Yesterday, it seemed like a great thing that Microsoft got swatted by the European Union on antitrust grounds. Today, questions are emerging. The Wall Street Journal has two good articles that deal with the fallout from the ruling. Unfortunately, Microsoft may not be the only one that loses in the judgment. The first article by Charles Forelle calls out the nebulous standard that may be set by the ruling. Namely, if you win (in the market), you may lose (in court): ... Link To Original Article

I have just installed an HP Laserjet 1018. When I run out of paper, the printer sends my computer a message about it, which, after reloading the paper tray, I have to click so that the print job can resume. In Vista, this involves clicking on an Interactive Services window, which blacks out my display for a couple of seconds, before taking me to the window I need to click on to run my print job. Is there any way I can disable this Interactive Services feature, or at least, get it to stop blacking out my display?

I posted this on the print_fax forum but have gotten no replies so I will try here. Have two systems doing the same thing. Dell Optiplex computers running XP Professional SP2 with all the latest patches. HP 1018 printer connected via USB and shared. Printer will work for a while and then stop printing. If you stop and restart the spooler the print jobs start again. There is nothing of interest in the Event Viewer when this happens. Any ideas are appreciated.

I recently had a disk cleanup and now on the last 3 boots I've had a stop window indicating a Smart Disk Status message that advises me to back-up my disk. Naturally I'm taking it seriously and will be backing up immediately after this post. What puzzles me though, is that the XP 'Disk Manager' in the Computer Management Console shows ' C: Status - Healthy (System) Fault Tolerance - No' Does disk manager only monitor the windows system? Also could the disk clean be a cause? Or is it just a nasty co-incidence? For the record I used ''Systweak Advanced System Optimizer''. I would have expected error messages during the windows boot or after, but not strai…

Very annoyingly, some settings keep being reset every time I restart. I class these into 2 categories: 1) Definite errors: I set my wireless connection to use specified DNS servers, which it does successfully, but on reboot, the connection's set to auto DNS again. Also IE looses all the connection-proxy settings, and reverts to a direct connection. 2)?by rubbish vista we don't want you to have control over your own computer design? - I have one startup program that I'm asked if I want to run each and every time I restart. There is a checkbox in the nag window marked ask about this program every time, which I always uncheck, but it still asks me every time.…
