I have been trying to help a friend that has a new Sony laptop with Vista Home Premium. I had the laptop for several days setting it up and comparing it to my laptop on the settings. I also have DSL and connected the new laptop with no problems. Now my friend only has dial up (yeah that sucks) as DSL is unavaiable. The dial up was set up wtih no problems but when connecting to the internet it is like Vista is on lockdown. I have gone in and lowered the secruity setting and we are able to surf the internet but this popup keeps coming up and it is a royal pain in the backside and I cannot figure out how to turn it off or adjust it to stop, "current security se…

Is there any way to display the classic windows logon screen at startup, but still allow fast user switching. When there is more than 1 user logged on, it will use the welcome screen. Once they all log off, it will go back to the classic logon. Please let me know if this is possible.

hi,I am helping a friend configure his Dell laptop to connect to my Linksys router so we can play games online. I have unchecked ipv6 from the wireless card so its not used but I still get low connectivity. I cecked out the cable guys article on tech net (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0506.mspx) about configuring ipv6 and I set the registry entry to prefer ipv4 over ipv6 and still we cant play. It claims due to high latency but we have tried it from within the same room as the router. Here is the ipconfig/all for his system. Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : BPC Primary Dns Suffi…

Hello, I have loads of photos on my computer in a separate D drive which are backed up to external hard drives. These all have names and many have meta data. Suddenly for no apparent reason at all some of my photos disappeared and the disapperance was unfortunately backed up. I have restored the files but I now have a problem in naming and renaming the restored files. Whereas I previously could name them as I liked, I now am not allowed to give names other than very short ones and existing names have been truncated. I cannot find a way around this and have no idea why it happened. I am also finding in Photoshop that some files will not rename and I am being tol…

When I minimize a program (any), they won't go to the taskbar but will minimize to the desktop itself. If a have something maximized I can't see what is minimized because they stay on the back. I tried fooling around with taskbar properties but didn't manage to put it back.

Recently I am having trouble getting windows boot manager to auto load windows. I only have Vista loaded and it shows up in the boot menu. I have to hit enter to load Vista. Then it works fine. How do I get it to boot to vista again without hitting anything. I ve tried changing timeout options in MSCONFIG , Tried to rebuild BCD store using BCDEdit and other programs like EasyBCD. I even did the Boot recovery options using the Vista Setup DVD. Every outcome was the same. I still need to hit enter for Vista to load no mater what the timeout settings are in the BCD. Attempt to restart again?" Below that it has two options " Delete restoration data and proceed to the system boot menu" and Continue with restart" It will not allow me to select any of these. I have tried putting an xp disk in and it will not allow me to boot from there. I have also tried to get to the bios and it will not allow me in there either. I can put in the sony recovery disk but this will erase everything and start over with no recovery at all and rewrite the entire har…

Greetings: I continue to get an error message when I try to do various installations (office, Adobe Acrabat, etc.). I am being told that I do not have sufficient permissions to "config.msi" and, then, I do not have permissions to update the Registry. I see this is a common problem, but, have not been able to see a solution to the problem. Does anybody have a solution? I have done the following to troubleshoot: 1. Created an administrator account using the "security settings" which created an administrator account like seen on XP. 2. Have verified that my directory has security permissions of 1) administrators and 2) system. 3. Tried to give ful…
