I occasionally get a computer hang (almost always when using media player). I know this is a Trendmicro file but I only ran Housecall once several months ago and no longer use it. For some unknown reason, the service control manager generates an entry in the event log #7000. "tmcomm.sys failed to start". Does anybody know what is triggering this and why. Is this file used by anything else? I've been reluctant to delete it since I"ve finally got Vista running pretty well and don't want to mess up something else.

Discovered my computer had a trojan virus the other day that kept chaning names and couldnt be quartined so I had to reformat my entire computer. Well after doing that every time I restart it goes to a chkdsk for local disk (G:) saying One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. After scanning very briefly it says Unable to read the security descriptors data stream. I went to My Computer > Local Disk (G:) and it has no details. Does it need formatting or partitioning I have no idea. -- gibblerfan83 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gibblerfan83's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/member.php?userid=3…

When you copy or move a file in Windows Vista, the dialog box defaults to displaying "less information" and has the option to display "More Information". Is there a way to change this to ALWAYS show "More Information"?

I posted before about this and I don't seem to be able to find any solutions. Dial a fix didn't work for me and I had to restore my laptop... The status bar doesn't move when I choose to run either the express or custom searching for available updates. Background inelligent updater is started, windows updater is started. I don't know what else to do... Any ideas other than reformating my computer?

I was deleting some unused icons from my desktop this morning, when things suddenly started acting a little strange. After a little investigation, two things are wrong. 1. Many (~40%) of the icons in my start menu have become This symbol: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m143/WarKirby/symbol.png And refuse to do anything when selected. Right clicking and selecting properties tells me "This is not a valid shortcut". The actual program they point to is unaffected, but this is an annoying inconvenience. 2. Farther to that, and far more worrying, notepad has suddenly ceased to work. Trying to open any .txt file causes a black console window to appear for half …

My machine seems to have some application that is using Direct 3D. Whenever I start up a Direct 3D application (game) it gives me an error message about it. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and the Direct X itself. I've also tried browsing the processes and trying to kill off anything stray, but no luck. Is there some simple way of fixing this? At the moment, I think I might be down to reinstalling the operating system. Peter

My Windows XP downloads updates automatically for installation. After doing so yesterday, I'm noticing that I'm having problems in Outlook (XP). Now, when I look up a Contact in my address book, I get "Outlook could not find the requested contact. You don't have appropriate permission to perform this operation." Also, it seems like I'm having a problem opening email attachments. Any ideas? Thanks.

I purchased Coffee Cup HTML Editor (coffeecup.com) 2 days ago. The incentive to this purchase was the Visual Editor. I cant use it because of this Security Update. I have spent hours trying to figure this out. Coffee Cup has not responded to my call or e-mail and they are closed on weekends. The only solutions I can find is for XP. The steps are not the same as Vista and cannot be applied the same. I have done all the obvious for recommended solutions by checking installed updates. It is not there! I go to microsoft, keyword search KB891781 and they all seem to apply to earlier versions (XP, NT, 2000). When I keyword search Vista KB891781, the messa…

I'm running Windows XP home edition SP2. I rarely use Windows Media Player as I have other players for playing MP3 files. The other day, I opened the Windows player to play a certain file. I clicked on the library tab and to my surprise, it was loaded with thousands of files! Files that I had never opened with Windows Media Player. My question is, why are they showing up in the library, and, how do I get rid of all of them? I don't have a "My Music" folder......don't need it, deleted it. I checked the properties of some of the files. They pointed to a folder that doesn't exist.
