Invalid Shortcuts, and Notepad not working
by Guest WarKirby- 0 replies

I was deleting some unused icons from my desktop this morning, when things suddenly started acting a little strange. After a little investigation, two things are wrong. 1. Many (~40%) of the icons in my start menu have become This symbol: http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m143/WarKirby/symbol.png And refuse to do anything when selected. Right clicking and selecting properties tells me "This is not a valid shortcut". The actual program they point to is unaffected, but this is an annoying inconvenience. 2. Farther to that, and far more worrying, notepad has suddenly ceased to work. Trying to open any .txt file causes a black console window to appear for half …

Direct 3D constantly occupied
by Guest psaffrey@googlemail.com- 0 replies

My machine seems to have some application that is using Direct 3D. Whenever I start up a Direct 3D application (game) it gives me an error message about it. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and the Direct X itself. I've also tried browsing the processes and trying to kill off anything stray, but no luck. Is there some simple way of fixing this? At the moment, I think I might be down to reinstalling the operating system. Peter

by Guest Glenn- 0 replies

My Windows XP downloads updates automatically for installation. After doing so yesterday, I'm noticing that I'm having problems in Outlook (XP). Now, when I look up a Contact in my address book, I get "Outlook could not find the requested contact. You don't have appropriate permission to perform this operation." Also, it seems like I'm having a problem opening email attachments. Any ideas? Thanks.

NO SUCH INTERFACE SUPPORTED-NEED TO REMOVE HOTFIX KB891781
by Guest RAWK227- 0 replies

I purchased Coffee Cup HTML Editor (coffeecup.com) 2 days ago. The incentive to this purchase was the Visual Editor. I cant use it because of this Security Update. I have spent hours trying to figure this out. Coffee Cup has not responded to my call or e-mail and they are closed on weekends. The only solutions I can find is for XP. The steps are not the same as Vista and cannot be applied the same. I have done all the obvious for recommended solutions by checking installed updates. It is not there! I go to microsoft, keyword search KB891781 and they all seem to apply to earlier versions (XP, NT, 2000). When I keyword search Vista KB891781, the messa…

Windows Media Player bloated library
by Guest Elephant- 0 replies
I'm running Windows XP home edition SP2. I rarely use Windows Media Player as I have other players for playing MP3 files. The other day, I opened the Windows player to play a certain file. I clicked on the library tab and to my surprise, it was loaded with thousands of files! Files that I had never opened with Windows Media Player. My question is, why are they showing up in the library, and, how do I get rid of all of them? I don't have a "My Music" folder......don't need it, deleted it. I checked the properties of some of the files. They pointed to a folder that doesn't exist.
