My Windows XP downloads updates automatically for installation. I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not, but I'm noticing after a recent update, that I'm having problems in Outlook (XP). Now, when I look up a Contact in my address book, I get "Outlook could not find the requested contact. You don't have appropriate permission to perform this operation." Also, it seems like I'm having a problem opening email attachments. Any ideas? Thanks.

Back on Sept. 28 7:21 AM I posted a problem with wallpaper. Kelly's fix on line 142 right side didn't work. I didn't know at the time how infected the computer was (Vundo and others). I finally got the system clean and Kelly's fix still didn't work. A friend pointed me to the following link and the fix here worked. http://www.helpmerick.com/node/987 This is just for your info.

I just added three systems to a peer-to-peer and just have a few important quirks. I'm not a novice but don't know the answer here. All XP. Connected to a DSL modem/router. Router settings are default. New 3 systems are default (get IP from DHCP etc). All on the same workgroup. The three old systems can see each other but not see the new ones. The new ones can see each other but not the old ones. There are a couple network printers, the new ones can see but not the old ones. When I say "see" I mean they don't show up in network neighborhood. I can manually type in the name of a printer shared by an old system and the new one can connect to it. All can print to …

This got me thinking about this problem and I turned off my blocking of bad sites(for the kids protection) which included nasty names and swear words in my netgear router and hey presto, updates are all updating as i type. The computer was only purchased last week , running XP but it happened to my other computer running Vista, so thanks for jogging my memory about firmware updates.. It reset all your configurations and unblocked blocked sites.. Explorer has cause an error in Shell32.dll. Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restating your computer. This error popped up first time while adding an MP3 file to Winamp 5.1. I clicked close. The mp3 file however got added and played normally. I noticed that Modem and Soundcard icons have dissppeared from the Quick Launch bar leaving Volume icon only. But both of them remained active. Restarting the computer made no change. I soon found out other players ( Total Recorder, Cooledit) are acting similarly. Scanreg... reports no error in registry. Reinstalled the windows and the players and still the same position. Please…

Recently my vista ultimate installation started to freeze in boot up. I ran repais the installation and the problem, seemed fixed but now there are problems in applications requiring later versions of IE. For example if I try to run device manager I get "mmc will not run on a version of internet explorer earlier than internet explorer 5.5" and if I try to run outlook 2003 I get a similar message about requiring a version greater than 4.01 This is despite the fact that IE (version 7 of course) runs fine on its own Any ideas? -- John Donker - Hong Kong

I have been using the United States-International keyboard happily for a couple of years. But now it won't work. Now, if I choose the international keyboard, I can't type accented characters, nor will the keyboard type apostrophes or quotation marks. I have had to revert to the English (United States) keyboard. Wireless Lan cards lock up my older Vaio notebook when inserted, control returns when removed. Details: TI PCI-1420 CardBus Controller ver 5.1.2600 (2001) XP home SP2 ACPI - IRQ sharing - PCI devices all share IRQ9 I sure acts like a resource sharing issue, computer is fine if I diasble the drivers and then insert a card. I've never use these slots, so it may be a hardware issue. I've updated to the newest bios I can find and have a clean XP install. I can't find a newer 1420 driver and it seems this is a very common driver at that. Have no idea how to diagnose this any further. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm embarasssed to have to ask this question, but I can't figure it out. I bought a 24" monitor and was trying to figure a way to increase the size of all pages to automatically take advantage of the larger screen. Following directions in Help and Support, I right clicked the task bar in the Command Prompt and directed it to enlarge the page. Unfortunately, it did this only for the Command Prompt page. I've been trying to reverse the enlargement, but the task bar is no longer visible. How do I do this?

I once reinstalled XP just because the options in Folder Options>File Types were ALL greyed out, it was so annoying. However here's one possible solution (it seemed to work for me, but I cannot be sure), for anyone else with the same issue. Just copy and paste the following text into Notepad, save as *.reg (NOT as *.txt, so that it is saved as a regfile not a text document) and then rightclick it and select "Merge" to add it to the Registry. Then reboot: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explo rer] "NoFileAssociate"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur…
