The next topic has to do with runtime security, where you need to make sure that your runtime context is not vulnerable. One thing you should keep in mind is that when a plain Kubernetes cluster is created, it is very open, by default, in terms of flexibility it gives to the developer to deploy and do things in the cluster. For that reason, once you have identity access control properly configured, you would then want to make sure that your runtime environment is also secure. It’s important that you place a security baseline for your cluster, so your developers can only do the things that you want to allow them to do. This was traditionally a difficult task to ach…

Today, we have a service request that our customer faced the following error message: System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid reading a Resultset or doing any operation with the database. Following, I would like to share my lessons learned with this issue. First, I would like to check if this error is raising by SQL Database. Welcome back to another episode of Armchair Architects as part of the Azure Enablement show. So today we're going to talk about something a little theoretical. We're going to talk about the relationship between architecture and ambiguity. What do you do when the specs aren't entirely clear, or the plans aren't entirely clear? What people need isn't entirely clear? We're going to discuss that with our architects. It's not uncommon for people to come to architects with very vague statements or questions that aren't really precise. Or a problem needs to be solved, but it's not really clear what that problem is. What can architects do to help with ambiguity?…

One of the most difficult aspects to building enterprise-ready data integration pipelines is capturing just the latest changed data from disparate sources quickly. Change Data Capture (CDC) is a set of technologies and techniques that enables data engineers to discover changed records as they occur at the source. Azure Data Factory (ADF) has recently added many new CDC-enabled connectors to process change data from SQL, Storage, Cosmos DB, and many other sources. Much of the feedback that we received from our users about this has been centered around making it easy to configure and to continuously detect changes at the source. We heard your feedback and are …

The idea on this blog post came from an issue opened by an user on the Windows Containers GitHub Repo. I thought the problem faced by the user should be common enough that others might be interested in a solution. Get-Credential cmdlet pop-up If you use PowerShell, you most likely came across the Get-Credential cmdlet at some point. It’s extremely useful for situations on which you want to set a username and password to be used in a script, variable, etc.. However, the way Get-Credential works is by providing a pop-up window for you to enter the credentials: On a traditional Windows environment, this is totally fine as the pop-up window shows up, you ente…

Microsoft Sentinel offers many ways to automate tasks. Watchlists are a key component to correlate data sources in detection rules, queries, hunting, and playbooks. It can be a tedious task to keep watchlists updated if their contents are based on dynamic and changing data. Fortunately, the process of editing existing watchlists or creating new ones based on the results of alerts generated in Sentinel can be fully automated using Logic Apps. There are many watchlist actions configurable in Logic Apps – here is a post by Benjamin Kovacevic covering them. This article will show an example of adding items to a watchlist based on the results of an alert. The steps for …

In this article, we show how compressing mapped (aligned) genomic sequencing data (BAM files) using the CRAM standard can reduce storage size (and cost) by around 63% at a compression cost of under a penny (< $0.01 USD) per sample. We demonstrate our results on a set of 62 whole genome sequencing (WGS) samples from the 1000 Genomes Project. We also give detailed instructions on how to use this method on your own data. Introduction Organizations that work with genomic data often need to store large amounts of sequencing information for large numbers of samples for long periods of time. This can result in substantial storage costs, especially when the data n…
