Hello, I use Windows XP Pro SP2 and Norton Internet Security 2006. The Norton Firewall *continually* pops up messages about msi.dll accessing the internet via some port or another, usually involving "UDP" (and nope, I dunno what that really means, just that it's some sort of "access protocol..) I had tried telling it to not give alerts when "unused ports" are accessed, but then it simply blocks them all, and this totally fouls up my internet access. Unfortunately, there is no option for "allow this time" - it's only "block all access" or "permit all access". Blocking usually causes Internet Explorer to stop functioning. I've been looking all over the …

Hi All, I occasionally get an "insufficient system resource" error message from a database management system my company has developed. I noticed that there was a recent fix to SQL Server for this same problem (KB274310). My app isn't based on SQL server, but if this SQL fix was something generic in the I/O handling that I might be able to replicate in my code, then I'd like to know. Can anyone out there find out what this SQL fix was, or if you've run into a similar problem, how did you fix it? Thanks for any and all information. Lewis Henderson henderso@opentext.com

hello I have a sony laptop VGN SZ440 with nVidia Geforce GO 7400 as display adapter. I have a Philips 190CW7CS/00 wide screen 19.1" monitor. My problem is that the intensity and gray shades are so bad on the external monitor I will not be able to read the label text under the icons on the desktop as its in white color. Even the color plates in MS office will skip the first 4 lines as shades are not differentiated (all look white). I have the right drivers and updates for the display adapter for VISTA Business and the monitor latest VISTA driver. but we are still facing this - very bright no shades. We changed the cable, we changed the monitor, worked wi…

I have a file server running 2003 server which holds several hundred thousand files that much be accessed from a dozen or so Windows XP/Vista machines. Can I set up a server-side search index so windows desktop search will find all of those photos but won't have to index everything themselves (the average day sees another couple thousand files added to the server)?

  18. BusinessWeek Online - When I think of the scores of products designed to take digital video stored on a personal computer and play it on a TV set, and the millions in research and development funds spent on them, I'm left scratching my head. So many of them -- from Apple (NasdaqGS:AAPL - News) TV to Microsoft's (NasdaqGS:MSFT - News) Media Extenders and scads of competing devices -- force users into the needless complexity of creating a home network, wired or wireless, between a TV and a PC that's likely stationed far away in another room. 20. A few years ago market share data clearly demonstrated Linux server growth outpacing Windows server growth. Today, Linux server growth has apparently slowed while Windows is picking up, according to IDC. Why? The rate of migration from Unix to Linux has slowed. In other words, Linux may have hit the end of Unix's low-hanging fruit (which also might mean that Sun's OpenSolaris has picked up...?). Linux growth in the U.S. x86 server market has, over the past six quarters, started to falter and reverse its positive course relative to Windows Server and the market as a whole. The annual rate at which Linux is growing in the x86 server space has fallen from …

  22. Microsoft sure is taking its time dying. What with open source cutting it off at the knees and all, I would have expected it to be packing its bags and heading home. But no, the company continues to frustrate my prophecies with great earnings. Microsoft's only weak area was online. Everything else is booming to the tune of $4.29 billion in profit. Which begs the question: who wins in the stand-off between open source and proprietary software? And when? In the short-term, the answer is clearly that open source and proprietary vendors will coexist relatively peacefully because there's still plenty of room for Oracle's consolidation play, Microsoft's ecosystem …

  25. Microsoft just bought a small stake in Facebook for $240 million (more than Facebook's 2006 revenues, which is interesting) on a $15 billion valuation.
