A useful time saving restore method for anyone's Windows. May have been on the 13th that I did an Ntbackup of Mce2005 OS on C: drive, all folders & system state then copied the 9 GB Backup.bkf to external disk where music pictures etc. are also kept; see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308422 After messing up attempt to remove rootkit which left OS dead, on 16th I restored Mce2004 from the D: Hp_Recovery partition which put PC into 2003 purchase date condition, and did minimal Microsoft updates to and including SP2. I get this error occasionally when trying to play recorded TV files (dvr-ms) in VMC, and the suggested restarting/rebooting doesn't help. My only recourse is to restore a disc image made when things were working correctly. I mainly use TheaterTek or ZoomPlayer for multimedia files and sometimes need to use GraphEdit to analyze/create playback graphs. Is it possible that this experimentation with filters/renderers, etc. (which sometimes causes GraphEdit to crash) corrupts the default graph that Vista uses? Is there any way to troubleshoot this? VMC error messages are so vague, it's hard to tell exactly what is going on (Event Viewer, as far as I can tell, …

If a folder in the fileserver \\serername\aaa is made available offline. If the server is offline, I assume the user can continue to write to his/her offline cache copy. What if the server is running and availabe? By by opening a file (an Excel file, for example) and if the user makes changes to the file, will the system update the Client copy or the copy in the network drive first ? Although I know eventually the two copies would be the same after synchroniztation, but can we control whether to update the client copy or the server copy when the server is online?

I am developing a Java application on a Vista Home Premium system. Suddenly, whenever I click on a browse button which creates a File Open Dialog (JFileChooser), I get an exception "Could not get shell folder ID list". This has always worked before and I have changed nothing that could cause this problem. The program runs correctly using the same jar file on my laptop, also running Vista Home Premium. I am convinced this is a Vista-related problem. Another weird thing is that when I start Windows Explorer, it starts up in C:\Windows\System32 which it never did before. I am trying to enable the monitor to turn off. It's a new computer and when I first had it it would do it fine. I did have some trouble with automatic updates, it got stuck trying to download one of them and kept asking to download again and again. Got it sorted with a Microsoft tech guy who suggested download and running winupsecureWinXP.bat. This may have nothing at all to do with anything but I thought it might be worth mentioning. My monitors are two Philips LCD. The monitors will go off and stay off for about one or two seconds then come back on again. Hi, I have written window's service. I neeeded to run external application from this, but I read that in noninteractive apps this will not be possible. Somebody gave me an advise to create another process running applications comuniating with my service (daemon). I created com+ server, registered and tried to run remote procedure on it. ShellExecute (placed in com+ server) always returns code: 2. File not found. Anyway I think that it is the matter of configuration or sth ... I just want to be able to run application from COM+ when nobody is logged in... I can not find any information any hint in the internet, so you are my last chance .. really…

hi, All: I'm using Windows Server 2003 R2, patched with the latest SP2. But I'm meeting problems with the option of numproc=N in boot.ini, after specifying the option, Windows cannot provide the large page support in running applications. If I don't specify the option, I can use large page successfully. (I have enabled my account in the local security policy by assigning the my accout in "lock pages in memory".) Is it expected or problems of current Windows Server 2003 R2? It exists in SP1. Would some one shine some lights on this issue? Thanks. -- Chen

Hi, When I work in a console window (Run: cmd), the keyboard input is sluggish, far slower then what I have in normal graphical windows. This is especially noticed when you press and hold the key e.g. the arrow key. In console it is about 3-4 symbols in a second, whereas in other windows it's no less then 20 (the shortest delay, the fastest repeat). The problem also spreads out to other console programs, like FAR Manager. It becomes hardly usable at all, you cannot move the highlight of files comfortable enough. Can anyone suggest possible solution? Thanks,

Was installing Windows XP Home to new hard drive got to accept "F8" nothing. Was using wireless Microsoft keyboard. Shut off computer got a wired keyboard. Now computer goes to blank screen with blanking curor. Please help

After the last round of upgrades my Vista basic will not get past the start screen before it reboots. I inserted the Vista disk and tried to repair the installation but it could not. It told me to remove any hardware that had been recently installed. nothing had been changed on the system. I then tried to reinstall the OS but it required me to execute from within windows probably because it was an upgrade version. How do I fix this catch 22 ?

When I first logged onto the server from my XP client, a "Connect To:" box popped up asking for my username & password. I entered the details but also accidentally ticked the "Automatically reconnect" box. Now I want to change my connection details. How do I get that "Connect To" box back? Thanks!

I RAN INTO A PROBLEM WITH MY PC THIS WEEKEND. I HAD TO REINSTALL WINDOWS. NOW WHEN I TRY TO INSTALL A PROGRAM I DOWNLOADED I GET A "NSIS ERROR" TELLING ME THE installer IS CORRUPT. I HAVE TRIED TO RE INSTALL WINDOWS XP AND VISTA BOTH LEGAL COPIES, REPLACED THE HARD DRIVE WITH BOTH A SATA AND IDE, DISABLED THE FIREWALL ETC.... ITS QUITE STRANGE CAUSE SOME PROGRAMS WILL WORK AND OTHERS WON'T, BUT ALL THE INSTALLERS WORK ON OTHER COMPUTERS. I WAS HOPING YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAS. Hi, I have one printer shared from Windows 2003 server. I would like to restrict certain users from being able to go in change the printing preferences to print in color. I have the everyone group in the security tab of the printer and it has only print checked off not manage documents or manage printers. When logging in as a user i can modify the printing preferences to whatever I want. I thought this would be greyed for users unless they had rights above just print. What am I doing wrong?
