missing security tab on network shares and local folders
by Guest JBeckett [MCSA]- 0 replies

I'm missing the security tab when I open the properties of local folders and on network shares. However, the problem seems to be limited to my computer and my user account. I have taken the advice to take off 'Simple File Sharing' under the 'Tools'->'View' tab of Windows explorer. I have also verified that I have an ntfs formatted disk. I was looking through Group Policy to see if that was the culprit but I couldn't find a setting that would prevent me from viewing the security tab. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Files are not deleted handle held by system process
by Guest Jocky Mac- 0 replies

We have deplaoyed our application on may servers but on only one we are seeing a strange problem. The application is written in C and uses the remove function to delete a file. The file appears to be "almost" deleted - we cannot open it, copy it or view security attributes etc but a di in the folder shows it is still there. We used process explorer to look at it and it reports that the file has on open handle from the system process. If I right click in process explorer and select "close handle" the file disappears. Any idea why the file is not removed?

Every time I sync my PDA with Mobile Device Center, it changes my Device ID to something like "WINDOWSMOBILEXX" where XX is any number from 1-99. This subsequently breaks all my registered apps that look at my Device ID to know if they are registered properly. I have tried editing the registry on Vista and the PDA, but to no avail. The Mobile Device Center changes the Device ID at random each time it connects. Any thoughts?

Most recent update wounded search
by Guest Wowbagger- 0 replies

Searching a shared folder on the server became much slower over the weekend after the installation of the more recent MS patches (Server 2003). A search (right-click the folder, select search) that used to take 5-6 seconds now takes 2 and a half minutes. The update is the only change that was made to any machine on the network. Any ideas which patch might have broken the search and how it can be rolled back?

I want to put (resp. wrap) a directory into a CD image. The compressability of the directory files is high and I want to compress all the stuff as much as possible. Which format should I choose: IMG or ISO ? Are there tools which allow a higher compression (without creating a *.zip or *.rar or *.7z archive) ? Frank

Network timeout problem
by Guest Ray Dawson- 0 replies

Hi, My nice stable Windows XP setup has thrown a wobbly for the last couple of weeks and I haven't been able to find out why. I am connected to the internet via an adsl router - as are two other computers running XP. This computer has started to disconnect from the network connection every few hours for no apparent reason. The other computers don't do this - which means no router or internet problem. All three computers are running IE7. With this computer, if I haven't connected recently, when I try and open a web page, IE tells me that I am not on line and I have to click the Connect button for it to do so. My email client does likewise. I haven't know…

After using HP desktop w/out problem for 2 years, started having problem with monitor blacking out when computer went to sleep mode. Would not come back on when rebooted or restarted. Had to click monitor on and off to see screen, click on help utilities to restore to prior settings. Then monitor comes on. Heard it could be software problem but can't find it. Virus scan comes up negative. Hardware scan comes up negative. Can you help me figure out how to identify the problem? Thanks!

Vista Firewall slows up printing
by Guest youngjan- 0 replies

Hi, I've got a Canon LBP5200 laser printer. Since getting a new PC with Vista Home loaded I've had problems with the printer. Got the correct driver from Canon installed and the printer works but takes forever to spool & start printing. Checked with Canon support and all the printer configuration settings are as they recommend - they couldn't recreate the problem but suggested a firewall might be the cause. If I switch off Windows Firewall it works like lightning. I've tried adding the Cannon LBP5200 RPC server process to the exceptions list and this helps with some applications, but unfortunately there's still a problem printing from Office (Word…
