I had a hard drive that had a lot of bad sectors, so I bought a new drive (320GB to 500GB) and ran Norton Ghost on it. Now, when I boot into Windows Vista I do not see my second partition. I go into the Disk Management Console and it sees the drive. When I right click to set a drive letter it says: "The operation failed to complete because the disk management console view is not-up-to-date." I refresh my console and that does not work, I restarted the computer and still get the same message. Does anyone know how I could fix this?

Hello everyone, Recently I've realized that Windows XP Pro (SP1) secretly writes data to hard-disk sector(s) that were beyond its installation-partition boundaries at that time I used a basic Windows XP installation on a 3-GB partition, and the rest of the harddisk was unformatted, for all Windows cared. I should also mention that my WinXP partition is formatted on FAT32, but I am capable of accessing NTFS partitions, if need be, using NTFS4DOS, (which I didn't). Obviously I was only able to have discovered that with an MSDOS-run Disk Editor capable of accessing all 160 million sectors of my 80GB hard disk, and making a text-based datafile containing …

Hi, I am trying to connect my 360 to my Home Basic 32-bit PC. I have taken the steps to enable media sharing (the 360 icon shows up on the Windows Media Player media sharing screen) but when trying to complete it on the 360, it cannot find my PC. Is there any other method to connect the 360 to my PC? What i have noticed as well is that the ethernet connection from the 360 to the PC has the access setting set at Local. Would this be a problem? If so, how can i change it? Many thanks in advance

My CD/DVD drive stopped working and my CF slot also, I have heard they are going to release a service pack to solve issues like this, is this true? Everytime I install something it knocks the drivers out and I have to restore my puter to factory defaults to get the drivers back on. Help!

After a recent death of my old machine I have upgraded to a new machine. During the process of transferring, somehow I have ended up with a 'box' in the upper left corner with "cancel" in it. It cannot be moved or deleted and does nothing that I can see when it is 'clicked' on. Additionally there is a task in the taskbar, that has the word "ZIP" (in red) and under it a blue paperclip (on it's side). If you mouseover the taskbar item an "icon" comes up with the word "Cancel" in it. Clicking on the taskbar item seems to have no effect, except for closing the icon. I have no idea where this came from, as it was not being displayed on the old platform. I've…

Hello everyone, When trying to run Windowsupdate (OS: Win2000 SP4 IE 6), the page displays the message: "Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software". It stops there, there is not even a progress bar. CPU usage 0%. When trying Microsoft update I get the same, but this time there's an error code: 0x8007007E. Here are the things I already tried: I ran IE repair tool using this method (as it's not in the add/remove list): http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2003/20030522_repair_internet_explorer.htm Registered my system files: regsvr32 /i Urlmon.dll regsrv32 urlmon.dll regsvr32 /i Shdocvw.dll regsvr32 Msjava.dll r…

I am new to Vista and am crippled by all of the security requirement. All of my startup programs are not working, and I am particularly concerned with AVG being blocked. When I bring up Windows Defender it is telling me that AVG is not yet classified. How do I get it classified so that it runs when I start the computer. Thank you for your help. Cheers - george

For no reason that I can work out, XP suddenly stopped booting. When I got in via Recovery Console I found that boot.ini, hal.dll and a few other key files were missing, along with all of My Documents. I've now reinstalled XP, but CHKDSK automatically runs about 1 boot in 5 during startup, and always finds a number of errors. I've run SeaTools to test my disk, and it finds no errors. Is there any other way of seeing if my hard-drive is dying? Any way of working out what chkdsk is finding problems with? Thanks in advance.

How can I read the current value (=directory) of the WinXPs "My documents" system folder ? If I type at the command prompt: set I get all environment variables listed but NOT the vaue of "My documents". How can I list this value from the command line otherwise ? How can I set this value (temporarily for only the current session!) to another value (say D:\mydata") from the command line ? Camille
