Contact the laptop manufacturer for support. Your problems go beyond Windows Vista and may be a bad install or hardware related. "I would rather roll back to windows XP" Not an option since Windows Vista is preinstalled. Since it is not an option, "wacky permissions" has nothing to do with it. If the computer is new, you can return it for a refund and purchase a laptop with Windows XP if that is what you want. Toshiba, Dell and probably other major OEMs continue to sell computers with Windows XP. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "frustrated vista user" <frustrated vista user@discussions.microsof…

Is there any way to have Vista NOT sort files in Windows Explorer as soon as they are added/edited? In XP, filenames only re-sort once you navigate away from that folder and then back to it. I want it to work that way in Vista. Any ideas?

Help! I unplugged my computer to format another hard drive for another computer and when I plugged back in my other hard drive, my computer hasn't started up correctly since and will only startup in safe mode and nothing really works. I have tried to fix the settings but think I have done something wrong. I have 2 hard drives in the computer and it seems like it has found 2 versions. I have selected only one and it still doesn't start right. I am not sure if I put in the correct load identifier. Can anyone give me some guidance on this problem?

I run XP Home SP2 on a Pentium 3,2 GHz with hyperthreading. When I start the following program .\test.bat in a DOS-like window ("Eingabeaufforderung" in German) @echo off set c=1 :loop cmd /c echo > nul echo %c% set /a c=%c%+1 if %c%==123456 goto end goto loop :end all works fine, but after a while (sometimes c~30000, sometimes 15000, depending on what other processes are running) I get an error message for each echoed number (probably from the line beginning with command): "Das angegebene Programm kann nicht ausgeführt werden" what means s.th. like "the program cannot be executed" If I finish and restart test.bat, it sometimes works for t…

We have added a list of trusted sites in Group Policy set at the domain level. This works fine for users logging into their computer. However when they connect to our Citrix server (Metaframe XP) they don't get the trusted sites (published app is IE based) being applied. I tried adding the same list of trusted sites in the Citrix server's local policy but that didn't work either. A few posts have mentioned having to enable loopback processing - but I don't care, all users are going to get the same trusted sites anyways - because they're already specified at the domain level! Also, the citrix servers are in their own OU, don't have any Group Policies app…

I have Outlook and Windows Live messenger on my PC. When I Open "Remote Assistance" to invite someone to help me......the Windows where you would select to use MESSENGER or Outlook.....it Shows "Window Messeneger is Not Installed" and gives me the option to Download messenger. Since I have Window messenger Installed, and use it without problems, why does Windows Remote Assistance show Messenger is NOT Installed? How can I correct this problem?

i. I am fairly experienced with Windows XP. However, I did some "tweaking" to improve my system and ended up doing something wrong. This regards XP Pro, Service Pack 2, The symptoms are: I can't log into Yahoo or MSN Messenger. Network Diagnostics tells me it can't establish a connections to http://HTTPS://* I can get to some https sites in my browser. Network Diagnostics keeps suggestion it is a firewall problem. But have removed McAfee Security for now and the Windows Firewall is not configured to keep me from https://anything, it is at default permissions. I have been fiddling with permissions on files, and would like to somehow reset fil permissions…

hi, i have 2 problems: 1 when i want to open the 'documents and settings' dir in c:\, it gets stuck for about 60 seconds, and then opens. it's probably a bad sector or something similar. one probable cause: a power shutdown in the home, during a disk operation. i tried error check in the properties-> reset and chkdsk, but it didn't help. 2 during a windows update the power went down (in the home). now auto update keeps wanting to install a patch for win live toolbar. it keeps repeating it. how to fix these things (without a total reinstall of xp)? one more question: i might want to install xp to external drive: e:\. from boot. and then optional…
