. On one PC I have my email client, Eudora Pro and my news reader, Forte Agent. I access them from my laptop by using the appropriate command line switches in the shortcuts to point to the data directories. That all works fine, WHEN I don't have THIS problem. Each and every folder on the desktop computer are checked "read only". However, the background of the checkbox, which is normally white, is grey with the check inserted. Uncheck it and it goes white, after asking me if I wish to change the attributes from read only to "full" for all files and sub-folders. Usually, when a folder or a group of highli…

I have recently used the Seagate DiscWizard software (by Acronis) to image and clone my system. After running the clone for a few weeks I discovered that NTbackup causes a BSOD (BAD_POOL_HEADER, Stop code 0x19, parameter 1 is 0x20). The problem is almost identical to that described in posting "backup using shadow copy causes blue screen stop" by what bobfnospam@duxsysnospam.com. If volume shadow copy is disabled, the backup works properly. I found that the problems with NTbackup could be fixed by using System Restore after booting up the clone, to return to a checkpoint made before the cloning (or imaging) operation. Pesumably, this resets something in the reg…

Since using Vista, I am having trouble receiving email attachments in some instances. I use Outlook 2003. The problem has arisen when the sender is using XP/Thunderbird/ and XP/Eudora address to send email. A mate using Vista/Outlook 2003 also cannot get attachments from the same sender. When I say the the attachments don't come thru they are there, but still encoded. ie I see a couple of meg of ASCII characters. Hi, I am trying to collect some ideas for disaster recovery model suitable for my environment. Hopefully someone can give me hints on this. I have a blade server with SAN running windows 2000 server SP4 as 2nd-ary DNS, fileserver, and print server in active directory environment. I got shipment of a server (stand alone, not blade) from the parent company, with quite big hard drives (1Tb). Due to plan changes, the server is available for "anything". I was thinking to utilise this server as disaster recovery server. I was thinking a way to incorporate the disaster recovery that could be tailored to my current environment with minimal configuration (hoping the…

so i just upgraded my memory from 512 to 1gb. *everything is okay with 512* after upgrading, i noticed that i can not play any games, videos anything to do with video. so i reformatted everything, updated to directx 9 and updated to SP2. *each time i go to dxdiag and to run the direct 3d test* everything was fine, so i downloaded the rest of the updates and that is where my problem started again. after updating to the latest, i go back in to dxdiag and run the direct 3d test. then it makes a sound and freezes my screen. i can't do anything (no alt-tab or alt-ctrl-del). i'm not sure if the updates corrupted my file or not *have updated all my video drivers, bios*…

When I first started up my computer after I purchased it, the sidebar gadgets had a lot of different options. For example, I could select between either landscape or portrait size in the slideshow gadget. My clock was a world clock, and there were a few others that were different as well. Any suggestions as to what I may have done to lose the settings, and any suggestions as to how to get them back?

Hi I have a situation where a user consolidated his drives by fully restoring a drive (using Microsoft Backup) into a folder on another drive. Problem is he restored the Recycler and system volume information folders as well, and now he's cleaned up this folder and wants to delete it, he can't because he has these 2 folders. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'm new to this forum thing, but hope to find some much needed help. I bought a used computer for work and went on microsoft.com to make sure that the Windows XP Pro already installed on the computer was a valid version because my employer said a bootleg copy wouldn't work with their system. I used the validation tool on microsoft's website and it said it was valid. Here's the problem: I would get a message asking if I wanted to validate windows because it would need to be validated within 6 days (paraphrasing). I clicked yes and it said "windows has already been validated". "Click OK to close". I would click OK and my comp would work just fine. The next …

Thanks very much. I've been messing around with this for awhile, without much success. I've tried most of the other "fixes" suggested on this forum without success. Just read yours, followed the procedure you suggested (I renamed the files rather than delecting them) and it worked like a charm. Thanks again. Im having a problem clicking on video files on my computer. I click on the video to run it and explorer crashes. this hapends about 40% of the time and happends when i click on it, not neccisarly even run it, just click once. The video it self actually runs fine, even if explorer crashes the video playes in any player like nothing is wrong. When it "crashes" it pops up the box that says theres an error and needs to shut down and to send it to microsoft. The files are the generic video files, mpg avi etc... the less common files ones like mkv, flv dont crash it. So yea not sure what elts to say, clicking on video files makes explore crash... windows xp, 1g …

Whenever I start the laptop on the Domain at work my time is correctly syncronized with the network but whenever I start the laptop off the Domain, the laptop is exactly one hour (sometimes exactly two hours ???) ahead of the correct time. Time zone is setup correctly (EST) and the DST is enabled as it should be for New England. The only thing I notice that is strange is that when off the Domain and I go to the date and time settings and sync to time.windows.com or the second choice I get an error. If I use a third party utility (don't want to), the sync works and shows the right time.
