Microsoft has hired Rob Conery, founder and lead on the SubSonic project, reports eWeek. SubSonic is a DAL (Data Access Layer) that helps a Web site build itself. Got that? Neither did I, but it sounds cool, if too technically complex for a layman like me. This is all mildly interesting. After all, Conery has apparently been on contract with Microsoft for the past eight months and is an "MVP" (Microsoft Most Valuable Professional, which is a bit like being a community lead in the open-source world--it means you know your Microsoft stuff). What is very interesting is that Microsoft will likely be including SubSonic with its products, and that SubSonic will re…

Hey, I am into windows platform research. Can anybody tell me, how we can determine "Active desktop" settings from ShellState (HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-XX-xxxx\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer ShellState). i did a reverse engineering of this value data. It si Binary data. I found that the 5th Byte in ShellState is changing everytime i change active desktop status (enable or disable). - Am i right by saying that this 5th BYTE only decides the active desktop status? - Also, am i right by saying that the 7th Bit of this 5th BYTE is mainly responsible to change Active desktop enable and disable? - Is it applicable for all…

For the past year, I have been updating the Junk Mail filter on a small LAN (about 15 workstations) without any problems. They are all XP PRO sp2. Last month, with the September 2007 (KB936677) update, 3 of the workstations displayed 'Expected version of the product was not found on your system.' All updates were installed as Admin. All assistance is appreciated.

I am running Outlook 2003 with busines contact manager. Have been for years. The update manager said there was an update for the business contact manager for Outlook and I ran it. It hung totally on installing something like SQL server small business edition. I had to kill the install. I rebooted the computer and re-did the install (it seemed ok) and ran outlook and was requested to either start new BCM database or use an exisiting one. Both options failed to work on multiple attempts. I assume SQL server SBE or similar didn't install properly, but checking for updates said my system was up to date. I then uninstalled the BCM for outlook update which s…

I'm looking for a "smart folder" program to run on my Windows XP machine. I've tried searching on Google, but I'm not having any luck. I'm finding lots of info about Mac "Smart folder" and Vistas "Smart folder" search thing, but nothing that actually does what I'm looking for. Basically, you drag a file to the "smart" folder and, depending on the type of file and settings for that folder, Windows automatically puts it to a specific place on your computer. Each smart folder would also contain a folder named "Unknown" for file types that it didn't know how to handle. If you open the folder, the view contains a folder representing each location that files could …

I use a shortcut key combination of Ctrl-Alt-S to run a script that automatically puts my (dynamic) signature in the clipboard (which I then paste with Ctrl-V). Until Windows Vista, the console window that opened in a minimized state did so without taking away the current window's focus. With Windows Vista, I find that my current window loses focus, and I must return to it before pasting in my signature. I have also discovered that if my signature script is in the Quick Launch area (which is NOT where I want it to be), the WinKey-# combination does NOT cause the current window to lose focus — the correct behavior, but with the wrong key combination…
