Hi All I work for a number of schools and they are always trying to enhance their pupils' learning with visual/interactive stuff instead of boring old school methods. They were doing topics on World War II and the teachers wanted to cut out video clips of famous films, eg Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbour, etc, so that the compiled content would be OK for young eyes. Problem is the current crop of 'stick a DVD, select a chunk, extract it and save it as a video file' software appears to be rubbish! The only decent one that I managed to find was a prog called MovAvi that was simple to use and was OK for screenshots, but the left and right marker function…

Hello, the Microsoft security center service doesn´t start anymore. Even a manuall start in the service management console doesn´t work. Please tell me if I could get the cause out of the event-ID or event-description in the event-viewer (system) why this service doesn´t start. Please tell me further more what could be causes that the security center service doesn´t start automatically or manually. Thank you. regards, Dirk Lehmann

My aunt uses a dial-up connection(Windows XP) with Ntelos to get online and then connects to AOL 9.0VR for free by piggybacking the Ntelos DUN. I cannot get the AOL software to automatically start the Ntelos DUN like IE does, but AOL will detect and use the Ntelos DUN if it is already up and running. I'm not at my aunt's computer(she's a 4 hour drive away) and wonder if RASDIAL could be used in a batch file to connect to the Ntelos DUN, then start up AOL, which has been configured to sign on automatically with her screenname and password, and finally disconnect the Ntelos DUN with the /Disconnect command when AOL has been shut down. Any batch script ideas to a…

Hi all, We are using a font(.fon) in our application. It is a group of fonts, many font names are embedded into this font. We have selected a particular font name in our code. All the glyphs are properly displaying in our application on Windows 2K, Xp and Mac X. But in Vista we are getting blank or wrong glyphs for some ascii characters(0-30). We can see the wrong glyphs or blank glyphs for ascii character 0-30, when we open this font using "MainType" tool in Vista. But in 2K,Xp,Mac it is showing proper glyphs for all the ascii character when we opened using the same tool. When we open this Fonts in MainType we can see all the font names which ar…

Hi, When using the speech recognition software in ms word, ifI try to correct a word by giving the 'correct', command followed by the word I wish to correct, it simply just types what I say rather than actually carrying out the correct function. For some reason it seems to operate correctly when writing emails. Has anybody got any idea why this should be happening. Also since installing Vista Ultimate, every time I print a document the program seems to default to Letter sized paper and I have to manually adjust the settings to A4. Is there a way to change this default setting please.

Hi all, Does anybody have any experience with Windows Security Alerts (the red shield on the system tray) not working if the Terminal Services service isn't running? I like to have the alerts on just in case something goes wrong such as my antivirus program doesn't start properly. I was contemplating disabling the Terminal Services service because I don't believe I need it. However, when it's disabled and the computer is restarted (to stop the service), the Windows Security Alerts don't come up. I test the alerts by turning off Automatic Updates and making sure the Windows Security Alerts are configured to warn me if Automatic Updates is not on. I do have t…

Hey I have 2 computers, winXPpro (sp2 installed) machine and win2k3 machine at home. Configured in a network, they share the same internet connection, via a router I've shared a folder on the win2k3 machine, but from the winXP machine I'm having trouble connect to this folder. Both machines are using Windows Firewall. I can connect if I turn off Windows Firewall. So what exceptions to I need to implement in Windows Firewall on both machines so that folder sharing and other Active Directory services works without problems? Jeff

Noticed the computer (XP SP2, 3.2 Pentium, 1Gb Ram, 160 Gb HD) was sluggish, went to Task Manager/Processes and viewed multiple entries of iexplore.exe, Outlook.exe, etc. Closed some of them and decided to Shutdown. Upon restarting computer, I cannot click on any of the four user accounts. The mouse does not highlight any of them. Restarted in Safe Mode - again could not click on users. Tried to click on Administrator - nothing. About a minute later, it finally accepted and started up. I went to the C: drive and attempted to CHKDSK. Computer would not allow in Safe Mode, but indicated that it would run upon next boot up. Restarted and computer is current…

Vista x64, fresh install, all updates applied and running great since about a week. Today I logged and I can't start any ".exe" program. I get the following message: "Windows cannot find 'anyprog.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correcty, and then try again." I get this if I click on a file from Explorer or if I type a name in "Start Search" from Start menu. Control Panel is dead for the most part. I rebooted in safe mode and turned UAC OFF. Everything now works fine when booted normally. WHAT IS WRONG? Thanks for any help.

have a Buffalo WMR-G54 router connected to my PC that acts as my wireless network. I generally use my Windows XP laptop to connect and never have any problem seeing the network and connecting to it. In fact, I can generally see 6 nearby networks, including my own. My network is on Channel 13, 802.11g, Open authentication, WEP. Recently I have bought a Windows Vista laptop for my mother, who does not have broadband set up yet and thus her network is not ready I decided to use it with my network to set up firewalls, etc, via the internet. However, Vista is not showing my network at all and I cannot connect. In fact, it is only showing 2 of the n…
