I'm trying to set up an automated backup that uses (up to) a 5 tape rotation and fires daily. The idea is to do a weekly normal backup one day, and then differentials the next 4 days. Each week a different tape will be inserted. I'd like to configure the media so that no matter which tape is in the drive, the backup will find it and run (it's more important for us to ensure a daily backup than overwriting last week's data). Currently, all the tapes are named "Weekly", and each tape has a different description - Weekly 01, Weekly 02... I've added media using Removeable Storage Management and have had successful backups up until I introduced the Weekly; Weekly …

I have a Linux-based NAS running Samba with user-level password protection (the same userid and password as Vista). I can browse files, etc., but I am unable to run any executable files. UAC prompts me for approval, but then give me a "Login failure: unknown username or bad password" error. It must be a UAC issue because I have no problems when I turn UAC off, but I'd like to leave it enabled if possible. Anyone else experience this issue and have a solution? What exactly is Vista sending as the username and password when elevating an application via UAC? Maybe I could set up a dummy user on my NAS that reflects the user and password Vista is sendi…

It started all with an existing *.iso image archive file. I extracted the content onto my hard disc. While the original *.iso image file archive has a size of lets say 2000000 bytes the extracted directory tree has a size of total approx. 3000000 bytes (=50% more). Now I tried to re-pack the extracted directory tree back into a new *.iso image. Yes I could do it with some tools. But the resulting *.iso file had always a size of 3000000 bytes just as the original directory tree. Unfortunately I did not found a way of creating an *.iso image which is compressed. How do I create a (maximum) compressed *.iso image file ? The test operations described abov…

It has happened to my 590sli and another Asus AM2 board. The problem is, I don't know if it is an issue with XP, AM2, nVidia or me. I just installed XP on another new build and I don't know what I am doing wrong, but now it won't restart or power off. It will shut down, screen goes black, but the pc lites, fans, etc. continue to run and I have to hit the power switch manually. Because of this, xp wont restart either after any updates or programs are installed, as I have to manually restart the pc. I wasn't sure when the problem would occur, so this time I reinstalled xp/sp1, rebooted properly, then the chipset drivers, and now it wont reboot by itself. I've…

I have a new computer and it has never been able to restart. Whenever an update requires a restart, or if I choose restart from the start menu, it just exits and goes to a dark screen and stops. It doesn't shut down. I have to manually push the restart button every time. System will shut down fine - just won't restart.

Hello, I have an Microsoft optical mouse which i can use all the buttons with XP's own "Microsoft Whell Mouse Optical" driver without problem but if i put my system into "stand-by" mode, mouse power (Red light) is turned OFF and only left-right and middle button(Wheel-down) awakes computer from standby. I cannot awake computer with my MS optical mouse's MOVE or wheel scroll (up/down) buttons. Only standard left-right buttons are effective for awaking from stand-by. Is it normal for an optical mouse not to awake with MOVING and wheel (scroll) buttons? Thanks.

Hello all I just completed a full install of Vista Ultimate x64 on a zero'ed out WD Raid drive and I haven't installed any software or changed any of the services that are started. I am trying to shut off the Tool & Info Tips pop-ups and I have unchecked that feature in My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View page with apply & OK but they still show up. Also I have checked the setting in the registry that controls this and it is set to zero. Any ideas as to what could be causing this not to stick. Also to note, I can't seem to get the don't show the menu option to work either. Thanks for any help. -- WBFAir

Hi, Got a weird requirement I'm trying to implement. I have to give a couple of our developers access to the services.msc from their desktops so that they can stop a service to deploy new versions. I already have the GPO in place to restrict them from touching any service but the one they need. Now how do i allow them to connect remotely to services without giving them admin on the box?

Can anybody please recommend a (free) disk editor utility that will allow me to see what file is occupying a particular sector (on an NTFS drive). All the utilities I've tried offer only the reverse option, i.e. will locate the sector if you know the file name but I want to know what is in sector 197,311 !! I don't need to actually edit the disk, just find out what the file name is. TIA

Hi We have a peer to peer network between an xp professional desktop (acting as a pseudo-server) with all the user files (documents etc.) stored on it, and a vista laptop which accesses those files via sharing. My question is, is there a way to have the vista laptop access those files even when offline? Does the offline files feature work in a non-server situation as well? Many Thanks Regards
