Can someone please help me with a nagging and irritating problem of windows firewall in Vista (Home Premium) as whenever I connect to internet, the firewall not on message appears. I have to manually select the firewall to turn on each and everytime I log on the net. How can I permanently turn on the windows firewall program? Please help.

Whenever I set it from C: drive properties > tools > error checking, it says it will perform it on the next boot when it has exclusive partition access. OK so far. Then after rebooting it says it is beginning the Chkdsk, but a line immediately follows saying it is being cancelled. I tried a related solution from the Knowledge base by using the opposite of its instuctions for making an registry entry for canceling chkdsk. In other words I made sure it was set to the example it gave before cancelling. When that didn't work, I removed the value entry completely. I made sure I searched the registry to make sure I changed all duplicate entries the first time…

I generally like Windows Aero except for that distracting red X in the upper right corner of active windows. Other than purchasing WindowsBlinds or reverting to the Windows XP interface, is there a way that I can change the background color for the X alone?

I see the 'load balancing' item in with the TCP and 'file and printer sharing' options for my NICs. Does this serve the same function as nic teaming or is this something to do with clustering (or something else entirely)?

I would like to reassign the location of the folder that contains lists of favorites in "Windows Vista". In Win'XP this was a function that was performed by TweakUI. I'm running XP SP2 with all updates, and for some reason today, my messenger is locking up, and when I try to open the Services console in the Management Console, it won't open. I can also try Start > Run > and then type in "services.msc" and nothing happens. In the task manager, mmc.exe is running, and I have to kill it. However, if I run mmc.exe, the management console comes up, and I can load services.msc that way. This is very strange, and I'm wondering what might have happened - can it be that services or some other critical fiel has been corrupted? Please let me know if there's a way to debug this. I'd hate to reload windows over this.

Had problems with Nero 7 where it just stopped working when I try to make any sort of disc using the built in file manager where it just stops working. A suggestion was to upgrade to Nero 8. OK now I've even tried Nero8 and I still get the same problem!! I am wondering if this is a permissions thing now? I updated from XP and had a few problems sharing netrowk drives but sorted all that. I have just realised that the problem only happens when I try to go INTO a directory which contains any files. I can navigate through directory structures which only have folders below them but as soon as I try to go into one which contains any files, Nero stops working! Nero …

I have a general licensing question. I was looking at our licenses under the licenses tab and noticed there are 25 per server licenses purchased and 0 per device/per user allocated and 0 per server reached. This seemed a little weird to me that there would be 25 per server purchaced and 0 being used. The only person that logs on directly to the server is the builtin admin account, but everyone uses it everyday as it's a file and domain controller. Can someone explain this to me??

Hey there I have been trying to share my media over my home network for while now with no joy in the matter, i have set the IP sec to manual and started it, i think i have opend all the correct ports in the correct direction but still my device does not show up, so i need to be using a proxy server or is there a snag in the firewall somewhere along the line, if so what is it, i may have looked it any help would be rally great and many thanks -- grapes

Dell Inspirion 1501 came loaded with Vista Home Basic. A couple of weeks ago tried to save some pictures from a CD. Kodak EasyShare and QuickTime partially loaded. Trying to remove them from startup using software explorer, but the remove and disable buttons appear to be inactive. Try to uninstall using Account Control, and the Kodak Easy Share tries to reinstall itself. With QuickTime the windows installer at least gets started, but then QuickTime tries to reinstall itself as well.

I have had so many problems with Vista that I'm going back to XP. I want to transfer my files from Vista back to XP. As per Microsoft, I'm using .migwiz on XP to complete the transfer. The problem is that the only option available in XP is the collecting of files. I have already collected the files to transfer from Vista. In XP, the .migwiz program will only let me collect the data but there is no option to transfer the data I've already collected. How can I overcome this?

Windows XP SP2, IE7, office 2007. I have a Word 2003 document on my HDD. If I search on the title of this document, under the "Documents" filter, it is NOT found. If I change the filter to "Everything", it IS found, as a Word Document. Is there a setting somewhere for this, or is it just something that Windows Desktop search does?

I have a gateway mx6453 laptop running windows media center edition and my problem is that I usually keep the laptop plugged in and close the lid when I am not using it, and then windows will go into suspend mode and when I re-open the lid, the welcome screen comes on and I am forced to type in my password. This would be normal operation if I had "prompt for password when computer resumes from standby" and "when I close the lid of my portable computer go into standby" both selected but I DON'T.
