The freeware utility from Sysinternals (now part of MSFT) was updated yesterday. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processexplorer.mspx Full support for "64-bit versions of Windows for x64 and IA64 processors, and Windows Vista" What is process explorer? "Ever wondered which program has a particular file or directory open? Now you can find out. Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded." Download link: http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zip No installation required. "Simply run Process Explorer (procexp.exe)" Carlos

Thank you, I have been looking for a solution for about a day with no success. This error occurred on my Vista 64 bit after an auto update session, my Vista 32 bit OS did not have the issue, don't know why but I'm happy to have my gear show up again. Thanks again NelsonVe "C" wrote: > Thanks, your info helped. This was exactly the repair I was looking for. I had installed Diskeeper on a free trial basis, but couldn't afford to buy it when the trial ran out several weeks back so I uninstalled it. I decided I needed to defrag yesterday and discovered that my defrag shortcut was gone. I think Diskeeper is so aggressive that it tries to take the place of the Windows Defragger, and when I deleted it, it took the shortcut to the Windows Defragger with it. I've heard a lot of good things about Diskeeper, but I am not happy with what happened when I uninstalled it. Anyway, thanks for posting the way to reinstall the original shortcut to the Windows Defragger. -- bunnie…

Hello! I recently have upgraded to Vista. I found that when I try to open an mp3 link from a website, it no longer opens into Windows Media Player and begins to buffer, but starts downloading straight into the Temporary Internet Files folder. How do I stop this?? I've made WMP the default player, but it still won't open the files straight from the internet. PLEASE HELP!! Thanks in advance!

Hi, I wanted to setup Fax on my machine. My OS is XP pro SP2. During the Setup the XP pro SP2 disc (which was given by my retailer) was prompted for, because my machine does not have i386. The computer is not copying the files necessary from the disc's i386 folder . My original installation disc is only XP pro SP1a and has the i386 folder Should I attempt the procedure with the SP1a? If no, then what's the solution? Thank you Chateau

If somebody could please help that would be great. I have had my HP for a few months w/ Vista. We download the free game trials (in search of the one good enough to buy) from Yahoo, MSN, Playfirst, etc. However, the last few days when we try to download from the site, it goes as normal, and with no error messages. However, once it finishes downloading from said site, it just goes away, I can't find the install anywhere on the computer and it doesn't automatically come up with the install wizard, like it used to. If anybody has any ideas that would be great.

Hello, I am setting up a domain. What is the best way to transfer settings from workgroup user to the domain user? Is File and Settings transfer wizard the best way to go? All users will be on same hardware. Someone told me that there may be a way to go into the registry and change a SID and that would do it. TIA

This worked for me instantly. All my event sounds came back! The volume button now installs to the system tray, and the play button now works on the sound tab of Sounds and Audio Devices Properties. My problem was: Event sounds quit working, under "Sounds and Audio Devices", on the sound tab, the play button is grayed out and doesn't work. Also the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" doesn't put the icon in the taskbar. All diagnostics seem to check out ok and troubleshooters don't help. Music and video files play ok. Updated driver to no avail. I wonder if this could have happened upon uninstalling a troublesome xvid, and reinstalling a more recent version…

Some files when I save them, the date modified in windows explorer doesn't update. Also when I do a save, it asks me if I want to replace the existing file with the latest file, but it gets confusing because the dates are the same and won't update. Has anyone else had thses problems and if so has Microsoft Vista come up with a fix. Thanks for your help in advace. Tonyc

Hey, I have gotten my Vista boot time down to 1 minute 10 seconds which is fine, but there is a 20 second period of Black-screenedness after the No-GUI Bootscreen (MSConfig) says "Starting Windows Vista" that I am wondering about. To start from the beginning: I select No GUI boot in System Config, and restart the computer and find that I get the pretty green logo at first, and then it says "Starting Windows Vista" [fine], and after a total of 30 seconds it is all done [fine]. At that point, my screen (HP laptop NC6400 with 2Gb memory, 1.83Ghz Core2Duo, Intel 950) goes black for 20 seconds before then going to the logon screen and finishing up. My gu…
