  1. During the Microsoft antitrust trial, one of the company's PR execs named Mark Murray would dutifully approach the press microphone on the courthouse steps in Washington, D.C., each afternoon to declare: "It was another good day for Microsoft." A few years ago market share data clearly demonstrated Linux server growth outpacing Windows server growth. Today, Linux server growth has apparently slowed while Windows is picking up, according to IDC. Why? The rate of migration from Unix to Linux has slowed. In other words, Linux may have hit the end of Unix's low-hanging fruit (which also might mean that Sun's OpenSolaris has picked up...?). Linux growth in the U.S. x86 server market has, over the past six quarters, started to falter and reverse its positive course relative to Windows Server and the market as a whole. The annual rate at which Linux is growing in the x86 server space has fallen from aro…

  7. Microsoft sure is taking its time dying. What with open-source cutting it off at the knees and all, I would have expected it to be packing its bags and heading home. But no, the company continues to frustrate my prophecies with great earnings. Microsoft's only weak area was online. Everything else is booming to the tune of $4.29 billion in profit. Which begs the question: who wins in the standoff between open source and proprietary software? And when? In the short term, the answer is clearly that open source and proprietary vendors will coexist relatively peacefully because there's still plenty of room for Oracle's consolidation play, Microsoft's ecosystem play,…

I needed to move new files into a compressed folder, so I copied the files, opened the compressed folder and pasted them there. An error message was generated that 'the compressed folder is invalid or corrupt' and all existing files in the compressed folder disappeared and were replaced by the new files I was trying to add in! I tried recovering the compressed folder using 'Restoration' version 2.5.14 & 'PC Inspector File Recovery' version 4.0, but I was only able to recover a compressed folder with a $ for the first letter of the file name (e.g. $older instead of folder) which on opening generated the error message 'Cannot open file: it appears to be an inval…

I just recently did a clean install of Windows XP on a new harddrive. In the process of bringing it up to "speed" with all of the updates, etc. I find that the computer will simply reset for no apparent reason. I have install Service Pak 2 and it did a few updates, before I encountered this problem. It will also not allow me to intall Windows Defender nor Norton AV. While in Windows Explore, Explore will just quit and ask me to send an error message, which of course, never gives me any clues at to what to do. Short of wiping out the hard drive and starting over, does anyone have any suggestions of what to try. It is a Western Digital 120G HD. I did…

Suddenly when I insert a CD or a DVD into either of my CD/DVD drives the CD or DVD is not recognized. When I open "my computer" the icon for either drive doesn't show a disc name. Then when I click on the drive icon to launch the CD the "my computer" window goes blank and freezes. I start task manager and it tells me that "my computer" is not responding. If I click end task the computer freezes. Any suggestions? Everything else seems to work fine on the computer and the only action I can associate with this trouble is that it seemed to start after a "windows update". I have tried to restore the computer to an earlier config but "restore process" gives me a message…

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place to ask this.. from what I have gathered so far from searching online two things went on with my computer. I'm not sure if they are related or not. I believe there was a windows messenger live upgrade? Right when that happened I started getting connectivity issues. Connectivity is sporadically up and down. At around the same time my MSN sypsweepr discovered an LDLINCH trojan. I went ahead and deleted it. When I was researching to make sure all traces were gone, I found out from differnet forums that spysweeper was notifed of problem and came back with the fact that the trojan was a false positive. Apparantly it …

I am looking for information on how to disable volume automounting in XP / W2003 / Vista. Disks (IDE/USB....) added to a computer should not be automatically mounted to a drive letter and made visible to the user. Mounting a volume should need an explicit administrator action in e.g. DiskMgmt.msc. I know about "diskpart.exe automount disable scrub" and "volmount /n" on W2003, but cannot find similar utilities on XP / Vista. I guess this kind of functionality resides in the Windows Volume Manager, or perhaps the PnP Manager. Please point me to APIs and utilities for controlling this. Audun GJERKEN PS. This message was previously posted to microsoft.pl…

I'm using robocopy to do some backups on our servers. It fails randomly. Note that the amount of data is close to 1TB and takes about 2 days to complete. I had heard there was a new version of robocopy for Vista so I figured I'd copy that into %SystemRoot%\System32 and try that one. It fails right out of the gates with the typical "not a valid win32 app..." error. What is so different in that newer version that won't allow WinXP and 2003 use it? 10-26-07 1508 EDT
