Dell 1.0 was a religious company. I suppose you could refer to it instead as merely an intense focus on low costs in all matters of its operations, but it really went deeper than that. Low cost was an article of faith that was the deep guiding principle underlying essentially everything that the company did. Dell didn't merely tilt toward a streamlined supply chain and lean R&D, they were a fundamental part of what it was as a company. This is not a pedantic distinction. Focus can be adjusted and tweaked; it's that much harder to change your core. Yet that's what Dell had to do. It had to respond to a world where "cheap boxes" was no longer the guiding mantra for se…

Is it possible in Windows2003 server folders to setup a folder and subfolders such that if any user who has r/w permissions in that folder tree creates a file, that the file is forced to have an owner that is say the admin account, and inherits read write permissions as per the top level folder ? I have a problem where I have a file repository in a folder tree, that is owned by an admin account, and has read write permissions for a group of users. When a remote user coming in via ssh adds a file to the folder, or modifies an existing file it takes ownership of the file it modifies and creates the new files as owner, and sets no read/write permissions for anyone …

My HP USB wireless mouse stopped working in Windows XP Home yesterday. I had not installed anything new, so suspected that its batteries were flat. After I changed them it still didn't work, but the wireless receiver has a a activity LED which showed that it is receiving signals from the mouse. I downloaded the latest driver and installed it, butDevice Manager still shows the old Microsoft driver. I've spent hours removing every relevant piece of software; tried two different mice a wired PS2 mouse and a Logitec wireless mouse; without success. The wireless mouse works fine on my other PC and on this one under Linux, so it's not faulty. Why won't Windows let me…

After choosing to reformat my hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Vista, I've run into some strange problems with Vista security that I wasn't having before. First of all, When I installed Hotsync Manager (to sync with a Palm TX handheld), I find that every time I boot up I get a Windows message that some programs were blocked (in quick launch). I can go in and instruct the program to let it run each time, but it gets to be a nuisance to have to keep doing that. This never happened in the original install, before reformatting the disk, and it doesn't happen with my laptop which is also on Vista. I wouldn't mind having to verify security once, but t…

Hi, I have 5 terminal servers running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 SP2. They are running NLB and together form a NLB cluster. We also have a terminal services session directory running on another server in the organisation and all servers are a member of this session directory. Each terminal server has 2 network interfaces, one for the clients to connect to (and the one that NLB is enabled on), and the other one is a management interface. The issue that we are having is with the configuration of one particular terminal server. In it's session directory configuration screen, there is no option to select the correct interface for redire…

I recently wiped my hd and reinstalled XP Home and its bazillion updates, along with Office 2000/XP, Money, etc. I opened up Add or Remove and the list displayed doesn't seem to contain all of the programs I have installed (e.g. MS Money), but the biggest oddity is that the majority of the listed "installed programs" appear to be parts of installations. For example: Symantec Technical Support Web Controls, Readme, Microsoft Money Shared Libraries, 10 entries for Catalyst Control Center (various aspects of it) Also, most have the generic setup icon and few, other tha the actual programs say anymore than their usage, including no remove button. I like to lo…
