I have onboard Sigmatel C-Major HD Audio and XP SP2. When I installed the HD Audio driver that came with my ATI HD 2600XT graphics card, I no longer get any audio (no sound from speakers at all...not even Windows sounds like startup and restart .wavs). I tried to run dxdiag, and there are 2 Sound tabs (one for ATI and one for Sigmatel) but the DirectSound test failed for both audio sources. I tried uninstalling the ATI HD audio driver but still no sound. I tried reinstalling the Sigmatel HD Audio driver but still no sound. I've been trying to resolve this for over 2 weeks now with no success. Is there anyone that can tell me what the problem is and how to fix it. …

As a follow up to thread "IIS install problem on XP SP2" (found at http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/browse_thread/thread/c5c8718b8f675562/22f35ceb948c9461%2322f35ceb948c9461): I was able to follow Method 2 (mentioned in the above thread) until it came to using the "xpsp2" command. (Unknown command.) Once I realized the downloadable file WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe was the same thing as xpsp2.exe, I was able to rename it and continue with the solution. It finally worked and I was able to install IIS! Hope this shortcuts someone's journey.

Hi, I've seen similar posts all over the internet but have found no solution to this problem. When I open my AC 97 Audio Sound Effect Manager from control panel, then click 'OK' to close it, I get the following error: An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\windows\system32\ALSNDMGR.cpl",Sound Effect Manager" It was working fine last night and today it did this. I've tried a system restore, RegSrv32 shell32.dll, spyware scan with spybot and virus scan w/ mcafee. No luck. I just reformatted and finished installing the basics so I could create a disk image but now I don't want to cause I've got this error. …

Roy Schestowitz hands the balls to Homer who hands them to Mark Kent who hands them back to Roy Schestowitz. Notice how many posts, started by Roy "The King OF SPAM" Schestowitz start and end like that. Ghost In The Machine appears in some of them rambling on and on about God only knows what. He's just running interference though. The real circle jerk is Roy, Homer and Mark Kent. Gotta keep those hit counts up hey Roy? Your employers can't pay you without hits now can they?

I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. To the quick here is my issue: I am getting a System.AccessViolationException when attempting to read the channel on the server side. I am using: //All C# 2005 //I believe i have to call VirtualChannelOpen() again eventhough I have a pointer //eitherway I get the same exception IntPtr intHandle = RDPManager.WTSVirtualChannelOpen(IntPtr.Zero, -1, "Impact") RDPManager.WTSVirtualChannelRead(intHandle, intTimeOut, bytes, bytes.Length, ref written) //The API Call looks like [DllImport("Wtsapi32.dll", SetLastError = true)] public static extern bool WTSVirtua…

I have had to reformat my hard disk on a COMPAQ notebook. All went well incl reinstallation of windows XP and the various updates to bring it to latest version. Sunddenly, after a few days working, when I log out ; I am getting a message at bottom left of screen "turn off broken often" rather than usual usual "switch off computer". Any one any advice ?

An associate is working on a migration and discovered something very interesting. He is mapped to a windows 2000 server share via drive letter, selected all root folders and files and selected properties resulting count of 166,835 files, 16,966 folders & 138,638,502,928 bytes. There is also a UNC path to the same share however this shows 166,753 files, 16,962 folders & 139,627,745,804 bytes. With windows explorer configured to view all regular, system & hidden files, I hope someone can explain why there is a difference of 82 files, 4 folders and 989,242,876 bytes. Thanks

It seems whenever I use the 'Restart' option to reboot, my desktop system hangs up during the reboot, always during the screen with the WindowsXP splash screen and the little blue dots that scroll from left to right. However, when I then reboot by pushing the reboot pencil switch on the front of the desktop, everything comes up fine, even when I select 'Start Windows Normally', (instead of 'Last good configuration'). Any ideas what's going on here? I thought I might have a bad sector that's only accessed by some system driver during reboot, but then the Start Normally shouldn't work. If it is a bad sector, is there some utility I can run to check for that?…

Remote Wonder 2 seems to work now in mplayer2.exe (the old Windows Media Player). Thanks Microsoft! Someone may ask why I use the old mplayer2? Well, it starts instantly and is almost the ideal tool for previewing rendered audio and video video materials after authoring. It would be the ideal if I could use "left arrow" and "right arrow" to skip back and forward 10 seconds. I wonder if the source code of that player is available somewhere on the net... <-- Sounds too good to be a true ;-) I'm curious if this came as a Windows Update or if it came as a feature of some new ffdshow codec weekly build? Cheers!

I have never used it. I just installed XP on a new computer and have it set up like I am used to it like switching the look back to Classic. If I do accessories/tools/backup and chose "my documents and settings" can I assume that it saves all program information. I know it does not save the actual program, but does it save settings I have made to change the program defaults? On my computer I have only one user and a guest. What if I want to restore this backup on another XP machine? Can I just install the backup and have my username added to the users on the computer? If a hard drive crashes and I reinstall XP, can I add the backup file first thing.…
