I have many folders and files with a (2) suffix as in \Program Files\Microsoft Office(2) and \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared(2). Please help me to understand what these are. There are also the "same" folders without the suffix. I assume that the folders and files with the (2) suffix are duplicates. About two years ago, I did a system restore and that's when I first noticed them. In reviewing them a few days ago, I noted that none of them have been modified or, as far as I know, even accessed. If these are, in fact, copies of folders and files before the system restore, and given that I don't want to go back to them, can I delete them and wha…

Hi, I am trying to install Longhorn for IA64 bit on DELL 3250 IA64 bit server. Installation porocess starts but after copying the required files to start the installation, machine hangs. It never prompts with the Longhorn installation setup screen. Can someone help in this? 1. Is Longhorn for IA64 supported on DELL 3250 IA64 bit server? 2. If yes, do I need to change any setup changes in BIOS or anything to make it work. Thanks in advance. ~Krishna

Hi, We are having a serious problem with ntbackup on our Windows 2003 Standard servers. The problem originally occured when backing up the system state on the Domain controller. The backup fails after a few minutes with an error relating to the Volume Shadow failing at its first attempt. I then tried some investigation, and found that I can't backup up anything, on any of our servers (not just the DC) - even a single file from the C: drive. I get the same error relating to the volume shadow failing on its first attempt during backup. Typically I've left the exact error message on site (its not near where i work). I don't think its the problem that people hav…

Hi, When I create any string registry entry (REG_SZ) manually , does it gets created with NULL value? Because when the same registry key is created through InstallShield(installation of .msi), I find the binary value data for the key is 0 0 0 0. When created manually, its binary value data is 0 0 0 0 | 0 0 0 0. Why is this difference coming? The real problem crops up when I retrieve the value from registry and check if it contains "" i.e. nothing. When created manually, this check is working fine but when created while installation of .msi, this check is failing. It will be helpful if any one can throw a light on this anomaly.

The DVD writer in my HP Pavilion T3155.uk, will no longer write DVDs. Whenever I try it says 'Invalid Function'. The drive is an HP HP dvd640c, my operating system is Windows XP SP2. I've seen various posts about upper and lower filters in the registry, but they don't specifically mention this problem. If anyone knows what I can do about this, I would be grateful for any suggestions. Updating the driver and firmware worked temporarily. Thanks in advance, -- Steve

MSFT's vast percentage of profit in Vista in particular and any new OS in general is OEM preinstalled Vista. That's why they tromp on the OEM named partners with a heavy boot not to ship you a Vista DVD with your expensive marked up new pc purchase. While Bill Gates and others brag that they have sold 60 million Vistas mainly through forcing its sale through a preinstalled OEM machine sale, sales of Vista are lagging far behind sales of XP at this particular date. Sinofsky wanted it shipped and ship it did. SP1 doesn't fix most of the bugs in Vista and in fact it does not even come close. The main improvement of SP1 is that it delivers the Win RE Fix …
